Big clubs sometimes need to pay a bit extra to get their top targets, because there are so few targets among the big teams. If paying a few million extra means we our attack and midfield is sorted for the next 4 years then it's worth it. The alternative is losing ground on our rivals.

That's how I judge transfer windows: have we improved relative to our rivals or not? Last season we definitively went backwards in terms of the quality of our squad relative to the teams around us, and come the start of this season there will be no prizes for noble failures or rationalisation of inactivity - we either improve the squad or we don't, and we simply have to find a way to do it this year. Excuses won't cut it.
We literally only need one extra quality midfield player for a good window now. 2 of BF, CE or GLC. It would probably take £100m net spend for the window. Really not unreasonable and even then it seems like Wanyama and some others could be on their way.

We should just count ourselves lucky that we've made a lot of internal improvements. Skipp, Walker-Peters, Parrott are all arguably improvements on Trippier, Dier, and Llorente. Without these young lads we'd be really screwed.

Sort the midfield and Eriksen situation out and hopefully next summer there is minimal business that needs to be done. I dream of a Spurs transfer window that doesn't get my heart racing with anxiety.

The flip side to this, if Real come in with a decent offer and he ends up going there instead, would that put Eriksen’s move completely off the table, and as such settle him back in with us.

Or he sits tight until January and waits for a pre-contract offer from any of the big teams and leaves on a free next summer.

Eriksen HAS to be sold this window if he refuses to sign a new deal, he can't leave on a free. It would be a disaster. That's why we need to buy Bruno and GLC now to give us a fallback option.

We have no say at all in the matter if Eriksen decides he wants to play out his contract. We can't force him to leave this summer if he wants to go on a free transfer next year, and doing that would seem to open so many options for him you'd think he'd be crazy not to. Whether Eriksen stays or leaves this summer is entirely his choice and we can't do a thing about it.

Convinced that we will get GLC and we will go all out for Bruno, should we fail to get BF I think we will go for someone else as well as GLC.

Feeling optimistically positive regarding the next 5 days, Poch kept referring to the fact he knew he’d be happy with the squad at the end of the window.

I believe we'll get BF. There's no Real Madrid interest. Man Utd dealing with Dybala.
BF on Monday, GLC Tuesday. Then we'll Chill with smiles on our faces till Villa. It's written in the stars buddy.

We can freeze him out though. A year is a long time in football, and the euros are next summer. Think he'd bite.

Here's a video that Tifo put together about him a year ago. Key points:
  • Capable of playing both as a No. 10 and as a deeper CM
  • Was the second-most creative player in Seria A in his final year in Italy, immediately became one of the most creative players in Portugal
  • Press-resistant dribbler, draws a lot of fouls
  • Strong defensively, making as many tackles and interceptions as Sporting's DM in 17/18
  • Followed up the season that the video was based on with ~50 combined goals and assists last season (not in the video obviously but worth noting)

Perhaps worth noting that the guy who wrote this Tifo profile (Portuguese league expert, very statsy) is saying that BF would be a bit of a risk...

Isn't this obvious, though?

Unless he's something utterly stupendous, no one is coming to the Premier League and scoring/assisting anywhere near fifty a season. If his combined total at the end of the year was fifteen to twenty I'd be over the moon at buying an incredible player.

I know what the guy's saying, but it just seems a fairly obvious take.

Agreed, just looking for similar to Eriksen stats from my end.

I don't think he'll replicate his Sporting form, but in that team he was pretty much the only danger man, in ours he'll be one of many.
He's also constantly moving which will help him get space, and his shooting technique will translate to any league. We can only hope.

Bruno Fernandes has informed Sporting Lisbon that he wants to join Tottenham
  • Fernandes held talks with Sporting president Federico Varandas on Friday
  • Tottenham made an offer but are short of Sporting's £64million asking price
Bruno Fernandes wants Sporting Lisbon to allow him to join Tottenham this week.

The Portugal international midfielder held talks with Sporting Lisbon president Federico Varandas on Friday to inform them of his desire to leave and hopes the club will not stand in his way as he sets his heart on a move to London.
Sporting's high valuation of £64million has discouraged several Premier League clubs including Manchester United from making an offer as they believe the 24-year-old to be worth closer to £35m.

Bruno Fernandes filmed leaving Sporting Lisbon's training ground to go and negotiate a transfer... with Tottenham keen and 'Real Madrid entering race to sign Portuguese star'

Tottenham have made an offer but are understood to be still some way short of Sporting's desired price.
Fernandes scored 31 goals from midfield last season and Mauricio Pochettino believes he can take the workload off Dele Alli and Son Heung-Min who play the supporting roles for main striker Harry Kane.

Tottenham sent a delegation to Lisbon earlier this week and have continued talks with Fernandes due to play for Sporting against Benfica in the Portuguese Super Cup on Sunday.
Paris St Germain, Marseille and Real Madrid have also shown differing degrees of interest in Fernandes but he wants to join Tottenham.

Fernandes was seen leaving Sporting training early on Friday, with CMTV saying that it was so that he could negotiate a transfer.

The problem that is skimmed over regularly is that we don't really know what Poch asks for, either. People would put 2 and 2 together and say "GLC is Argentinian, so Poch obviously wants him", but he might be not be his first choice. A bit like how Messi would be Poch's dream signing, but he's not his first choice because he's not available, but then if he actually became feasible, that would change the situation on who his first choice was, etc.

A lot of confirmation bias goes on, and as much as people like to point and blame Levy for his behavioural patterns, lots of people like to casually ignore Poch's track record on players too. We shouldn't assume that Poch wants the option we see as best, and people would probably change their stance on getting him 'who he wants' if it turned out to be players like Ballotelli.

It was much easier with Redknapp as he had no mind/mouth filter in from of a sky sports mic.

"Confirmation Bias" would be a great name for a transfer rumors forum:)

My only real worry for this guy is where he fits in, as for all his good work rate I’m not sure he’s robust enough for a CM2 without a pure DM next to him, but we seem to be moving away from using a pure DM. Then in AM, for all his great output in Portugal, that’s probably down to him being too good for the league more than natural attacking instincts. I think he looks like a CM3 midfielder, which we don’t overly utilise.

That said, he has the raw ingredients so if Pochettino is the great coach we herald him to be, then Bruno should work out.

Watching the obligatory YouTube videos, he really strikes a ball well of either foot. Does appear a decent Eriksen alternative.
Portuguese league does produce a lot of talent, some of which can translate straight away, Wolves are the proof of that.
Has also played a decent amount in Italy with some success, so not strictly a Portuguese only experience to go from.
There’s a lot of noise around this. Hoping him and Lo Celso both still happen if Eriksen is off.

Yes of course, but if we signed, say, Dybala/Bruno/Zaha over GLC then I wouldn't see it as not necessarily failing to get who he wants (because we don't know whether GLC is someone he wants over the others).

I am a bit nervous over signing 'single season performers' since he wanted Janssen, mind.

That's potentially where £60m+ on a Zaha/Dybala looks a bit more reliable than £60m+ on Bruno/GLC, as I'm not sure if they look good over the back of one season (not heard of either before we were linked).

He may well like the idea of Dybala - of course. I'm only going on the premise that GLC has been the consistent link all summer whereas Dybala has only cropped up in the last week or so. I certainly would like to hope that Poch does have second/third options unlike last summer where the ITK was that it was either his favoured player or noone at all.
