I know there's been rumours of this for a while, but the Mirror (granted, not the most reliable of sources, unless they happen to have been listening to JD's voicemails) reckon that a deal to sell Defoe to Toronto has already been agreed for the January window:

Tottenham's Jermain Defoe agrees transfer to Toronto of MLS in January window

Canadians get their man with £90,000-a-week deal that blows away interest in the England striker from West Ham and QPR
Jermain Defoe has agreed an incredible £90,000-a-week switch to Major League Soccer side Toronto FC.
The 31-year-old Tottenham and England striker has shattered the hopes of domestic clubs bidding to land him in January by accepting a stunning four-year offer to move to Canada.
Defoe said yes to the deal, also worth £6million to the White Hart Lane club, last week.
It is understood he will discuss the implications for his World Cup prospects with England boss Roy Hodgson.
But the transfer means the striker is set to end his career in Canada.
Defoe's former club West Ham and his old Spurs and Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp, now at Championship promotion chasers Queens Park Rangers, had been leading the chase to tempt him away from White Hart Lane.
But, as we exclusively revealed a month ago
, Toronto gazumped them all with an offer the marksman could not refuse - which will be his Tottenham wage of £67,000-a-week, topped up by bonuses.
The outfit, managed by Defoe’s former Tottenham team-mate Ryan Nelsen, will even fly the striker’s family out with him to help him settle.
Although the deal has been agreed, Defoe is hoping he can stay at White Hart Lane to help the club through their striker crisis until just before the 2014 MLS season starts in March.
The move will draw a line under his frustrating second spell at White Hart Lane.
Despite being a regular goal-scorer for Tottenham the frontman has been to restricted to appearances in the Europa League this season.
Boss Andre Villas-Boas has persisted with £26million summer signing Roberto Soldado as the sole striker in his strongest side.
In the summer of 2012, Defoe signed a new deal extending his contract - which would have ended next July - by an extra year.
Mirror Sport understands he was willing to see out his playing days in Spurs colours.
With his opportunities limited, however, Defoe has chosen to cut his losses and move on.

Wonder if they have a genuine source here, or it's all a fuss aboot nothing. As much as I thank him for the 100+ goals in our colours, I wouldn't be averse to JD moving on at the current time. Albeit I'd hope we have a better plan in place than the trademarked Assou-Ekotto Capital Reinvestment Policy (i.e. fucking nobody) for his replacement.

I personally think Defoe loves the club more that the club loves him. I see no need to disrespect the guy even if he does spend a great deal of time offside. At least he's one of the few players who ALWAYS seems to show he wants it when he's on the pitch, be it as a sub or a starter

Theo Delaney said that it was on but was put on hold this week which he reckons is to do with the manager situation because a new manager might want to keep Defoe.

why would a new manager want to keep defoe? I can't see anymanager stopping the move of a 31 year old bit part player.

If he does I will be sad, I've always loved Defoe. Plus he's been at the club for so long, I can't remember much before Defoe tbh.

Is it wrong that my first thought was "I hope it's true".

Yes, he's scored a barrel full of goals against teams like Wigan and Dynamo PantsItch but now that we've got Townsend, there's no need for Shift And Shoot to hang around.

I've never ever really warmed to Defoe - even when he's done brilliant things (like City last year) and that incredible goal against Arsenal (4-5), there's just something that nags away at me.

Maybe it was that most people tended to be Keane or Defoe (and never both) and I was always very heavily on the side of Robbie.

I will wish him good fortune if he ends up moving but I can't help but admit that I would be more relieved than anything else.

Honesty the best policy after all.

If there is truth in this , then this must surely mean Defoe has given up on the WC . Toronto is in a minor league .

If he goes there , what are we to make of his very vocal agitation for Prem playing time to boost his WC chances ?
Does 90 gs a week change everything for him ?

Was about to say the same. Can't see this happening pre WC. Loan to any prem team would be better.

Not massively fussed if Defoe goes to be honest. Once he has is monthly purple patch each season he just looks average from then on. Get a decent price now for him while we can.

I totally respect your right to be wrong ;)
