Unless we have someone of Bale quality, any others taking the no 9 shirt will always have trouble and a mental hurdle to overcome to be as proficient to replace Kane. But Son is never in Kane's shadow, and he will be shining as the main man now. I can empathise with Richy, knowing himself he's the Brazil no. 9 and yet having so much difficulties here. I wouldn't be surprised to see Brennan gets off the mark quicker than him and he continues to down tools. I would love for him to do well here, but I just feel he will suffer due to his mentality and character. Like you know Maddison will have no problem hit the ground running. The vibe is just different.

Should have sold him during the recently closed Transfer Window whilst we could maximise his transfer value.

Why is he ‘downing tools’?

I see a player low on confidence and frustrated with himself. I don’t see someone having a hissy about playing time and putting himself above the team.

He’s a good lad who gets very emotional. But those feelings are typically focused inward. He owns his shortcomings. Probably too much.

Perhaps I misunderstood the context?

This won't happen, and I doubt Richys morals would allow him to but; If Saudi came in and offered the 60m £ we paid for him, would you take it?

I'm fully behind Richy and still think he'll come good BUT...if Sonny keeps playing like he did today, it's hard to see him getting much game time.
Son's pace and finishing today were back to the player we know and levels above pretty much anyone in the league, let alone Richy.

It's a make or break season for the lad but if Son keeps up this form, it's hard to see where the chances will come.

If he’s to have a future here, it has to be on the wing, or a back up to Son at striker.

Either way he shouldn’t be starting.

My take on things is that we need consistency up top. If two strikers score, say, 18 goals in a season, but the one scores one per game (so scores about 1 goal every 2 games) and the other scores 6 hattricks, the likely scenario is that the team with the latter striker is probably guaranteed 6 wins due to his involvement, but he doesn't help the team in 32 other games in the season. The former striker would be helping his team in many more games, 18 for the season, and only doesn't help in 20 games. Assuming neither gets assists and ignoring defensive contributions in this very simplistic view, I would much rather have the former striker in my team.

Richy, for me, will be more like the latter. Contributes nothing in many games and might score a goal or a brace here and there. We need someone who would offer a consistent contribution, whether that be via goals or assists.

Because that's arguably his best position? I see what you mean, though. It's just frustrating.

He can’t dribble though - players in those wide positions in Ange’s system need to be able to face up opponents 1 on 1 and get past them to deliver cut backs in the area.

don't think he would be effective when Son is on the pitch too, their roles somehow are duplicated (a finisher). I wonder he would be more comfortable with 2 of Solomon/Johnson/Perisic starting on wings

Yeah I think in the 9 he would need quick players either side that can can take a 1v1 and create the chances for him.

Not me, mostly because that would leave us really short on CF options.

We bought Richarlison as back-up/competition for Kane... it would be madness to sell Kane and then his backup in the same window, without having bought in any replacement.

So apparently from the SC scouting masters, he can’t dribble and beat players 1v1, he has no technical ability, has no first touch, not strong enough and falls over, can’t pass or assist and doesn’t find space.

It’s amazing how he has managed to become a professional footballer, let alone Brazil’s number 9 and scouted for 3 different prem teams…

Son was great yesterday, but will come times where he isn’t and we need something different up top. Richy is a confidence player and sure will bring something we need at times where others can’t.

Haha he has better technical ability than he has shown this season but his strengths really are more about his incredible work rate, pressing, movement and never say die attitude.

I personally think he’ll come good as a rotation option for the CF spot. He just needs to relax and get his confidence back. I think being the ‘replacement’ is making him overthink all his actions which is having a negative affect on his performance.

Still think he will play his part.

He is emotional and he does let things get to him.

But at the same time he has a strong mentality as thats what has made him that player.

For Brazil and at Watford and Everton, he was that 'clutch' player.

Would score goals in tense or important situations.

He is probably doing a lot of overthinking and every little thing that goes wrong gets to him.

But thats the kind of player he is. He kinda 'feels' the game rather than keeps a calm head in all situations.

I agree. Hence why I don’t like the boot being dug into him, when he clearly has qualities. Just like if and when Ange faces a defeat, he needs time and some slack in adapting to a new manager and system and having a heavy tag around his neck being Kanes supposed replacement.

Ange mentioned that he doesn’t just look at goals but overall performance and that Richy still has much to improve… I am in particular surprised by how many duels he loses, when ball is played to him back to goal; I expected him to be stronger andbetter awareness

That said, Sonny is also very poor at receiving the ball back to goal, but against Burnley, because we pressed so hard, and our midfield played so well, Sonny’s strengths came to the fore

This also means that Sonny will get the nod for the #9 for now

I'm a bit worried, for these reasons, that Richie will become a new player we'll have trouble shipping on.
