Poch has been fantastic for us on and off the pitch a perfect representation of the class of our great club but he’s yet again come out today saying one day he would be open to manage Real Madrid, Argentina, Espanyol etc fine he may well do but unless he’s planning on leaving very soon why does he keep saying this as it’s starting to leave a bit of a sour taste to be honest!
How about just saying I’m contracted to Tottenham and excited about trying to finally win something next season in the new chapter. Stop flirting with the media about leaving or other clubs you may in the future wish to manage, it’s getting Annoying now.
But this begs the question what do you think is the best approach with these leading questions and the media in general and has it changed now compared to say when Fergie was in charge.
Ferguson and Jose were absolute masters at handling the media. Fergie was strong but did well to portray the confidence he has in the club and his players and to subtly influence the officials and to put pressure on the competition e.g. when Keegan had a breakdown and blew the title lol, same with Benetiz vs Fergie & Jose.
Jose back in the day was a master at making it all about him so there was 0 pressure on his players, he also knew how to wind others up which essentially shifted them from being 100% focused and made them doubt themselves.
The media especially now is a very powerful tool in creating positive or negative emotions in players, fans, officials etc.
So that brings me back to our beloved Poch, he usually just says prettt stock or unrelated generic answers to most questions which are fairly boring but not controversial so just keeps the status quo feeling e.g. “I don’t talk about rumours” or when analysing a game “I think we dominate and play a good game”, however when it comes to his future why does he insist on playing games with the media as I think ultimately it will start to frustrate us as fans that he’s not just saying he’s 100% committed, just like erisken has now come out and said he’s open to a new challenge, if he doesn’t now get his move to Real Madrid he’s going to look a bit stupid and fans may not back him quite 100%.
One thing Poch has done superbly through the media is to bring the gas and players closer together and also to slowly change the perception people have of Tottenham, we really aren’t spurs anymore, of course good results on the pitch are a huge part of that as are our improved training ground and stadium but it’s also been helped by how poch talks about us and our ambition and project etc.
Do you think poch handles the media well, what is his strategy? Where could he improve?
