I had a call today from the club about our game on Sunday against Portsmouth. As I'm sure you are all well aware, some of our fans got into trouble at Fratton Park earlier in the season for chanting what were deemed "racist and homophobic" songs (and one in particular :wink.
Some of you may know that I wrote a report after the Seville away game in 2007 and went to a meeting at WHL with the club officials. So they've asked me to pass on a message for Sunday. In brief, the message is this: the law will be out in force so we've got to behave ourselves! Not only is there the possibility of the return of our former captain (although I bet he cries off 'injured'!), but it's the first game between the clubs since JD came back to us, and Harry Redknapp became our manager. And all in front of Sky's live TV coverage.
The club is working with the police to make sure the game and the day passes off without incident. There will be people outside as well as inside the ground and extra stewards in the away section. The club is aware that some people may be planning to change the words of the infamous chant, hum it, or wear scarves to cover their faces. The club says please don't do it - none of that will help!
So the major Spurs message boards are being contacted to help spread the message that this is a chance for common sense to prevail and restore the reputation of our fans. And let's face it, the most important thing is not who played for us or them before, but that we get three points to hoist us up the table.
So spread the word among your mates: no SC chants, no Ledley song. Let's stick to the classics like When The Spurs Go Marching In.
So let's sing about our players - and Come On You Spurs!
