There were different reasons for each of the players you mention being 'finished before they were 30'.

Owen had serious hamstring injuries and lost his pace. But he actually joined Man U in the year he turned 30 and was there until he was 33, so not really finished, just a totally different player as he had no pace and was effectively a goal poacher super sub (17 goals in 52 games across 3 years).

Torres had serious knee injury that also took his pace which was his prime asset.

Rooney I think of as being like a boxer whose weight balloons between fights, eventually the booze, cigarettes and junk food caught up with him. He never relied purely on pace, but he was at Man U for 18 - 31 years old and won everything.

With Rooney and Owen they played a lot of PL games as teenagers - Rooney 109 and Owen 79. Torres played a similar number of times as a teenager for Atletico Madrid (debut at 17, captain at 19). Kane did not start a PL game for us until his 21st year.

Kane does not drink or smoke, has a healthy lifestyle 365 days of the year and does not rely on pace. Like Sheringham he can play until he is in his mid-thirties IMO.

Also I think today's players are doing more science-based fitness training and nutrition. Hence the number of mid-30's athletes in a variety of sport still competing. Not to mention Harry Kane's favorite player, Tom Brady, still playing at age 43.

It's clearly true though that number 9s have to be protected more than others from the physical load on their bodies. Rooney, Fernando Torres, Michael Owen were all basically finished before they were 30. Yes they started earlier than Kane, but they were also at clubs that had another striker so they didn't have to play every minute of every game like Kane does.

If the country wants Kane to be fit and firing for the Euros, is it really worth playing him in what is ultimately a totally meaningless game after just missing a few days training with a 'fatigued muscle' ?

Or would it just be better for him to rest?

That's the thing though, it might be a meaningless game to you and a lot of other people, but Southgate see's the Nations League as a competition that we can win and a chance to pick up our first trophy since 1966 to help build a winning mentality.
For what it's worth I can't see Southgate risking him if the England medical team have any doubts about his fitness.

According to the Guardian article posted on the previous page Jose himself is concerned:

"José Mourinho is strongly against Gareth Southgate’s plan to start Harry Kane for England in the Nations League tie with Denmark on Wednesday night and has communicated his concerns to the national setup."

Whether you want to believe press articles is up to you. Obviously pinch of salt required. However given Harry's injury history recently I don't blame fans or indeed the Tottenham coaching staff for wanting to be cautious.

I can understand it too, but if this wasn't an International break and we had a game tonight would Jose play him? We saw what he was like in the Amazon documentary pushing the Drs to get the players fit.

it would be our decision and the risk is borne by us. kane is contracted to spurs and his salaries are paid by spurs. how come we do not have the say on handling the fitness of kane, especially with his injury records.

England might be the only country that takes the Nations League seriously. Almost everywhere else it's considered a glorified series of meaningless friendlies.
Just veto Harry's participation v Denmark and get him back so Spurs. This is a disaster waiting to happen.

You lot want to build a winning mentality at the club but don't like when England take a competition seriously? Do you not see how backwards that actually is? You win every game you can. Winning breeds confidence. That confidence then goes into the Euros.

Kane is England captain and someone who takes pride in both club and country shirts. I'm sure if he starts tomorrow it won't be the full 90. He's older and wiser. He isn't stupid. This agenda against Southgate needs to end as well. Every manager would want their best players to play as much as possible, because you then have a higher chance of winning. Beat Denmark and then all that's needed basically is a win at home v Iceland. Anything in Belgium is a bonus.

I must be the only one who sees nothing in this media frenzy. He looked fine v Belgium. There was no 'injury'. There will be no traveling due to it being at Wembley. He'll be fine.

I’ll ignore the aspect of trying to pretend international football doesn’t or shouldnt exist, as its obviously something some fans believe and is their personal view, but is there anything to suggest we don’t have a say? He didn’t play against Wales, he only played 20 mins against Belgium, we don’t even know what is happening tomorrow yet. Jose is obviously going to take a different view to Southgate, but that doesn’t mean our opinion is ignored

Nah. Winning the league is winning. Winning the Champions League is winning. Winning the Nations Cup is wasting your time. Just. Don't. Care. Keep Harry safe, we need him scoring goals. That's what matters.

I don't care about England but I do care about Spurs so I want what is best for our club and that is a fit and firing Kane.

All the best teams over the years have pulled their top players out over "niggles", only to be fit come the weekend. I don't see why, if we want to get there, it's a big issue if we begin to do it. It's like we were too nice. But nice guys, they never win.

I really think the media are making something out of nothing.
It does smell of José vs Gary quick make up a drama based around a loose set of quotes and we can sell more budgie cage liner/get clicks!

I obviously think if Kane's genuinely nursing a niggle then he shouldn't be risked in this (if it was a proper crunch Euro or WC qualifier fixture then maybe if the risk's minimal as I'd understand Harry wanting to play)

TBH I'd say the above about any player of any team.

Harry gives a shit about his national team and it's something he's proud of and takes seriously (fuck knows why sometimes given the hate he gets) so I fully understand him wanting to play all the time, I just hope he realises that his injury last season was a warning that should be heeded not just by Spurs and England but Harry too.

Because whilst he is on international duty he is basically not our player whatsoever.
During the international breaks we basically have zero say on him, and that is written into all players contracts, which the FA then ratify, and they will only ratify with that clause in it. For the 10 days he is away he is not a Tottenham player in any way shape or form, but an England player, and they pay us for his service and insure him.

I am pretty sure Harry Kane takes it very seriously. He is captain of his country and wants to play as many games and score as many goals as possible for England. He also wants to win the Nations League. If we didn't have Son, Bale and Vinicius all kicking back at our training ground right now I might feel differently, but we do. So chill out and cheer Kane on as he tries to break Rooney's England scoring record.

What you think of it is irrelevant, what Harry thinks of it matters.

I personally believe that Harry cares more about breaking Rooney’s goal scoring record than winning the Nation’s cup. After all, he has already won the Audi cup with Spurs last summer....:sneaky:
