A message from the club to fans about Sunday

I had a call today from the club about our game on Sunday against Portsmouth. As I'm sure you are all well aware, some of our fans got into trouble at Fratton Park earlier in the season for chanting what were deemed "racist and homophobic" songs (and one in particular ).

Some of you may know that I wrote a report after the Seville away game in 2007 and went to a meeting at WHL with the club officials. So they've asked me to pass on a message for Sunday. In brief, the message is this: the law will be out in force so we've got to behave ourselves! Not only is there the possibility of the return of our former captain (although I bet he cries off 'injured'!), but it's the first game between the clubs since JD came back to us, and Harry Redknapp became our manager. And all in front of Sky's live TV coverage.

The club is working with the police to make sure the game and the day passes off without incident. There will be people outside as well as inside the ground and extra stewards in the away section. The club is aware that some people may be planning to change the words of the infamous chant, hum it, or wear scarves to cover their faces. The club says please don't do it - none of that will help!

So the major Spurs message boards are being contacted to help spread the message that this is a chance for common sense to prevail and restore the reputation of our fans. And let's face it, the most important thing is not who played for us or them before, but that we get three points to hoist us up the table.

So spread the word among your mates: no SC chants, no Ledley song. Let's stick to the classics like When The Spurs Go Marching In.

So let's sing about our players - and Come On You Spurs!

As opposed to what exactley what else could they do?

First of all you spelt 'exactly' wrong.

Secondely, the club could take it less serious therefore some fans may think they can get away with chanting racist or homophobic songs, then get us reported again to the FA and get a more serious punishment such as league points deducted or forced to have an empty stadium for a certain period.

Thanks for passing on the club message BOF. Hopefully it'll be the minority to which the message applies and they'll be sensible enough to either stay away or keep stchum.

Will we be allowed to boo, or will people get arrested for that? :-|

We all know what's going to happen though - the club can make as many appeals to message boards, forums, supporters groups, notes in the program, announcements before the game etc. - If the Pompey fans, who lets remember aren't the ones under the spotlight here, start to rip into our fans, a huge number will instantly figure that an eye for an eye, etc. and give it back.

Not all of our fans visit message boards, read press releases or even buy a program and you can bet, even if they have acknowledged the requests, if ten start singing, twenty will join in, then more and more.

It would be nice to think that we can all act sensibly, like grown ups, but that's been disproven enough times now for me to think we'll maybe get a decrease in volume of the crueler chants, but they won't stop entirely.

The club just covering its arse, so to speak. Like they did at Seville, send us your accounts so we dont get fined or kicked out by uefa. If it all goes pear shaped they can say, "well we tried, you know what they`re all like when they get together".
I`ve been told Pompey have only got 1700 tickets, lets hope the strange thing with the bell didn`t get one.

Don´t even think about Sol Campbell, they´re using vans, much like those used to see who hasn´t paid their licence fee. If they catch you thinking about Sol, you´ll be in serious trouble!

This is fucking ridiculous... no Ledley song?!?!?! No clean versions of the Sol song?!!? I mean wtf?!!??! I don't sing the 'original' song, but the new song is humorous and completely clean!?!?!

I'm not going to this, but woulda been up for a lot of sarcastic cheering and "I LOVE YOU SOL" sorta screams whenever he got the ball!

Thanks for passing on the club message BOF. Hopefully it'll be the minority to which the message applies and they'll be sensible enough to either stay away or keep stchum.

Let's hope so, PT. We'll definitely be under the spotlight.

I did manage to glean a few other titbits in the conversation. Firstly, the club is aware how hated Craig Bellamy is by a lot of the fans (me included!), but if he's a player that Harry wants, we'll go after him. My offer to personally ensure there was no untoward chanting in exchange for not buying Bellamy was not taken up .

On a more serious note, the club are keen to stress that this fan 'policing' is not a one-way thing. They know that our fans get subjected to (particularly) anti-semetic chants, but they can't do anything unless a complaint is made. So if you hear any, make a note of the number of the steward or police in the area and write to the club with the details. The reason that the Portsmouth issue was taken up by the police was that SC himself made a complaint.

I've asked for confirmation (one way or the other) as to whether we can register Pavlyuchenko for the knock-out stages of the UEFA Cup. No reply on that yet.

Regarding transport, the club is meeting with London Transport regarding the large number of Vic line closures on our match days at WHL. My cry of "Ah ha! I knew those bastards were Gooners!" was met with "Actually, a couple of them are Tottenham fans". :-|

Good to see SC is flourishing and some familiar names still tread the boards!
