Do you trust the judgement of the man who said this?

We have a great squad and we owe them a Head Coach who will bring out the best in them and allow them to flourish and enjoy a strong, exciting finish to the season.

"We are in the fortunate position of having within our Club a talented coach in Tim Sherwood.

"We believe Tim has both the knowledge and the drive to take the squad forward."

Sherwood is getting abused left, right and centre (much of it deserved I have to say), but let's focus for minute on the man who appointed him and reflect on the statement above. I thought the bolded statement was at best very optimistic at the time, given Sherwood's complete lack of experience; now it seems positively deluded.

How has Sherwood, at best out of his depth and at worst a complete embarrassment, come to be so highly regarded by Levy? Given Levy's track record of hiring managers is mixed at best, do you you trust his judgement in recruiting the next manager (or god forbid keeping Sherwood on)?

I think overall Levy has been a decent chairman but in this area I now have zero confidence in the man.

Yeah saying we have a great squad is a joke.

The problem for Levy when recruiting managers is the same for us when recruiting players. We can't attract the very best because they want kudos, CL and budget. So that means there will invariably be some compromise.

I would rather spend a fortune in bringing in a top class manager than buying another player.
Getting in a manager that can identify talent and improve players is going to end up making us more money in the long run.
A successful team on the pitch is also going to bring in more investment in advertising and sponsorship.
Its a no brainer...............go and get the very best and give them whatever they want.
Don't take no for an answer....everyman has a price.

But that price is not about salary of manager - we pay amongst the most for that - usually they want a huge war chest, which we can't do. Or it's CL football, which we can't do. Every top club are after the best managers and most of them can offer one or both, we can offer neither.

I think the current silence from Levy on Sherwood's position says way more than the original quote.

They even announced the financials and the positives within the current squad without uttering a word about Tim or his future. Seems ominous to me.

I don't know,I think if you put a suitcase in front of any manager with £10 million in it and its.......... where do you want me to sign.

Redknapp did make top four. He was sacked for non footballing reasons.

Jol wasn't sacked specifically because he failed to finish 4th. He was sacked because Levy had come to believe that he wasn't quite good enough and that Spurs would stand a better chance of success with Ramos.

As it happens, Levy was clearly wrong about Ramos. But Jol's record subsequent to Spurs suggests that Levy was quite right about Jol.
So here's the crux for me....got 4th but fired for non-footballing reasons. We're a football club ffs so unless he was interfering with kids or something similarly horrible, I don't care about non-football issues. And of course we'll never get a clear explanation as to what happened, same as with AVB.

That's the problem with levy and the board they want to look good and come out of every situation at the club never looking grubby but people are not stupid they know where a lot of the blame lays.

It might be the crux for you. But you are not chairman and owner of the company. And, unlike you, Levy and Lewis clearly do care about "non football issues".

Is throwing away a huge margin between third and fourth, ultimately the difference between CL and not CL that season as events transpired, with a third of the season remaining, not a footballing issue?

Regardless of how you define it, i reckon its one of the highest quality problems we've had to deal with in the 30+ years Ive followed Spurs!
Was the situation with Harry really so untenable that we couldnt have regrouped and had another go the following year? With the benefit of hindsight id have preferred DL to try and find a way forward but i guess itd all water under the bridge now.

Great watching Martinez's Everton smash Arsenal yesterday. Can't help going back to the opportunities we had to employ him with us. I had cash on Martinez for our last 2 managerial appointments....not because he was the best manager in the world but because he had good record at places where there were limited resources. His sides play a lot like our idealized 'Spurs' way....open...exciting...pacey......flawed....watchable stuff. The game yesterday was fantastic to watch as a neutral.....he has Everton playing some pretty dynamic football....he even has a modern day Gazza on his books. In truth Man Utd raided the wrong Lancashire club..Martinez and Modric two big misses for them. For us it is ironic that we refused to take the risk with Martinez but employed someone who had never been employed as a first team coach.....this is where money man Levy's judgement really comes into question with footballing matters

Although I kind of agree, you make a false dichotomy here. When we picked AVB he had achieved more than Martinez in the game (he had won things where as Martinez had not..at the time). Then when Martinez got relegated, Moyes had decided he would leave for Utd, hence a vacant managerial position and a manager looking to leave his job appear at the same time. Then of course, we didn't pick Sherwood over Martinez, since Martinez was already at Everton when AVB was sacked. I think when AVB was appointed you would have been hard pressed to argue Martinez, who had managed Wigan into narrowly avoiding relegation every year, would have been a better choice. Luck and timing as they say...and hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I was strongly opposed to the idea of bringing in Martinez after we sacked Harry. Always struck me as a weak personality that was happy to grin and big up the opposition when his team had played poorly. I'm still not entirely certain that he would have been the right person at that time. AVB was a young manager with a good reputation across Europe, whereas Martinez, as you say, had just got a minnow relegated. I suspect the fans would have been less inclined to be patient with Martinez in that first season.

Having said that, I've been very impressed by how he has done at Everton.

What else is the statement going to say. "Tim's a load of shit but our main targets aren't available until summer so we'll have to lump it".
