Just watched the little two minute Twitter club video of Alderweireld's reaction to signing a new contract. He's wearing a jacket and shirt with no tie (all fine so far)... and the shirt buttons done up right to the collar! :wtf: I know he's only just signed the contract, but maybe we should be looking to move him on after all.
So WTF is wrong with that? Eh?

[as i swiftly undid the top button of my shirt and checked to make sure that no one had snuck any ties onto my shelf]

It goes with the beard, ink, haircut and general Shoreditch look.

Not overly enamoured by this tbh.

Edit: To add some depth to that statement, we've had two/three years of this contract saga where its obvious the goal for him/his people have been the contract running down (and either using the low fee clause or it terminating) and increasing control of being able to move on to bigger things or a bumper payday. Injuries and whatnot have disrupted that along the way and for whatever reason it hasn't happened. To me it now looks like a player out of options, turned 30 and not as good as he was (lets be honest) and declining, and deciding this is the best gig he can get.

Yeah he's still a decent PL centre back and it's good to have one signed up, but forgive me if it leaves a bit of a sour taste.

Can definitely see where you are coming from. I do think his exemplary attitude and commitment throughout (externally on and off the pitch) does mitigate this a little. Different to if Eriksen signed a new deal today for example. From a club perspective we've retained an asset that would have cost a lot of money to replace, and one the manager clearly wants. Hopefully whatever system (and 'defensive process') Jose finally settles on will give him a new lease of life.

I can understand the sentiment behind this but I disagree.

I never really had a sour taste in my mouth because I can understand someone wanting to maximize their negotiating position - even if it takes them elsewhere. I can't really hold that against them especially when your career is relatively short in this business.

The thing that also helped was the stark contrast between Alderweireld and Eriksen. Both seemed like they wanted away but one never left me questioning whether they were actually giving it their all when selected to play.

After what he did a few years ago? Really, Daniel?!?!? Also, Toby has regressed alot the last year. Not impressed with this. Sorry. I like Toby but this is a mistake.

Vertonghen next please.
Verts is a tough one.

If it's true about his lack of professionalism towards fitness and conditioning at the beginning of the season then it's very hard for the club to sanction giving a 33 year old anything more than a 1 year contract.

Jan is 2 years old than Toby, better than Toby and has been with the club longer than Toby
