Yeah. Romero very much feels like the sulkying kind, if things aren’t going his way.
I very much thought that was the case during the run-in. He did not seem to give a flying fvck, particularly the Newcastle debacle and Liverpool first half.

Ange has mentioned character a few times so don't underestimate how important that will be. If, say, Mason has told him Romero was a real problem in the dressing room and uninterested on the pitch, that won't go down well. We need people digging in when times are tough and maybe he just isn't that sort of player.
Don't confuse passion and character with throwing yourself into silly challenges and conceding penalties and cards.

Also, let's talk about taking responsibility and standing up as a leader. I didn't see any of that. Romero is as culpable as anyone else for our appalling defensive record last season.

Ok, it may mean starting with 2 brand new cb's which will mean patience in the short term but it's a new dawn and everyone has to prove they're up for it, as well as up to it.

If we were selling Romero it would have to be for huge money and for me we already need Tapsoba and VDV. As such I'd say we'd need 3 quality additions there if he left. Romero is genuinely one of the best CBs ITW when he's on form.

Personally I'd like to see VDV come in and bed in at LB. I think a back 4 of Emerson, Romero, Tapsoba and VDV would be a very solid base for us to build on.
Agree, if we sold him we would need a third CB who was of top quality. Would be a backwards step to replace him with VDV and Tapsoba. Really hope this is just Trix thinking out loud.

Would anyone take both Tapsoba and VdV and Romero was sold?

🤔

Yes, providing we also signed another CB - even if it was Lenglet.

I don't think Romero is here for the long term, I think he thinks he's a bit above us.

Which he may or may not be. But given he spends a third of each season injured or suspended, and could command a fee of £50m+, if he wants out I'd cash in right now.

His stock is high.

Would rather have Romero, Tapsoba and VDV to be honest...
Signing both Tapsoba and VdV is of course the right thing to do. We are absolutely leaving ourselves short if we don't sign two CBs this window.

Because it wouldn't surprise me if Romero did go next season or thereafter.

We need contingency planning. We've been poor at that for years.

This, it wouldn't suprise me if he wanted to leave to get CL football. I suspect, as you've written he thinks he's a bit better than us right now. Plus, I'm not attached to him, he's good but he's rash.

Would be happy to sell Romero for good money if we use it to get VDV, Tapsoba and tosin.

we would be considerably stronger.

I have said it previously but I see VDV and Tapsoba, if we bought them, as a first choice pairing in a year, even if Romero stayed.

I’ve never quite got the Romero love in

feel like he is a liability as likely to let you down as save you in a crucial moment

Not a patch on prime Ledley, Verts or Toby

that said the best of a currently v bad bunch and would need 3 in if we sold him

Would be loathed to selling him unless he categorically wanted out.

That being said, trying to think of actually where he'd go and what team would afford him?
I think there is a very good chance that he’s feeling disconnected with the club. Last season hit hard and im sure a it left a number of players questioning their futures. Rumours that he was/is unhappy are probably true to some degree.

But he is only back at training today, I think there is always the chance that his feelings about being here will change once he’s seen how the atmosphere and vision has changed. Personally I think selling him, unless he has specifically asked to leave, would be a very bad move and VDV + Tapsoba should be brought in as well as keeping Romero.

Yes, provided a third CB was signed for backup. Romero is good but gets injured/suspended a lot. Tapsoba+VDV are both young and could develop together into an elite partnership.

I’m the words of Kenny Rogers; “you’ve got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em.“

I actually think there’s a lot of potential there with Romero, but he can be a liability with his aggression. We’ve not seen any improvement on that in the two years he’s been here. Coupled with the rumours he’s unhappy maybe it is time to cut and run. As others have said, his stock is relatively high and if we want top dollar for him, the time is now.

We’d definitely need a 3rd CB signing then though.

Not sure how we can judge that? All became all of the sudden experts on van de Ven and Tapsoba when we have absolutely no clue how they adapt in this country and whether they are the next Vertonghen or Sanchez.

At least keep Romero another year to have a smoother transition.

you can never be too aggressive being a defender, obviously it has to be controlled but feared defenders are usually avoided on the pitch by opposing players. look at stam, people wouldn't go near him. you'd need to be duncan ferguson level of crazy to go there.
You can when it's not controlled aggression. He can complete a game without a card of some colour.

Given Romero’s contract, what we paid, his quality, and his international stature, we’d be getting our pants pulled down if we sold for anything less than 70 mil. Don’t think any team in Europe right now has both a need for a new RCB and at the same time the money required to sign him. To me it just doesn’t seem possible he’d leave. Even if he wanted out. Juve ask for him after selling Chiesa and Vlahovic, that’s the only way I’d see him going. Also if Kane had his way he’d probably be playing for City right now. Just because a player wants to leave doesn’t mean they won’t show their best if they’re forced to stay.

Then there’s the whole other issue of a Tapsoba and VDV pairing being too passive in their defending styles as a partnership. Not enough duel engagement between the pair, which isn’t ideal if Ange plays the way we all think he will.

I don't see a market for him at the moment, Bayern just signed Kim Min-Jae, PSG have a great group of defenders, Italian clubs are poor, Barcelona have no money, Real are saving all their money for Mbappe apparently. That said, if it's a real possibility, I'd sell Romero if it gives us 70%-80% of what we paid back. I see the potential of a good player, but I don't know to what extent you can train his aggressiveness, I think it's something more negative than positive in his game. But I'd rather have him and Tapsoba than VdV and Tapsoba
