Johnson has never played in a progressive team before , whether it was Forest or Wales.
So, he still needs time to adjust his game to what our system needs.
Mentally as well, he has got to be instinctive & not think too much. Most of his assist have come when he has done it instinctive
This is a good point that I haven't seen raised in here, not only is he young and coping with a big move, he's also learning a completely new way of playing the game.
He's doing well and will only get better.

If we zoom out a bit, we can see that 1st team from Vic to AM is title winning quality. Johnson is a good player
no doubt about it, but with so many stellar talents already at the club many are looking for a golden period for Spurs in the near future.

We are missing absolute killer attackers to complete a trophy winning team and those of us who are questioning Johnson's place with us are not saying he isn't a good player, but feel the need for an attacker who is to attacking what Vic is to goalkeeping...an attacker who is to attacking what Romero is to defending...Mads is to AM etc....ie Top level.

If johnson can improve to be that player then great, but atm some wonder if he will ever fit with the high ambitions many of us have.

Ange has already said that the front third is an area that needs improvement. Maybe with all the stars back things could work out without new stellar forwards, but imagine our team with devastating strikers too.
Imagine how good he‘ll be when he’s done five months here.

He isn't setting the world alight but has all the attributes to succeed. So while settling in and improving game by game, he still manages to be fairly productive, especially in decisive moments. That is the mark of a good player.

Some people will never be happy, but they will soon eat some humble pie. :smug:

Watch his run before his assist and how he loses his marker. He's going to be a big big player and people need to get off his back
He ran a nice route and the pass from Emerson was excellent.

Yeah, few players will ever reach Bale levels. Bale at his peak would walk into any team in the world.

The comparison was more about Johnson becoming a bit stronger and more confident which I think usually comes with experience and maturity. Bale grew into the player he was and I can see Johnson doing similar given the right time and support - even if that’s not Bale levels.

i totally agree, his had enough moments to say there is a player there.

we could not say that about Richy, till recently lots Of players need time and show virtually nothing to start with, so hopefully he can become a very good player.

his had 1 goal 4 assists in the league isn’t bad in 14 appearance, I’m guessing it’s really 10-12 appearances in game time as his come on or been subbed so 1 in 2-3 games for goal contributions isn’t bad let’s be honest he puts a very good ball in.

It’s all about how he develops his game.

He has already demonstrated that his basic wing play to get behind a full back is there and he can play that first time low cross in behind the defensive line.

he has also shown his ability to get into the box and into goal scoring positions. Also his general work rate is there

now he needs to develop that higher level goal scoring ability, and how he can effect games when there is no space behind the full back to run into. This will require practice from Brennan, and greater team setup/build up play development (ones twos, interchange, that sort of thing)

Can he development? Of course he can and early signs are he will.
Can we (the team) develop? Of course we can and early signs are we will.

Not the finished article, but that’s the point. He has pace and instincts which are hard to develop, now he (and we) need to develop attributes and moves that are easier to develop, at least with practice.

We seem to be mastering the Johnson right foot low cross on the run for a tap in. We will lose that when kulu moves out to the right. I'd like kulu left forward for a bit

Yeah - Deki is a quandary. He is too good to leave out of the line-up, but I think Johnson is a better pure RW, and obviously Madders is a better 10 (and we have better options on the left when everyone is here)

I suspect it will be Johnson who gives way to become more of an impact sub.

I think Deki is smart enough to be an option in the 8 position as well, especially against lesser sides or when we are chasing a game.

This little experiment already paid off against Sheffield United.

I thought he was good tonight? Over 10 touches in the opponents box and looked pretty dangerous. He just needs to go from being a kid to grabbing the game by the scruff. I feel if he believes he can be a 20 goal contribution winger than the ability is there.. just needs that little extra! Will come in time 🤞

Fully agree. Had a moment tonight where he put the afterburners on 1-on-1 against O’Shea and it was terrifying, then he cuts back into traffic and it comes to nothing. Once he believes in himself and sees the ball hit the net a few times it will start to come for him.

I fully believe in 6 months time once the patterns of play become natural for him and he starts acting on instinct he’s going to tear it up. Too much natural talent to not be good in this system.

Booed by our own fans tonight apparently, don’t think he was that bad just needs bit of luck

People were literally saying he was playing amazing after 20 minutes. Hit three really decent strikes too.

Had more chances he could have done better with and poor decisions at times but feck me, people are expecting perfection...

I think he's going to be great when we have a settled team and he gets a goal or two.

Touch was great early on, got worse as he got more tired and we got more desperate. Possibly trying a touch too hard.

...and that's pretty much football... 🤪

I think he's quality he is rapid clever movement his first touch is brilliant. I just wish we would play the wingers not inverted. His pace is wasted when he has to cross with his weaker foot or cut inside giving the opponent a chance to catch up. He looks so much more dangerous on the right.
