This is one angle I haven't seen mentioned much - is there any talk of a new deal for Gallagher at Chelsea? It sounds like the opposite, that a new deal isn't forthcoming. It's hard to get a read on how these owners work, nothing really makes sense, but I would have thought that agreeing a new deal to protect the value of the player is something all clubs would consider in this scenario. Unless they really really do need to sell him now, and that immediate money is worth more to them than a higher fee in the future?

But they can't offer him a new contract on the same or less money and let's be honest they can't offer him a bit more money either, they are going to have to raise it enormously, doubling it even, which they can't afford to do when they're trying to get their wage bill under control. That would also make it harder to sell him too which they will still need to do.

They are gambling on the player not kicking up a fuss and staying whilst they try and work out the wage bill.

No guarantee he doesn't do a mount and refuse a new deal then leave.

Hojbjerg is a great Jose type player with his positional intelligence and bravery, not mobile or comfortable enough on the ball for Ange’s style sadly.

He's terrible defensively for a Jose player.

He's not, it's probably his best trait, his best performances for us is playing as a single DM, no nonsense, asked to do nothing more than win the ball and pass it simply.

What he's expected to do now in that role is pivot more with whoever's the 8 and also be very good on the ball and press resistant which he isn't.

He also knows himself he's not good at these things and will constantly hide from the ball when the centre backs have the ball and look for him because he doesn't want that smoke when he does lose the ball.

He's actually a great passer of the ball when he has time, he's just awful at being pressed.

The hiding comment would’ve been a fairer statement in the early months of this season but we’ve seen him become more creative in his passing (forward with flick passes to players both directly and in space) and his body positioning (more side on taking a pass, more awareness of corridors to move with the ball forward into). He’s definitely buying into the AP way of playing a lot more and trusting of the process. He tended to feel he had to use his combative defensive, simple passing as he’d never played in a system like this and felt other players simply couldn’t do the DM duties as well as he could (he did do a great amount of covering at the back while our full back gaps at the back were exposed so much early on too to good effect don’t forget)
I can see him having conviction now in being more positive and creative and likely the UTurn as to him staying in for now.
he’s an excellent leader and a very good player.

The litmus test is just to see how far we’ve gone vs Brentford today compared to how they dealt with us in that very first game and how far the players ability (inc Hojbjerg) to work in the Ange's style of football system has developed since then.

interesting to see not only did Gallagher not start as Captain (Chilwell did) but he was also hauled off after 45 mins.

Obviously not seen how he/Chelsea played but wonder if we'll hear some noises later tonight over his future again.

Why are Skipp and GLC 'likely gone in the Summer'? Gio is now happy here. I know he picks up a lot of injuries but he's a great squad option all the same. Skipp would walk over broken glass to stay here.

I definitely agree he has improved alot under Ange, all the points you mentioned, however tonight was more of a tactical masterclass at half time. We changed the midfield from the usual 6/8/10 in Bentancur, Skipp and Maddison to PEH being the defensive anchor-man furthest back with Maddison and Kulu taking turns to drop deeper. I also noticed we played alot less passes into the 6 position where usually Biss, Bentancur or Skipp would drop deep and completely bypassed it by playing more directly into Maddison, Kulu and also Udogie and Porro when they were higher centrally.

It was actually really effective aswell and I think Ange might use this tactical tweak more often in games like today where the opposition sit back but their forwards also press our back 4 and deeper midfielders more aggressively. Most of the silly mistakes we make are from trying to be overly intricate and cute in our own half and we turn the ball over.

That personnel and tactical tweak let us play much quicker and direct and bypass their press which also suits PEH perfectly as you can tell he absolutely hates being played the ball deep under pressure which is where most of his mistakes come from.

Never any doubt they'll sell him they're the ones putting it out there. The price is never going to be agreed though, silly money.

Hhmm, I dunno. I like Skipp but I just think he's always going to be a bit of a limited player. He came off at HT last night and certainly doesn't offer anywhere near the level of play that Sarr does, who is younger than him.

We have missed Sarr and I feel that Skipp isn't quite the right fit to cover for Biss as a 6 and also not quite the right fit to replace Sarr as an 8. Gallagher would definitely be a good option as an 8 for us so whilst I don't see it happening, Skipp leaving and being replaced by Gallagher makes us better and gives Skipp a chance to go and a regular starter somewhere in a system that fits hims better.

Just my onions.

Mad that people see different things isn't it? For me he was the weakest behind Bentancur (sorry Benta but this was a bad one)
