After another lacklustre game (being very polite) in which we managed to muster 0 shots on target against a team whose confidence has been shot to pieces in recent weeks, I think there are a lot of people who are now coming to the realisation that something drastic needs to change at the club. Have things been worse over the past 30 years? Most definitely. However, these have been the two most boring years of football I can remember watching and I don't think I'm alone in believing that the responsibility for what we're now witnessing needs to fall upon those that run the club. In my opinion, they have no accountability, even though they are surely the people who should be held most accountable. I'm not a short-sighted Levy hater - I can acknowledge all of the good he has done to ensure the financial stability of the club and how we have made undoubted progress during ENIC's tenure. In fact, that makes it all the more frustrating because we have had a great platform to build on, to really push on and challenge for the league, but we have been allowed to stagnate badly and now seem to me to be in a real mess with no distinct identity or plan. I'm very aware that you have to be extremely careful what you wish for - I'm not even saying it has to be ENIC out but they have to start being accountable for their lack of action and ambition. First and foremost we are a football team and that do not seem to be their priority at all.
This is really a place where I thought people might be able to help me answer the question of just what power we, as fans, hold. Do we actually possess any power at all in helping to decide the future of our club or are we pretty much insignificant? It certainly feels like the club could exist without us now, such are the revenue streams from TV, stadium events, merchandise etc., and that is quite a depressing thought. You might disagree that the buck stops with Levy and ENIC, and I'm certainly not going to tell you that your opinion is any less relevant than mine, but they have been the constant throughout the failure to address huge holes in the squad that have existed for years, through hiring and firing Mourinho (a coach with world-class pedigree but a soul-sappingly boring approach to football), and then promising a return to our 'attacking DNA' before hiring an even more defence-minded coach whose Wolves side were renowned for never scoring a goal in the first half of games. For me, there's nowhere else to look now. We could hire Poch again in the future (a man who had lost his way badly towards the end of his reign, as much as I love him and what he did for us) but he'd still be hamstrung by an ownership that has never shown any sign of changing its ways.
As a season ticket holder, I acknowledge that I'm part of the 'problem' because I willingly hand over my money every year, even though I fundamentally disagree with how the club is now run. I know that if I make a stand by not going to a game then I'm only hurting myself because they've already got my money. Similarly, I know if I don't renew my season ticket there'll be a queue of people willing to take it. Like thousands of others, those aren't options I'd want to consider as I love the club and I (used to) look forward to watching us play. For every single fan - watching at the ground, watching at home, completely disinterested at the moment - we have an emotional investment in Spurs and it would be good to feel that we had some element of control, seeing as we are supposedly 'the heartbeat of the club'.
So, what can we do? Is there anything you are currently doing in order to try and affect change at the club? One person won't make a difference but enough of us together might. Do we coordinate a mass stay away for a game so Levy might start to get the message? Do we go to games but not spend a penny at the stadium? Do we try and organise protests to get a message across? Who actually has the power to make those at the top of the club start listening because it feels at the moment like they are blissfully happy raking in our money every week and settling for mediocrity on the football pitch. Any thoughts on where we are now - how do you think things could be turned around so that actually going to watch us play is a more enjoyable experience? Or am I just a miserable bastard who needs to cheer the fuck up? I'll be honest, it does feel like that sometimes It just seems like if that's the case then there are quite a few of us around these days.
