I keep saying it, but there’s no plan for attacking.
Yep. He just ‘plans’ for someone to do something special. Slow build up, sloppy passing and hoping for some speed merchants to get something or Kane to sprinkle some magic. So poor and not what is required by supposedly a top international team. It’s just a load of individuals.

akin to Nuno days.

It’s very reminiscent of Spurs under AVB. But Southgate has better players at his disposal and is blessed with some of the best attacking talent England have had in decades.

I know he's been shit so far, but how many times has Bowen got to run in behind before Philips spots him instead of passing to Walker at RB? We've absolutely no bottle for a pass.

I say play Johnny Bairstow and Ben Stokes at CM second half. They'll have the balls to play a through ball.

Says everything for what Southgate has done for this team, in that I'd forgotten this match was even happening.
Flick on the telly and we're losing.

Sooner this idea-less, timid, boring pillock is gone, the better.

Still, I suppose he's making it even less likely that I'm gonna bother watching any of the sham that is the world cup.

Another 45 minutes of Southgate-ball and another chance to talk about how dull and lifeless we look.

Phillips could be replaced with a stack of bricks in the second half and even that would offer more as he seems to be moving to hide behind their front players all the time. When he does get the ball he just knocks it straight back, even if there is the option to turn and go he just bounces it back.

Gallagher seems to be playing on top of Bowen meaning at times when the latter moves wide we have no midfield on that side. In fact in a 433, I'd expect to at least see someone looking for the ball into their feet in the half spaces. Instead at times we have some weird 415 with everyone trying to run in behind and no options for the man on the ball.

Like the look of Guehi though. He seems to be a good find for the England side this last year. I just wish we had a manager whose plan of attack wasn't just hope for a goal from a corner or a moment of magic from a sub.

I was thinking more nuno tbf. It’s a shame as Southgate helped build some camaraderie etc but this is a results business and his decisions, tactics and stubbornness has messed us up. Need some proper experience and nouse to sort this out. I think we have too many of similar type of player too. Not enough players wanting to get stuck in and do dirty work (functional players) many promising players without enough grit and experience.

I've said before these games are an opportunity to run the rule over some different players, not the best England team. Fair to say this team tonight is not the best England team by a long shot.

We've had spells like this under Southgate before where we look absolutely abject for 4-5 games but we've tended to turn it around and go on decent runs. Would prefer us to have a shit run now rather than in the WC itself.

That said, our squad is now really deep and full of talent unlike 4-5 years ago and we're capable of so much more than this.

The FA are dinosaurs so they'll probably keep Southgate until 2026 but I think we could use a breath of fresh air after Qatar.

I think someone like Parker, Howe or Potter would have us playing much, much better football.

The only reason I realised this game was on was because the 5th day highlights haven't come up on the iplayer yet.
Watched yesterday's and when I realised I had to wait a bit, I thought I'd see what was on the telly...

Hurry up BBC, I really can't be arsed to watch the second half and in all my 47 years, I don't think I've ever felt that about England.
All that talent and a manager who's too scared/timid/pathetic to use it properly.

Yeah Southgate has definitely got the man management aspect of the job right, seems like the players really like him etc. and there’s none of that old bitter rivalry nonsense between the players from different clubs like in the 00s. But the football he’s serving up is just dross, and I think his successes in the last two tournaments have been more down to luck than his tactical acumen.

It's not the best team but I'm beginning to worry that Southgate refuses to pick the best team.
He seems to have his favourites and while he was good with the kids, then bringing them through, I don't think he can properly inspire and organise the senior pros.

Looks like Bastoni had a terrible game - Seeing lots of tweets from Italians mocking him...
