Eric Dier climbed into the crowd at the Tottenham Stadium because he feared for the safety of his younger brother - and the England star accepts he could now be punished for acting in defence of his family.

Only person who should be banned is the fan abusing him

Depends on the level of abuse imo. I mean, would you ban all abuse in a football stadium? Have some kind of swearing ban? If someone misses a penalty are you supposed to say “oh well never mind” at the top of your voice. I know in an ideal word they’d be no abuse at all, at any level, but that’s not realistic so if you’re going to ban people for shouting abuse it should be quite severe for me.

It runs both ways though, if you’re shouting some personal abuse at someone and a fellow fan or even in this case the player himself gets involved then you should be able to take it as well as dish it out if you can’t then keep your mouth shut. I don’t think anything should happen to Dier at all. He was only doing what anyone else would do. But I’m going to hold off completely castigating the fan until I know what he said. If he said “You’re fucking shit Dier” I don’t think that’s anywhere near enough to ban a fan for life (simply because you’d have to ban 90% of fans to be fair) but if he went really personal similar to that scumbag West Ham fan who abused Livermore then yeah by all means ban him for life.

Totally agree mate but it must have been pretty bad to escalate like that

I don't blame Dier but FA can't allow this because sooner or later you get Ron Artest situation where wrong fan who was just sitting next to the abuser gets beaten.

I think Jose called this best.

He did what professionals can't do, but every one of us would do.

So maybe a 1 match ban from the FA, with nothing additional from the club should suffice.

Can't blame him for getting involved, but at the same time he can't go scotch free

1 match ban and a bottle of scotch. Seems fair enough.

They should be taking into account state of mind as well. It was an extremely frustrating and disappointing night. One of those ‘Alright lads, drink’s been taken, words have been said, put down the chair and we’ll all shake hands’ (or not with the current climate).

How do the FA deal with the situation? They may be investigating and no doubt a ban will be forthcoming as they can't condone players jumping into crowds and causing melees... both dangerous and bringing game into disrepute. But surely the FA should call in Dier for a private discussion, and have some level of mercy and understanding regarding Dier's fears of safety for his brother. It's a bit different to Cantona kung-fu kicking a fan.

Not sure why any grief was aimed at Dier or his family anyway. He'd played pretty well and scored his penalty...

And still no apology.
The club's PR dept could have worded something suitably grovelling to the FA, club and fans, his brother, mother and father and pet dog, that he could have read out the same evening. Something to reassure the FA how sorry he was and that he would take different action next time.

Instead he is taking the line that his actions were absolutely correct, and he'd do the same tomorrow. He's a fool and he risks being banned for the rest of the season.

Was surprised the stewards didn’t step in and stop him climbing into the stands in the first instance... one vid I saw showed a line of stewards just watching him from pitch side ..
