Middlesbrough's record £14 million signing Afonso Alves had a bizarre explanation for signing a contract to join Dutch club AZ Alkmaar shortly before agreeing his move to Boro.

Lawyer Pim de Vos, who represented Brazil international Alves at a Dutch tribunal hearing to strike out the Alkmaar deal, said: "Afonso can't help it. He can't read and write. He does not speak English. He does not control anything in his life apart from a football on the pitch."

Mail.

Afonso has 14 timeshare flats, 93 credit cards and is currently awaiting a huge deposit in his account from Nigeria. He also thinks he owns the Brooklyn Bridge.

Maybe we can sell him Vauxhall Bridge and pretend it is Tower Bridge.

It worked with Robert McCulloch and helped us get rid of London Bridge.

How would not speaking English be a disadvantage at a Dutch tribunal?

Isn't this what agents are for?

"He also thinks he owns the Brooklyn Bridge".

Best line of any article on any subject ever. Totally brilliant. It can't possibly be true, but who cares?

That is ridiculous, and also, disgraceful, it doesn't sound like he's been looked after well at all. 93 credit cards!

How ironic; two such stupid comments in a thread laughing about someone else's stupidity!!

The quote is the true bit from the article. The bit outside of the quote (about the timeshares, credit cards and Brooklyn Bridge) are BOF's personal comments that he stuck on top for comic effect.

:stupid:
