Why would you sell Dier if all you are going to do is buy Lenglet?

For me its because of the following:

1 - Dier will be 30 in 6 months, Lenglet has just turned 28.
2 - Both are equal in defensive ability, but Lenglet is better on the ball (in my opinion).
3 - Potential to get Lenglet for £5m & sell Dier for more than that to pay for other positions.
4 - Personally I think Lenglet would be better in a team that presses and is on the front foot more which I would like to think we will be under Ange.

I am not saying that Lenglet is a definite, however if we could sign Tapsoba for big money & then bring in Tosin & Lenglet for small fees then that would be an improvement. Especially if we could move on the others for more.

Would we get more than £5m for Dier considering Coady has just gone for £7.5m with two years left on his Wolves contract and although still very limited is a better player.

I personally think we'll see him here until his contract runs out next Summer.

Lenglet and Dier are similar ability. If we sign Lenglet then Dier has to go as can't have 2 of that level. I guess the case for doing so would be simply replacing someone who has been around a long time. Plus we sell Dier before his contract is up for similar money spent on Lenglet who would then be long under contract. We would still need Tapsoba or an alternative as 1st choice and to get another for competition. With Tapsoba comfortable on the right it also means we could be more flexible with getting another centre back who plays either side.

Fair point, I just think a Premier League team would pick up Dier which would invite a higher offer. I'd like to think we could get £12-15m for Dier. Time will tell though I guess!

Glad that Tapsoba news continues the act now or move on approach. Really refreshing. Munn and Ange being on the same page really drives us forwards.

Tapsoba is also just exactly what we need.

Thought this comp did a good job highlighting some of his passing ability, which was mostly on the ground, as well as his calmness in certain situations. I think that's what gives him the edge over some of the other players we're linked to.

Tough one between vdV and him for me. Think if we got Tapsoba over the line, it would be an absolute coup.

It threw me a bit when he started taking penalties. I was not expecting that!

We just got 10m (?) for Winks.

Even if that were all true it doesn't have to be one or the other, if we are getting rid of Dier and we're looking at back up that needn't be comparable quality to Tapsoba then there have to be better options than Lenglet.

Spend money on Lenglet when Dier is already here,
cause Dier's mediocrity will only be here for 1 year, while we can have Lenglet's mediocrity for 3y

The other issue with Dier over Lenglet is that Dier is even worse on the LHS of a CB pairing. Lenglet is more suited to that role and has played it more in his career.

I know it's ridiculous but is anyone starting to think why the hell is this dragging on?
I guess we've been spoilt.

Yes we definitely have haha. Tapsoba has 3 years left on his current deal and is viewed as the future/mainstay of their backline. I've also read/heard that Leverkusen is a strong place financially.

Tah and Frimpong both have a lot of interest as well, with only 2 years left on their deals.

If we're able to swoop in and convince Leverkusen while offering a fair price from our end (per ITK) than that's pretty impressive all around.

If I'm Leverkusen I'm seeing if any good offers come in for Tah/Frimpong so that a year from now I'm having to sell them at half price due to them not signing a new deal. IF they lose those two, they still have Hincapie and Tapsoba as young CB anchors with plenty of experience.

Dier used to be a Def Mid, and has played well there (bit like stones has done for Man C) and his distribution and through balls used to be very good.
I wonder if its worth keeping him to cover Def Mid where his lumbering will affect the back line less?

Anyway, Tapsoba thread - would be very please with his signing if we can pull it off.
Dier can't defend so I'd say best to let him go and bring through players that can.

Seems like he reads the game well and is good on the ball. I’ve very rarely seen him play live but he looks like he’s a little slow off the mark and unbalanced/uncoordinated from the highlights I’ve seen though, probably the only drawback I can see with him. Can anyone that’s watched him more say if he’s very good in 1v1 situations because that’s where those issue’s would be most magnified if it’s actually a problem?
