Had a good game yesterday. Hopefully the signing of Reggie is a kick up the backside to improve his performances, particularly going forward. He won't be our starting LB, but at the very least He should be a very competent back up.

I’d imagine the vast majority of players thrive on competition. Davies doesn’t come across as Johnny big bollocks but equally he never striked me as some kind of half arsed professional who just wants a easy ride all his career.

Professional athletes in any sport are obviously super competitive, I said just before we signed Sergio that I reckon Davies was loving it as stuff had probably gone a bit stale for him and since Rose’s demise he’s had no one pushing him.

It appears Sergio is a totally different player to him as well which helps in the sense that Davies will know there’s certain things he’ll do better than Sergio but likewise he’ll know he’s going to have to really up his attacking contribution if he wants to keep his place. I bet he’s looking forward to the challenge.

Yeah. That cross was great.

I really like him as a back-up/rotational player. Versatile. Professional. And in periods a very decent player.

Obviously he could be a regular starter for many PL clubs, but he shouldn't be for us - and now he isn't. If he is happy playing the role he will now get then fantastic. And I believe he will. He will still play a lot of games and he is only an injury away or some bad form from Reguilon to start big games for us.

This is how players get shit from fans when they have a bad game. They get built up so much that fans just assume stuff. Let’s just see how the season goes. I hope he carries on from the Chelsea game but equally I won’t be surprised at all if he has a few shakey games and needs a bit of time to settle. He’s only a kid.

I think there’sa chance that a lot of people will be disappointed when they realise Reguilón isn’t coming in as automatic outright indisputable number 1 and that Davies is going to still play quite a lot for us.

I can't tell if the improvement is because of the new arrival getting Davies to up his performances or simply that the new arrival has meant a shift in tactics in which Davies is greatly benefitting.

I felt like he started pushing forward more regularly as it became clear we were getting Reguilon. I think the game before he was announced (maybe Plovdiv?) I thought it looked like he was playing in a way that would suit Reguilon instead of as a 3rd CB

I think we’ll see on Sunday who the #1 is

Don’t think that’s how squads work mate. I fully hope Reguilón establishes himself as first choice, and does so starting with this Sunday too, as I far prefer watching someone like him than someone like Davies, but there’s no way Davies, as a player Mourinho clearly trusts and values, is suddenly going from almost every present to being a bit part player. He’ll play plenty too, and we may even see both together on occasion.

I suspect Davies' improvement in attacking play has more to do with the defensive stability of our midfield and the instructions to get forward more than the arrival of Reguilon.

JM always wants 3 players back. Previously that was 2 CBs and Davies at LB but now Hojbjerg seems to be splitting the CB the way Wanyama and Dier used to when they played under Poch so JM can allow Davies to get forward knowing we have defensive stability behind him.

The important thing to remember in comparing the two is that they are used to playing different positions. Reguilon is a Wingback and Davies is a fullback. Anyone who has played football at a decent level will know that a Wingback is more like a Winger that tracks back than a defender. Even Doherty has said recently that he's found himself retraining his positioning as he's more RB than RWB now.

Or most likely the opponent yesterday

Ben was at his best when he was competing with peak Danny Rose for the first choice LB spot IMO. Not expecting it to be any different with him competing Reguilon.

If he stays injury free, Davies will still be an important player. Ability to rotate is key and he's reliable defender, even if he does not have the pace or attacking instinct of Reguilon.

Surprised no one give this fella a mention? Had a great game last night, captaining the side, playing full of pride. Some shades of younger Azpilecueta I thought.

I thought he has about reached his ceiling, but somehow under Mourinho, he may be pushing beyond his capabilities even further.

Thought he was solid without having to do too much. It's just nice to have a left-footed player playing at on the left side of the back 2. I'm not saying that whoever plays there has an awful left foot (Dier, Toby), but I don't know whether they pick out the pass for Vinicius for our first goal.

If he was taller I would be all for playing him there. But I think he’s just a tad too short for CB. I do think in another life he would have made a good DM.

he reminded me of Blind at utd, left back with not a ton of pace and height but looked comfortable at centre back and made some great passes through the night that got us attacking. He has obviously played in a three before but looked comfy in the two.

He played with Toby against Arsenal in Carabao Cup at the back. I'd be happy with him there than Sanchez atm.

Solid performance as per usual with Ben, he gets far too much unwarranted stick on here, simply because he’s not a marauding wing back.
