Getting slightly concerned with the delay now. VdV is pretty much ready to go if we want to do it. Tapsoba we are still in talks and trying to find some middle ground re the price. We fly out next Friday I believe so we now have 6 days in which to secure a new CB. It's absolutely imperative that the new CB is on the plane so I imagine we should hear very soon which one we are going for. As I said a couple of days back, I've been told not to completely rule out both depending on outgoings. But we need a new CB in ASAP!

it seems to be going the same way as previous windows. Start out very positive, then the delays start, don’t get the players we desperately need before start of season/pre season.

yes I’m probably banging the same drum as i usually do, and people will call me negative, but I’m just a realist with what I see in front of me, and would absolutely love to be proved wrong.

the fact we’re told we can’t afford both too (from most ) and the the match day ticket price hike yesterday just adds insult to injury.

many like myself can’t afford season tickets, so like to get to the odd match when I can. But the fact there is only 4? Cat c games is bang out of order.

The delay is surely trying to find common ground with Leverkusen over the transfer fee and allowing us enough time to action what appears to be the preferential player in Tapsoba.

If there's no breakthrough with Leverkusen then would fully expect us to wrap up van de Ven early next week because as you say, it's imperative we integrate what will be a first choice CB with pretty much a full pre season under his belt to absorb the system and demands of Ange.

I really hope we just pay the money needed and get them both done. Then worry about outgoings after. CB is the one position we can't dick around with this summer, and Romero aside we've neglected it badly in recent years.

Hopefully some of our fringe players will be more motivated to find a new club once they are informed that they will not make the 25-man PL squad.

If I am counting correctly, we have 19 non-HG (assuming Solomon joins) + 11 HG on our books (not counting the U21s).

This all falls back to what a Trix says imo. We are willing to act when we feel there is value see Maddison etc but that’s not our test here. We need to invest in CBs as it’s been a priority for 3 years but we seem unwilling as the deals just aren’t as good

Frankly I think people are stamping their feet like petulant toddlers. Yes it would be amazing to sign both players, but it’s not “negligent” or a “disaster” or “unacceptable” if we don’t. People are being way over the top about it.

People need to chill out and see what happens.
It happens every season. The funny thing is that a lot of people stamping their feet about wanting 100 new CBS are the same people who say back the manager without having any clue about whether Ange is actually happy to work with some of our existing CBs as well as what new CB we sign.

We’re not getting top 4 next season anyway. People need to accept that and chill out. I’m not saying this season is a right off but I’m more looking forward to seeing what Ange can do next season once he lays the groundwork this year.

I’d say it’s more important that we get the right players, than the wrong ones in time for the tour

Don't think Leverkusen are going to lower the fee a meaningful amount so probably going to just come down to whether we're willing to overspend on Tapsoba or if we consider the fee unreasonable. I wonder if the delay is cos we're trying to find a way to structure the Tapsoba payments in a way that suits us as I just can't see why Leverkusen would bend on the fee v.much in July.

It's the Raya/Vicario situation all over again, basically (don't think we'll buy both CBs).

Another poster said VDV was with Dutch under 21s so wouldn’t be going on tour anyway as would have couple of weeks off

Their last game was on the 27th of June so if he's got 3 weeks off he'd only have to cut his holiday a couple of days short to join the tour.

Either that or he misses the very start and flies directly I guess?

Doesn't seem like a key factor.

But either of them would be the right kind of player we are looking for, which is why we're looking at them. But I just hope we have a deadline and don't mess around for too long.

From everything we hear, it does appear that VdV is basically ready to go as soon as we pull the trigger - so if we are 'doing the usual under Levy' and looking for a cheap deal, why haven't we done just that and triggered it ??? Seems to me that we are 100% trying to do the more expensive deal with Leverkusen, and quite clearly he's seen as the absolute no.1 option but obviously, as with virtually any other club, there is a valuation of a player and you work within, or as close to that, as possible.

I hope we get him but like previous posters have mentioned, there seems little reason for Leverkusen to accept a lower fee at this point in the window, so VdV does seem far more likely to be the first CB signed. i'm not sure that's entirely a bad thing either, with VdV being less experienced than Tapsoba he'd probably benefit from a longer pre season with us anyway and also, with Tapsoba being more expensive and Leverkusen not budging on price, that does somewhat limit the number of clubs likely to come in for him while also giving us time to shift some of the unwanted defenders (he says, optimistically).

You simply won't "win" every deal in the window, so far we've potentially had 3 wins in Vicario, Winks and Solomon, and an absolute deal of the window in Maddison, occasionally, you just gotta stump up the cash for quality, this is one of those times.

Sky Sports Germany now saying we have interest in Ko Itakura from Borrusia Monchengladbach.

Would make sense as he was fairly heavily linked as a target for Ange at Celtic before.

Thanks, I haven’t followed the tournament so wasn’t aware when they went out of it. 👍

Agree, they’d set us up for years in defence. Ofc we have to balance some outgoings but CB now has to be priority and I’d rather we gambled getting them both in, in time for the tour and worried about outgoings after as you say.
