I’m the words of Kenny Rogers; “you’ve got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em.“

I actually think there’s a lot of potential there with Romero, but he can be a liability with his aggression. We’ve not seen any improvement on that in the two years he’s been here. Coupled with the rumours he’s unhappy maybe it is time to cut and run. As others have said, his stock is relatively high and if we want top dollar for him, the time is now.

We’d definitely need a 3rd CB signing then though.
I agree with this but the defence not having any stability hasn’t helped. I suppose it would depend on how we spent that money.

If it was just on the two players mentioned it isn’t enough - the majority seem to realise we need them on top of Romero.

If we're going off rumors, it would be an absolute whirlwind. I saw late last night that it's kind of odd that the Bremer stories popped back up after a few weeks ago. The sources are mid-tiered at best but still, bit of a coincidence:

What I still don't understand would be that it says Juve would be willing to sell due to FFP reasons, yet we know they're interested in Romero back - so not sure how that works out where Juve gets Romero and FFP relief. IMO it would be Bremer plus cash for Romero, if this hypothetical situation even were to happen, no?

Yeah it is a bit like robbing Peter to pay Paul. And I‘d probably rather have Romero and the two new guys. But sometimes you have to shift players on when its the right time to do it.

Given Romero’s contract, what we paid, his quality, and his international stature, we’d be getting our pants pulled down if we sold for anything less than 70 mil. Don’t think any team in Europe right now has both a need for a new RCB and at the same time the money required to sign him. To me it just doesn’t seem possible he’d leave. Even if he wanted out. Juve ask for him after selling Chiesa and Vlahovic, that’s the only way I’d see him going. Also if Kane had his way he’d probably be playing for City right now. Just because a player wants to leave doesn’t mean they won’t show their best if they’re forced to stay.

Then there’s the whole other issue of a Tapsoba and VDV pairing being too passive in their defending styles as a partnership. Not enough duel engagement between the pair, which isn’t ideal if Ange plays the way we all think he will.
Would you swap Romero for Bremer?

We finally have a manager whose style of play will suit Romero perfectly. He is the only decent defender we have brought in for years in an otherwise criminal neglect of our back line. We need to bring in players to support and compliment our best defender, selling him would be madness. Talk about taking one step forward and two steps back

Really want to keep Romero because I think he’ll be key when playing front foot defending. He looked bad (maybe even awful) playing deep and on the back foot, he dropped off, didn’t engage properly and got his positioning all wrong. But when he’s at his best and is pushing out he reads it so well and can win the ball high and play out unlike almost any other defender around. Think both Tapsoba and VDV look like good partners for him (in different ways) and think we’d see the best of him alongside one of them and in the new system.

Never strikes me as being completely happy and I’m sure he wasn’t particularly looking forward to coming back but hoping the atmosphere around the club will change a lot of minds.

I think it would more likely be Vlahovic if anything like that happened.

With the Kane rumours swirling and PSG apparently looking….

Hypothetically speaking, Cuti/Kane out and Tapsoba/VDV/Tosin and Vlahovic in.

I can see a lot of chopping and changing this window.

Would be a bit weird for us to bring in a progressive, attacking coach then sell Romero only to replace him with a similarly strong aggressive, front-foot defender...who is a much worse passer.

No. Bremer is a top level defender, but he doesn’t have any ball progression ability. Just not good/composed enough on the ball. Don’t think Romero is outstanding on the ball, but he is composed and good under pressure and is good breaking the lines with his passing and carrying.

Would anyone take both Tapsoba and VdV and Romero was sold?

🤔
In a heartbeat.

Class player on his day, but he's as likely to get sent off as he is to lose his man at a corner or let a winger drift in and get a shot off unchallenged. The fact that he's the best of a pretty bad bunch means we're all a bit more obsessed with him than we should be.

If he has another mixed season, under yet another manager, his value tanks; I think WC and the various calamaties around him have distracted from his own poor form and have meant that his value will have held up.

Show ambition, get VdV and Tapsoba, keep Romero and have a homegrown for cover (either keep Rodon/Tanganga or sign another).

I wonder if it was just a speculative question from Trix or if he's actually heard something that could mean Romero could be sold.

To answer the question, I don't want us to sell him. He's a quality defender who's had to put up with not so good partners. I'd want to see him with and build a partnership with some actual quality next to him.

That a tough one because I like Romero and want to keep him but with that said, if he wants out and we can get a good price, then maybe it's for the best.
Similar to PEH, for me at least.

But if we are thinking of selling both PEH and Cuti, that's giving us a hell of a lot more work to do in one window.

We'd need 3 cb's and a midfielder in, then we've still got a lot of players to shift out.

I'm all for the "painful rebuild", just didn't/don't imagine it happening in the very first window.
Although isn't that pretty much what Ange did at Celtic?

Talk about throwing the cat amongst the pigeons there trix 😁 tough one to answer but would be a lot of upheaval, too much for one summer imo. Maybe move him on next year if he wants away and buy both thos summer to bed them in while romero is still here.

What if, big if, you could get Tapsoba, VDV and Gallagher for PEH and Romero? Would that be a good deal. It’s a difficult one but I also want players to be here who are fully committed.

I guess it will largely depend on if Romero is willing to get on board the Ange train. If he doesn’t want to be part of it, it all becomes somewhat moot. If he does want to stay, it’d have to be some impressive accounting to make it worthwhile from our side.
