Is he striker or winger?
Both. He’s become a very versatile forward capable of playing as a striker, winger, or even as a number 10.

Here is a breakdown of the positions where he had featured for Lyon this season before he suffered a season-ending injury in December.

I wanted to point out that he scored a goal in each of his two appearances against RB Leipzig in the Champions League group stages this season — playing as a striker in one match and as a CAM in the other.

He’s also the captain of the Dutch national team where he has also featured across the front line, but primarily as a centre forward.

He played as a striker for the Netherlands in the 3-1 victory against England in the UEFA Nations League Playoffs last summer where he had 6 shots on target, 6 key passes, and 2 assists. Our own Stevie Bergwijn played alongside him on the right that game.

Media outlets have reported he wants a move to the Premier League this summer. He’s been linked as the “primary target” for Arsenal.

Turns out Memphis also featured for Lyon in a friendly match against Celtic today in which Lyon won 2-1. He played striker alongside Moussa Dembele — scoring one goal and hitting the crossbar with another shot.

Here was the lineup:

Here is the match highlights:

Full disclosure Mods: I realize this is the Milik thread, and we haven’t even been linked to Depay [yet], so I will relax with the posts about him now [I’m sorry, I don’t know where else to post this].

But he is a very exciting player who checks the boxes for us contractually / financially, so I hope we are considering him as a striker option.

Memphis would be a great signing. He’d fit brilliantly into Mourinho’s technically skilled, hard bastard player template

This playing out from the back will cost england in future also ... Depay looks like lacazette type forward when he playy central... I don't think jose likes this type of central forward in his team ... I think jose will try to buy someone like adebayor, llorente, giroud, milik mould striker than depay type..

Ps: Btw did memphis play alongside ndombele last season?

The other strikers have been a mixed bag of styles. I think the type of football we want to play will be key. If we continue this counter attacking system, then hard work and mobility are the two key aspects, look at how Kane busy a gut to get in support yesterday. That’s not the archetypal Mourinho CF historically. Couple of the early links were Muriqi and Dzyuba, do they have that level of mobility, or are they Llorente clones.

If this happens would surely mean they no longer want Milik:

I would love to get Zapata ahead of Milik.
Zapata is even though 29, has had 2 brilliant season for Atalanta who are free scoring having broken the serie a record. His hold up & link up play is right up there with best no9 in world today.
3 good years from him will more than help us get his money back

Targetman likes striker blossom even in their mid 30s ...

Prick normally scores against me in Fifa. Typically a shit header from three yards. I hate his binary guts with all my earthly passions

If Milik is slow as described I wonder what the thinking is in trying to bring him in? The counter-attacking footie we saw against Leicester calls for fast breaks from deep with multiple runners. If that's how José wants to play, then I wonder what the strategy is going forward.

I really hope Brentford miss out in the play offs and we go for OW.

Jose likes slow targetman in the mould of giroud or milik or llorente ... They help you to retain possession

I think it's also that he likes them against those narrow bus parking teams. Keep putting in the crosses and eventually you will find the target man to head home. There's also that they can back into the opposing CBs and cause havoc to their low block if we react quickly to second balls.

Absolutely gutted we couldn't get Giroud in the end. He'd have been perfect for a couple of years.

Kane is pretty good in the air, but for me the point of a second striker for us should be one that's unbelievable in the air. Somebody that can be brought on to change a game and can be used as that backup. If we want pace up front, Son can play there.

Muriqi looks a better option to me then. Admittedly the Turkish league is not a great level to judge from, but his ‘highlight reels’ show a player able to use his size very well, and also decent mobility, coming deep, drifting wide, or making a nuisance of himself centrally.
Dzyuba is the other focal type striker, but other than the fact he’s available on a free, he looks a little more cumbersome.

The last powerful looking striker from the Turkish league didn't fare so well at Everton. Not saying the same will happen here, but forwards who get by on being physical in weaker leagues often look ordinary in the prem.
