the sad reality is kicking in.... we are no longer an attractive proposition. We are back to only having the pull to bring in players the top 4/5 dont want ..... and its infuriating and upsetting at the same time

Dunno how this thread has 23 pages. We’ve been linked by a few shite Spanish outlets and 1/2 times by Dragon but no disrespect to Dragon he’s linked us to fucking everyone. We’re clearly not getting him nor properly pursuing him.

I’m not going to pretend like I know the inner workings of our club, but if there is anything within Levy’s power that could have been done to move some of these players that have absolutely no future with our club on that we just let fester, then he deserves some blame. Especially if these sales are preventing us from being able to make a move for a player like Reguilon, which in turns improves our squad. In the end, if Reguilon wants a move to United, that’s all well and good, but it just feels like we are perpetually hampered by our inability to move on players. “It takes two to tango” is very much a reality in the transfer market, but sometimes it just feels like our valuations for our shitty players is completely delusional.

I don’t think we were ever really interested. Jose has stated he has happy with our Left back options and we don’t have any non-homegrown spaces in the squad. Striker is obviously a priority right now.

If we are counting coins for the next year or two I am sorry but this signing does not make sense. There are other priorities. And with four left backs on the book I think this is difficult to justify.

When were we not that then? Within the last thirty years?

The most sad part is that when we were a shit hot destination in summer 2018, we got absolutely no one in.
No one to walk in the footsteps of Dembele, Verts, Walker, Rose or Eriksen...

The problem with our current LB options:
- Davies: Not what you’d ideally want your modern fullback to be - he’s solid, but his lack of pace kills us (offensively and defensively). Because he can’t beat a man, we are forced to continuously play down the right hand side - which is predictable and leaves us lop sided. Opposition full backs can also press forward, knowing that Davies doesn’t have the pace to get in behind.
- Sess: Undoubtedly has potential, but too timid for me. Also feel that Jose sees him as a winger, although over time you’d imagine a Rose style transition to LWB.
- Rose: Unfortunately as good as he once was, injuries have killed him. He was at fault for a fair amount of goals when he played last season, and it’s in the best interest of both parties to move him on.
- Cirkin: Too green, and an unknown quantity in the PL (admittedly I’ve seen very little of him).

For these aforementioned reasons, I was excited about this link - if he goes to Utd, my assumption is that it will be another one that we look at in a few and think “what if” (obviously, this assumes he has interest in joining us and/or a deal being able to be agreed with Madrid).

Saying all of that, I think if we are on a tight budget then we may see other positions as a priority (ie I would be fine with Davies at LB for a year if we signed a striker/ number 10).

Yeah I agree. Man U seemed to be the only serious destination, although now I see he might stay and fight for his place at Madrid.

Seems almost certainly Utd bound but if we did sign him would that see us shift to a more balanced 3ATB system?

I've been thinking that would be quite a good move for our squad. I feel like our CBs will benefit from being in a 3 and it also suits our more aggressive DM choice in Hojbjerg over a traditional pivot. Personally I think Jose's current system is hurting us offensively (too predictable) and defensively (too much space behind Doherty and in front of Davies). Worried it's Jose's equivalent of the diamond and the players just aren't picking it up.

Our winning run at the end of last season coincided with us playing with a more traditional back 4 with Aurier being less gung ho, aside from the start of Jose's tenure I don't think the formation has really worked. I get the concept but it seems to be too easily countered, Carlo had a field day.

I don't think Arteta for example envisioned playing 3ATB but it covers the weaknesses of his team well and is a simple system to understand. You can mix it up easily between 2 up and 3 in midfield or 1 up and two wider player like the other lot do.

Here's an example https://www.buildlineup.com/shared/5f607aa9573afb0547a7ca4e

I agree the lopsided fullback tactic is too one-dimensional and hurts us because it's predictable. However I don't think it's going to change anytime soon as it's part of his philosophy. He played a similar tactic and man u and has spoken about the strengths of playing that way in punditry.

Let's hope the players figure it out soon then because right now it looks like a hindrance to us more than anything.

Yep we had two windows when we should have been pulling in some quality to keep up our momentum and we blew it.

Best position we’ve been in since I’ve been supporting them and a home grown world class centre forward and we can’t manage our player resources properly.

United move is apparently being held up by the buy back clause RM want. Just get him in on loan with an option and kick that can down the road ?

I think this is all in all, very unlikely - we need a lot to happen if we're to get near a deal for him, especially with other clubs sniffing around.

But oddly, signing someone like Regulion really appeals to me, i'd love this to happen. I think we sorely lack some balance and attacking intent from the left side and that balance and ability to overload isn't just an attacking asset, it's a defensive one too.
