Portsmouth is willing to play to Defoe's strength because they have a playmaker in Kanu.

We are a bigger team requiring more tatical variation so we can't afford to start a player as narrow as defoe.

I think Defoe's made the right move and I dont miss him. Things would not have changed if he stayed.

Not sure if anyone remembers a thread just after we won the carling cup, laughing in defoe's direction saying something along the lines of 'you left us and now your never going to win anything'..

Is Defoe cup tied for the FA Cup, as they certainly have an outstanding chance of winning that now.

You know he will score past us. Hopefully he will now get a run out for England too, as its natural for him to take over from Owen.

Bring back Defoe, we're having an absolute nightmare scoring goals without him!

I just want to ask one question (and this not really directed at the original poster.) What is the obsession with Defoe, he is no longer our player? (unless it is only a loan deal.) We have had many players leave the club that have given greater service to the club than defoe but, don't get the same sort of reverance that Defoe gets from the fans. Defoe was always professional when he was at the club and I wish him all the best in the future (unless he is playing against us) but, that is as far as it goes for me and too keep dragging his name up is a little disrespectful to the current strikeforce we have at the club.

Despite the title of the thread I thought that the original post was more to do with using Bent?

those who don't give a shit, are you one of those semi football fans that only know stuff about the club you support and that is it?

Point of this this thread is getting at: 1: how we could have benefitted by keeping him, and 2: how he might cause us problems in the match at the weekend.

1 being the long term issue, and 2 being the short term.

so this is a good thread, and you should give a shit

I thought so too.

Unless Keane or Berbatov has a massive slump in form or gets injured any third striker (let alone a fourth striker) is going to have massive problems breaking in. Jol tried rotation last season and it didn't work; it was only when Keane was injured and Defoe got an extended run that things picked up, and only when Keane returned that the seasn recovered. It was clear that he'd abandoned the idea this season and persevered with Keane and Berbatov; although Keane was pretty ineffectual for the first few games it was the correct call. Unlike last season we had no problem scoring goals; the problem was the wheels coming off at the other end.

The difficulty is, we need a quality third striker in case something happens, someone who can step in and do a really effective job. Yet how does he stay sharp if he's not getting games? I've noticed that Torres has only really taken off since Benitez stopped resting him; earlier in the season he was putting a quite high proportion of shots off target.
