Wish him nothing but the best. Another who gave his all to the club. Between his health and the current style of play, he's not a good fit but that has nothing to do with how we treat him. I think back to early Dier especially when he and Dele were yucking it up. That's who i will remember and that is who i will always cheer wildly for.

I hope he plays a part tomorrow. As I sense it will be the last time we see him at home. Deserves a warm applause. Top lad. And wonderful servant for the club. Hope he lands on his feet.

Would personally like to see him in the MLS. Think he would love it. And maybe, if Dele gets fit and mentally in the right space, they can join up and rekindle their bromance!!

Should have stuck in as a DM imo

He was absolutely brilliant for a couple seasons playing that position then I think he got a hernia? After that was never the same player... such an odd injury to change the trajectory of a players career.

Edit: Thinking about it, the precise moment it all went wrong is when he shaved his head.

I’m not sure it was the injury to be honest, although it didn’t help.

I think it was more a case of him doing well when he was surrounded by really good players like Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Dembele and Wanyama. Then his limitations were exposed when it was time for him to become the main man.

Agree.

For me his peak performances was when he had Vertonghen and Alderweireld behind him, both top quality. He was sometimes a third centre back and sometimes a very deep centre mid. HIs role was attacking that 1st ball every time while the CBs swept up behind him.

This resulted, among other factors, in us having the best defensive record in the league.

But this is a very niche position and rarely used. Ultimately he's not good enough as a centre back or a centre mid for a top 10 Prem side. Though Bayern might prove me wrong.

Makes me feel embarrassed when i see the hounding out of players who have put a decade in to this club without disrespecting the club.

they deserve better, such a lack of class.

Harsh to single him out imo, given that no one bar the best striker in the world didn't seem exposed and limited in those teams.

Yeah, it’s one thing to critique a players suitability for the team but another to go at him on a personal level.

Agree, it’s disgusting and they get dragged into every conversation just to make any dig at them possible.
It’s not like it’s their fault if they’re not good enough anymore or don’t have the skills for this style of football. Some fans act as if they’re doing it on purpose or something.

Can't remember a hernia but he suddenly withdrew from a game due to acute appendicitis that needed an immediate operation in December 2018 and there have been reports since that suggested he's struggled with his metabolism and had other stomach issues since that operation. And if your gut keeps acting up, trying to eat right and train right as a professional athlete becomes very difficult.

Whatever happens with him this window he has never deserved the stick he's got.

Also I think Poch personally thought he was better as a CB.
