Tottenham Join Race for Teenage Sensation

Tottenham Hotspur are the latest club to join the race to sign exciting young Southampton starlet Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, according to reports on Talksport.

In the last month both Arsenal and Liverpool had sent scouts to the south coast to assess the talented winger who has caused a stir in League One with a number of impressive displays.

The 17-year-old has helped Southampton climb to second in the league starting nine matches and helping himself to four goals as well as three assists.

With the ability to play on the wing or as an attacking midfielder, Oxlade-Chamberlain has drawn comparisons to two former Southampton wide men who have both carved out successful careers with Premiership clubs.

Both Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale started their careers at St. Mary's before sealing moves to north London. Now it seems as though Oxlade-Chamberlain could follow in the Bale's footsteps and opt for White Hart Lane.

Having come through the Southampton academy, the exciting prospect made his league debut last season at just 16 years and 199 days and soon established himself as an important member of the first team squad.

Southampton are desperate to hang on to the pacy winger and would not want to lose him during the current transfer window. However, they are aware that it is just a matter of time before a big club makes an offer that will be impossible to turn down.

Sportsvibe exclusively revealed that Liverpool representatives had sent a positive report back to Anfield in December and were hoping to secure the youngsters signature this month.

However, Spurs stepped up their interest by sending scouts to watch Oxlade-Chamberlain in action against Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday and may now attempt to lure the winger to London.

Spurs have a good record of giving young players the chance to shine with both Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale handed plenty of first team experience at relatively young ages.

Spoke to a Saints supporting relative about him over xmas. Reckons he'll be better than Walcott but not as good as Bale - probably worth a punt for us at a sensible price.

Liverpool have prepared a £10m bid for Southampton's highly rated teenager Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as they attempt to rebuild for the future and to back Kenny Dalglish's pledge of support for Fernando Torres with action.

The 17-year-old son of the former England international Mark Chamberlain has made only 14 starts for the League One club but is regarded by many at Southampton, and Liverpool's scouting department, as a better prospect than Theo Walcott was at the same age. Walcott's current club, Arsenal, are Liverpool's main rival for the signature of an attacking midfielder who has scored six goals this season, and the clubs hope to complete a deal in this transfer window.

Liverpool have not yet made an offer for Oxlade-Chamberlain, the second youngest player to feature for Southampton behind Walcott, but the club's new owners, Fenway Sports Group, are willing to meet the south coast club's £10m valuation. FSG, advised by Liverpool's director of football strategy Damien Comolli, want to invest in young and coveted talent, and the teenager's arrival would serve as a statement of the new owner's intent should he choose Anfield over the Emirates.

Anfield scouts view Oxlade-Chamberlain as one of the finest prospects in the country and, though he would likely be nurtured into the first team at Liverpool, the club are anxious to address the lack of support for Torres.

Liverpool want to rebuild for the future? they dont have the funds to do that, they have to build for now! 10million on a kid for 3 or 4 years time is just madness for them, even if we paid that i would be shocked! 6 million maybe going up to 10 may be better

Sky Sports are reporting that Liverpool and Man Utd are to bid for him in the next 48 hours and Fergie and Commolli were both watching their game last night, which he scored the first goal in.

Saints won 6-0

Finally, the club realise what a mistake it was letting someone with a name like Troy Archibald-Henville was, seeing as it's obvious anyone with a cool name like that has to eventually become Captain of something, whether it be a football team or a starship... actually, yeah, Troy fitted the starship thing better, huh?

Anyways, Captain Oxlade-Chamberlain... yeah, it works!

Fergie would also have been looking at his keeper who is on loan.

I'm a fan of O-C. He's a great young talent....

But 10m quid? Really?

Surely the same kind of deal that we did for Bale. That was reported at 10m but really 5m up front and in total cost us 6m, I think.

A very interesting situation. Liverpool may admit that this season is a write-off. If so, AOC could get 10-15 games experience, even if some are as sub. If he does, he's got a good chance of making the grade and being held up as a future example of Comolli's genius for scouting. Suspect King Kenny would play him, although maybe not with Glen Johnson.

Either way, this is a seriously talented kid and is one to keep an eye on.

My mate is a saints fan and he won't shut up about this kid! The last time he bugged me this much to come to St. Marys with him was to see a certain Mr. Bale...!

Never seen this kid play but to those who've seen him: how would he do as a RMF you think?
What sets him "apart"? Walcott looked like world beater at that age due to his pace - which overshadowed his totall lack of ball control. Is more of a "balance" player?
