I can think of another big number 5 who was visibly devastated at being subbed off early in a big FA Cup tie. He came back well...

For myself and my fellow kids, who are you talking about? I assume not Bentley...

Just back from persistent knee injury. Lacking pace and touch. Hooked after an hour of the final (in the days of a single sub). Trudged to the dressing room in tears. Back in the starting line up four days later and (still)... the rest is history.

New quotes from his agent today. Nothing agreed, he has free transfer offers but it seems he wants to stay with us. All up in the air at the moment.

I reckon we should offer him a 2 year contract. Would probably have to be a bit of a pay cut to justify his decreasing amount of minutes but given the shit he's stayed with us through and the chances he's given us, I think it's only fair we give him the same chance. Also, no matter what he seems like an excellent influence in the dressing room and with the number of young CB's we've got that could be especially important. It's also entirely possible he still has the potential for some quality games with us, he was excellent last season and everyone in the squad has struggled at points this season. His versatility is another big plus.

The situation is extremely sad. I almost shed a tear when I saw those images the other night. I think it's pretty clear that his attitude hasn't been the problem this season because nobody who doesn't care shows that sort of emotion. I think his body is failing him, he knows it and now it's probably affecting his confidence. I just hope that once he comes to terms with the fact his legs have gone then he may be able to adapt and be of some use so all is not lost just yet. We're not talking about a 35 year old.

But unless his performances improve, then head over heart it is the right decision to let him go. Hopefully back to Ajax or for a new challenge where he can get himself a decent pay packet for his final years.

Really hope we can pick up a trophy this season, for him more than anyone and let the bloke lift it for his outstanding service to the club. Come on boys do it for Jan.

The agent (and friend) of Jan Vertonghen, Tom De Mul has been speaking about Jan following many fans expressing concerns for him after his reaction to his substitution on Wednesday night.

“He’s feeling better now. His reaction had nothing to do with his future. He was just disappointed when he got subbed off. Unhappy about his performance and the team’s performance in the first hour.”

“Jan still wants to achieve great things with Spurs. He wants to qualify for the Europa or Champions League, to win the FA Cup. He is 32, but still very ambitious. He is focused. He still has so many targets. The Euros are a super important goal too.”

“It’s what I admire in Jan. He wants to play at the top level as long as possible. He is very still hungry. Vertonghen is known as a perfectionist. Somebody who is committed. An open book. He can’t hide his emotions when things are not going his way. It’s his body language - there have been similar situations before. That just him.”

“Jan is still super happy at Spurs and loves London. He is still very committed. There’s a lot of respect for Tottenham, just like there is a lot of respect from the club towards us. That’s logical after 8 seasons. There is a connection.”

“Currently there are no talks over a new deal - his contract is expiring. “We haven’t reached an agreement as yet, but we don’t rule out anything. There’s interest in him as a free agent, but Spurs is a very interesting option for us. The door’s still open”

Refreshing coming from an agent. Would love to see him extend and hopefully win something with us.

I agree. I don’t think he’s finished here at all. Playing him at LB on and off for the first third of the season has left him shattered. He’s not a regular LB even though he excelled for us there just last year. His confidence probably took a massive beating when the likes of Traore were walking past him.

He would still be a brilliant squad player for us next year onwards in a CB position, if he’s happy to be a squad player. Either way, the reaction he’s had from fans has been really refreshing and I hope (for once) that he reads forums because he’ll know how much he’s loved. Definitely agree with a massive chorus of super Jan next game.

Hopefully a bit of time on the training field working on his positioning and more mental/strength based CB skills and he will be able to adapt to a different role this and next season.

Give him a 1 year deal and get him involved with coaching the youth defenders. Between him and Ledley they’ll learn a huge amount.

Sadly Jan looked a spent force against Southampton. It was as if he was running in treacle. I wonder if Poch's intense training methods for the high press have taken their toll and knackered him (and others) earlier in his career than would be expected.
His partnership with Toby will go down in history as one of the best ever seen at Spurs (or indeed, the premier league) but I think sadly we are watching its demise as the season progresses.

Another thing I found sad was the clear difference between Jan and Toby. Toby read the game better, covered better, defended better and moved faster. I'd love to see Jan playing as he did a couple of seasons ago. As you say, his partnership with Toby was amazing.

There's no doubt in my mind Jan can come back from this and remain an important player for us. The only question is: will Mou let him?

I'm fully on board with whatever Mou has planned (even if it means letting go my favorite players), but I do find it interesting how players like Jan and Dele are reacting whenever they are being subbed rather earlier. Maybe Mou has let the players know that they all are playing for their futures at Spurs and, whenver they get subbed, they see it as a very bad sign. I dunno, it's just a hypotheses.

It's just disappointment in being brought off mate, nothing more than that. Dele has been hooked off early a few times now, it's not stopped him starting in the next game. It might be different for Jan we will have to see, as his age and fitness levels are not on his side like they are with Dele.

It's about what's in the best interest of the team and for too long players have been afforded almost bullet proof status for who they are and not how they've been performing, and it's good to see a manager proactively changing things early during a game in order to change performance as a whole.

Sad to see the fall from grace, but he simply can't play in this side anymore. Shocking yet again. Looks as if his legs have gone AND he's totally devoid of confidence. Looked like a freight truck trying to turn around and catch Mount.

He seemed to give the ball away unnecessarily a lot as well.

Between him and Davies every bloody pass either went sideways, backwards or straight out of play.
Yet everyone wants to try to convince me how good Davies is every time he’s about to come back from injury. Bang fucking average.
