I am speculating, but there may have been a negotiation of contract length v. salary. When Alderweireld started being resistant about signing a new deal, the £25m escape clause was in place and he was under 30. Now we've had the £25m summer and no one took the bait - and he's over 30. At that point, job security starts to look more attractive than a higher salary.
