The abuse this guy has received from some of our fan base is nothing short of disgusting! The lads 22yo, is adjusting to a new team & style and clearly from watching interviews etc with him is a confidence player. Therefore being subjected to what he is being is only going to add to any concerns/negative thoughts he has at this moment in time. I've seen enough in parts to feel there is a serious player in there who with time and confidence can do a brilliant job for us. When everyone is fit he's currently a very good bench option who can cause teams an awful lot of problems, especially against tiring legs. He is lighting quick and can deliver a fantastic ball, he just needs a bit more composure. I feel he also needs to increase his work rate as I've watched him live a few times and from purely an eye test, he doesn't seem to cover anywhere near the same distance our other wide options do. This may look very different when assessing stats however. The lad needs time, he's been with us for half a season in a team annihilated by injuries. People did the same with Kulusevski after 2 games ffs!

Some people can only look at the price tag, and if the performances don’t match that then they go directly to “he’s shit”

I’d love for Ange to come out and say something about these idiots - attacking a young player in his first season, it’s not on.
Would be great if the club came out and said we didn’t need their support any longer. They would not be missed.

How do we know that the people abusing Johnson are Spurs 'fans'? Could be from anywhere, couldn't they?

Rince and repeat. Why would anyone be surprised at comments online? Social media reaches a global audience so I remain skeptical the majority of keyboard cockwombles are even 'supporters'. I'd press the delete button tomorrow on social media given the chance.

But players should realise this is now part and parcel of having an online presence. In the face of marketing and generating popularity / wealth you've got to accept there is bad side. It isn't going to change.

I know what you mean but some Spurs fans have enough previous to have the finger of blame pointed at them from the get go.

Jenas, Lennon, Dawson, Dier, Davies, Sanchez, Kulusevski, Porro, now Johnson. There always has to be a scapegoat, and those players are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Now all previous scapegoats are either out of the club or have become key players and rehabilitated to a greater or lesser extent, they find a new target.

You forgot Emerson. He was villified at one point.

Has Johnson had abuse at matches then? I wouldn't know. Anyway, he's done the right thing turning social media off. It's a double edged sword at best for people in the spotlight.

Obviously Sanchez and to an extent Dier are the most extreme examples as they also copped it at matches. The Bournemouth game where people were booing Sanchez remains the nadir as far as fan behaviour goes. But it's less than a year since Porro also muted his socials and fans were pouring scorn on him online.

It's just so fucking depressing that even though the vibe of the club has changed so much and we've stood so firm through a very difficult spell with injuries, some people need someone to vent their negativity at. And now the target is a young lad who's only had half a season and who by and large has done quite well with the odd poor game here and there. It's disgusting.

It is depressing, but we all know that some football supporters are as thick as pig shit, and that won't ever change.

It's the same in all fan bases everywhere though. It's not going to change. Players need to learn how to manage any impact it might / might not have.

Players will and always have been singled out in stadiums too. It won't change.

What's the solution?

That's for the individual players to work on.

Also it’s one thing to vent about players in the match thread on here if they do something frustrating, it’s another thing to hound and abuse them on social media.

Agree entirely, my only constructive criticism is that I would like him to show more grit and determination. Compare him in attitude to Sarr and Udog where they are much more proactive in making things happen, rather than reactive, waiting for things to happen. Perfect example against Man U when supporting PP , he was slow to move towards the ball and was easily beaten to it. But a raw talent which I hope will blossom.

Why should we have to accept that people can't change for the better?

The it is what it is attitude bugs me so much.

Even our best players get horrific abuse at times. I've heard some horrific things shouted at Son at games.

Sorry to bug you. But what is a practical solution to a an entire planet of people wired to the internet?

Turn it off or ignore it.

I just blast some Slipknot and scream along for three minutes, that usually calms me down.

No seriously I just don't understand how people can be so shit. I don't want to accept it, I want to fight it. Otherwise the shits win.

Ha, good band! Especially for drowning out noise.

I get it. But it's not just 'spurs fans'. With the premier league now a global product, and players seeking to profit from it (and why not) with online accounts. Then guess what's going to happen?

In this day and age of AI etc how do we even know if the comments are by a real person?.blows my little mind a bit.

Back on point, it's obvious Johnson has the tools to be a top player. But he's way off that at the moment and with a fully fit squad is on the bench / cover. Let's see. The 2 week gap may well have given him a boost.

Which is all fine.

I think the most important factor here is its just too early to have a strong opinion formed one way another.

He's a young player who has a got a big move, and lets see how he develops under Ange.

I think he's talented and will produce consistently given time when his confidence grows.
But if this is true, how do scouts know whether to sign a player or not ? They have to make decisions based on less than the 12 full matches plus YT vids we have to check on.

The insults continue to pile up I see , you are a 'cretin' if you think Johnson is a squad player we hear.

When people talk about a toxic SC these days this is the source. Some people have an opinion about a player and argue their point sensibly.

Then those with a differing opinion steam in with the insults and fury, this thread is packed with them. These are the central figures in the toxicity we see on SC these days. They simply have no tolerance for opinions differing from their own.

C'mon Mods.
