yep JJ - again it's all about opinions - to me Bentley was the real deal today - and I'd love him at Spurs

what wasn't fair comment was on my remarks about Lennon - I wish people would read before they criticise :) I said TODAY Bentley looked twice the player Lennon did, and while that wasn't an exact scientific assessment - for me Bentley looked way better than AL today

for me our two main priorites are keeper and CB - but i've been convinced by other SCers another priority is a mid player - not sure if Bentley alone would be enough - we probably need a defensive mid too - but it all depends how much money we have to spend - what positions JR decides are priorities etc

Sorry about that as it was a quick glance through but I thought Lennon was fairly threatening today so although I acknowledge that Bentley had the bigger impact today but I still don't think he is twice the player Lennon was today. Then again, it's a matter of opinions so we just have to agree to disagree.

As for the positions matter, I think alot of our transfer plans hinges on whether Berbs is staying or leaving as if he goes, then a replacement striker will be top priority. Although CB is important but we now have Woodgate, Daws, and Kaboul so it isn't as bad a situation as GK, and depending on Berb's decision, CF. I wish and wish that we will get a creative midfielder/ impact winger in for next season as I think we need someone like that in midfield. Why else would Ramos keep asking Berbs to drop back to midfield because no one else can provide that telling pass other than Thudd (Maybe Keano too but he was off today) in our squad.

fair enough bg :)

I honestly don't think Daws is up to it - hence why I think Cb is a priority - obviously as you say if Berbs goes then we need a striker big-time

my priorities are based on us keeping all our bes players and Bale returning - if Bale isn't th player he was we need a LB too

Yee of little faith. JJ and Zokopops are our best CM pairing and have been all season.

they have? is that why our midfield has been so poor? because they are our best CM pairing :eek:mg: i still really dont think they complement eachother weel enough to be our first choice pairing for this season and not for next, we need better

I see all our midfielders as squad players, who are all capable of coming in and doing a job when needed but, not of that higher standard that we really need.

Hi nidge :) I can see your point - even if I don't agree - but given our desperate need of a goalie and CB - plus pehaps a LB - how can we afford to buy four new mids - I just don't see it

yep COYS - but apart from Bale name one good one-

maybe gunter - but why doesn't Ramos play him?

I said perhaps a LB - it depends on Bale recovering or not - if he doesn't we need one - cos Lee chimbonda gilberto don't seem up to it/are going anyway

46 Years Ago Today

Spurs 2 Benfica 1
European Cup Semi Final (2nd Leg)(Lost 3-4 on agg.) Spurs came so close to reaching the Final but they couldn’t pull back the two goal deficit against the reigning European Champions. In the first leg in Lisbon Spurs had two goals ruled out for offside and they were determined to come back strongly as they had in earlier rounds of the competition. However, their task became even more difficult when they went a goal behind after 15 minutes. From then on Spurs pounded the Benfica defence, Greaves had another goal disallowed for offside but eventually equalised in the 35th minute when Smith scored. Spurs continued to force the visitors back and in the second minute of the second half, Blanchflower scored from a penalty after a foul on White. The supporters roared Spurs on and they threw everything at Benfica, hitting the bar and missing some chances but couldn’t get that extra goal. Benfica were greatly relieved to hear the final whistle.

(Thanks to Topspurs)

We wuz robbed! The ref was bent!

I was at that game and sobbed my heart out when we lost 4-3 on aggregate even though we'd won the game 2-1. But what a team that was. Greavesie's goal was definitely not offside and what a difference the right decision would have made.

I can still see their goalie, Costa Pereira, sinking to his knees and kissing the crucifix around his neck when the final whistle went because we'd thrown everything at them and played our hearts out. How we failed to score several more goals was unbelievable.

I agree that we definately need a new Keeper and centre back and in an ideal world a right midfielder to battle it our with Lennon for that spot. A proper top class central midfielder (and leader) with Jenas, Zoko and Huddlestone fighting it out to play alongside him. A left midfielder because we still don't have one and as much as I like Steed we need the balance that only a left footer can provide. Of course if Ramos sees Bale as more of a midfielder than full back we could be looking for a left back as well.

hi nidge -as I said before - I'm not counting on Bale yet till he gets fit again - if he does then I don't think we need a LB - but after Bale's injuries I'm taking nothing for granted

LOL @ Bentley being 'devoid of technical ability'.

This forum gets more ridiculous by the day.

That is a ridiculous misquote. I said that Bentley is devoid of the TRUE technical ability TO SUCCEED, obviously referring to the top level which is where many people have stated that he belongs. If you compare him to a counterpart from the continent, technically Bentley is MILES behind his competition, for example Iniesta, who, whilst he prefers to play in the middle, is often played wide right for Spain. In terms of pass precision and completion rate, he is in a different league to Bentley, whilst if you look at someone like Jesus Navas, there is another example of a player who is by far more gifted than Bentley-the England game against France contained more than enough evidence of his short comings with many a cross going out of play or straight to the keeper.

To be honest, its not just Bentley, most English players are lacking in real technical ability which is a main reason that we didnt qualify for the Euros, but if you were to give me fifteen million pounds to spend it on a winger there isnt a cat in hells chance of me even looking at Bentley who, when faced with top class opposition, will always have his faults highlighted.

You know, if you're going to use quotation marks then you might as well use the actual quote, rather than construing it to mean something that wasn't necessarily intended.

I think we need to invest in a left winger before we consider giving AL some competition, although if we do sign a left winger, Steed could compete for either wing...

We have one. His name is Bale. He's shown more going forward than in defence in the few games he's played for us.
