It seems Tottenham Hotspur’s meeting with Sporting in Lisbon didn’t go very well.

According to local outlet Record, the Lions have rejected the offer made by the Spurs at the Portuguese club’s headquarters this afternoon.

Record says the meeting lasted until about 17:30 (same time zone). Since the bid was less than €70m, Sporting president Frederico Varandas has rejected it.

The report says Tottenham’s emissaries will take the answer back to London (either physically or otherwise), and a new meeting between the clubs could happen in the next few days.

I wouldnt say that’s totally unexpected. Surely we’re not going to turn up and provide exactly what they want in the first meeting

Nothing on RTP yet.

I'll keep an eye out to see if they start reporting this..

Happy with this as Eriksen replacement with Lo Celso also coming in or alternatively as a GLC alternative with Eriksen signing a new contract.

The bottom line is, we need an additional player who's going to create chances for us.

Why would we send anyone out there just to make an offer that's then refused? Surely we'd only be sending people when the deal is close and the nitty gritty needs to be ironed out.

Tottenham are exploring a deal for Sporting Lisbon's Bruno Fernandes as an alternative to Giovani Lo Celso.
Spurs want to add an attacking midfielder to their squad before the August 8 transfer deadline and they have been locked in talks with Real Betis for Lo Celso for months.

But they are no closer to agreeing a fee with the Spanish club, who are holding out for the Argentina international's full £88million release clause and have rejected a £52m bid.

Spurs have now opened talks with Sporting for Fernandes, who scored 23 goals from midfield for club and country last season.

In mid-June, Spurs strongly denied widespread reports in Portugal that they were interested in Fernandes but the club has since decided to pursue a deal and local media claims they have sent two senior officials to Lisbon in a bid to finalise a deal.
Kilpatrick guessed this in a tweet and now writes it in his article as fact. Fucking hell

If further talks are planned then the gap between the price offered and demanded must be bridgeable.

Be optimistic.

Sporting rejected a proposal from Tottenham by Bruno Fernandes. As RTP advanced firsthand, the English club sent an emissary to Lisbon to try to hire the Lions captain. However, the proposal was far from 70 million euros and so did not convince Frederico Varandas.
At this time there are other clubs interested in the player, which means that Bruno Fernandes can still leave Alvalade in the coming days.

Following Manchester United's alleged interest, Tottenham sent an emissary to Lisbon to try to sign the midfielder but Bruno Fernandes' proposal was far below € 70 million and was rejected at a meeting with SAD Leonina.

Sporting captain Bruno Fernandes continues to practice with the Leonina team preparing for the Super Cup match against Benfica on Sunday.

Doesn't seem that farfetched tbh.

GLC was allegedly always a target independent of Eriksen leaving and if we've finally given up on him signing a new deal it makes sense that we'd look for a replacement.
Yeah, the thing that concerns me is if we can't sell Eriksen this summer.

The point is, I can't see us spending £120-130m on Fernandes and Lo Celso with Eriksen still being with us. It would pose a problem from a squad numbers perspective and also we wouldn't be able to recoup any money for him next summer.

Perhaps we will try to shift CE for £40-50m somewhere.

Just seems weird that JJ categorically denied we were interested. And now this. If Fernandes was always on list then I just don’t think JJ would have called the previous reports a lie. We’ll soon see though.

Things change though don’t they.

It was always going to liven up going into the last week of the window. It’s when we normally act.

Was in Lisbon a couple of months ago and went to watch Sporting’s game where they pumped Beleneses 10-1. He scored a hat-trick that day without barely getting out of first gear. Pretty clear he’s far too good for that division. He also impressed as a young player in Italy as well and going back to Portugal has really helped him round out his game. Doubt he’ll translate those numbers to the premier league but he’s definitely ready for the step up.
Thanx!
