Totally in to this

can’t just buy youth and potential all the time, would be getting a ready made player in their prime with PL experience that would instantly upgrade the entire defence.

As nice as players like VDV and Tapsoba are you still don’t know what you’re getting with them and defence more than anything is helped by maturity and reading of the game. One younger, one in prime is the best blend of CBS to buy for instant results

At the start of the window Laporte was the one I wanted for our defence. Now we’ve landed VDV and seeing how ready Destiny Udogie looks in recent games I’ve completely u-turned on this. Would much rather Per Schuurs who could push Romero who may not even see himself here in the long term future and the Dutch pair could be our new Toby and Jan…

I'm not convinced that Laporte is right for us. His lack of recovery pace would worry me, massively. Add to that, if he's playing then he's on the left side, so we're either not playing the new upto 50m euro man or Udogie. Both who I think are going to be vital to how we play moving forward.

The pragmatist in me thinks this would be a sensible buy

The romantic idealist in me would prefer SIlva, who would inevitably become the best in the world, and we would win the CL. Hurrary

I agree. We should be targeting Topsaba, Inacio or Silva.

Sidestepping the issue of using FIFA for speed estimates, I just wanted to add as a further comparison that I looked up Toby and Jan in FIFA 17.

Toby - 66
Jan - 67.

Not that different from Laporte, and FIFA 17 covered the 2016-17 season when we played a high line with an aggressive press and only allowed 26 league goals. Pace is useful but reading the game and intelligence counts for a lot. At any rate, if your defensive plan relies on your CB winning several 1v1 footraces with pacy wingers every game, it might not be the best plan.
All great points

Well he’s played in a high pressing Man City team for a few seasons so I assume he’s comfortable in a high line seeing he was one of their best defenders for a period.
Last season's Citeh had a back three, didn't they? I know they didn't use conventional wing backs, but it was mostly three CBs.

Laporte
Mick VDV

Romero
Phillips

Would be a great mix of experience and potential in this group for this upcoming season without Europe. Just need to ship out Sanchez, Dier, Rodon, Tanganga, Davies in a few weeks lol

A starting-quality CB who can play either left or right is perfect for our current needs IMO. Romero gets injured and suspended a fair bit, so a CB who can slide across to the right would be ideal.

If VdV is a rotation option in the LB role, and I think he could be, there would be plenty of opportunities for him to play.

It's gonna be Davies and udogie lb. Can't see us bringing him in and playing him left back.

If he plays at a higher level than Davies he'll earn the place in the team. We've already seen that we're susceptible to cross-field diagonals, the fullbacks need to have recovery pace in this setup and Davies doesn't have it. If VdV settles quickly we should be looking to move Davies on in January, IMO. He played LB at times in Germany and there's no reason to keep him out of the side if he earns it.

I think laporte would be class signing. He's fantastic on the ball, very strong positionally (arguably more important than pace in a high line) and an experienced calm voice. The last part I think is especially important. Romero is romero. VDV, Udogie and royal/porro young. We need a calming voice (esp with young Gk). Someone that can do the basics and tell the others where the gaps are, etc. And, we have Phillips and Dorrington coming through, so having an experienced head to learn off day to day in training is huge.

For 30m this just feels to good to be true. I genuinely think he'd be the key to the puzzle (being greedy, I'd like a pacy dribbling winger too..)
All really great points.

I would still be concerned about his lack of pace but as you say he is exceptional positionally and a calm experienced head which would rub off well on Romero and VDV's development.

For a good price wouldn't be against it. Also agree we really need a pacy dribbling RW as well as a ST.

Those 3 positions and we can be a real force this season.

This guy could literally be anyone? We had some rando the other day say Dier was off to Saudi which turned out to be complete BS.
The Saudis are spending like drunken sailors on shore leave. But Dier? Don’t think any sailor got that drunk …

I got alot of stick for saying that Levy have put ut in a shitty situation because of his attemt to block Saudi affairs betweend PL clubs, but now all the other clubs will be able to offload and we will still be stuck with Dier, Ndombele, Sanchez and all the other guys...
