This seems to be missed by a lot of folks. Goes for other positions as well. It's all good going for an exciting up-and-coming young midfielder, but if he wants a guaranteed starting spot then it's simply never going to happen - Poch doesn't play that game.

I think this argument can be a little over-stated.

99.9% of professional footballers aren't guaranteed a starting spot; it's not how the modern game works.

The likelihood of playing week-in and week-out is a consideration for a young player, but it's not the be-all and end-all.

If we wanted James Maddison, for instance, we could have got him. We may have had to add £15k to £20k to his weekly wages, as he wasn't certain of a starting position, but we still would have been an attractive club for him (i.e. Top 4 club, CL, world-class facilities, great players, etc).

Hate to say it, but the reason players won't sign for us (other than money) is our prestige as a club. Unfortunately, while we can't offer certain players that sort of prestige, clubs that are interested in poch (united and Madrid) can. Difficult decision for Poch in the summer, couldnt really blame if he wanted to look elsewhile

now im not one to back levy, but going off the latest itk, does anyone think it may be poch thats hindering the signings? he has to realize we aren't in the upper echelons of clubs to get the top top players, he has to drop his stance a bit surely. plan a not available cos lets say a barca are after him.... no one will choose spurs over barca and he needs to realize that, and stop with the stubborn streak he clearly has. the squad was threadbare before yesterday. now weve lost dele, surely we have to see minimum of 1 coming in?

And maybe the leak was from within the club to create this doubt. I can't believe for a minute that there are no players out there that Poch would ok and are gettable.

You know, it is quite possible that, rather than a deliberately misleading leak that leads to nowhere and achieves nothing for anyone, the ITK isn’t 100% accurate.

Give youth a chance!

Ferguson's best team was spawned that way.

It's satisfying and more stable.
It’s also a massive myth that Fergie’s best teams were spawned from prioritising youth. Yes he did regularly bring players through but they were usually players like O’Shea or Brown. Who by themselves weren’t world beaters but instead provided the gel for his teams. The way they won all their titles was using the BM strategy of buying the best players from emerging rivals to sprinkle through their team.

All transfer strategies require a balance. Yes we do need to promote players and not buy average gap fillers but that is vastly different from saying we will only settle for players just about to become World beaters. I’m sure there is lots going on at the club, but we really could do with occasionally taking the pragmatic view that if someone is seen as being worth a £100 million gamble all in, paying £110 million to ensure you get them is worth it sometimes.

Seeing the most recent ITK I can’t help but think we are afar away from taking that pragmatic view

January has become a more difficult window for us simply because the quality we need is much higher. To improve what we have requires a top player and teams don't like to let that quality go mid season. There are times when a top player becomes available so Ali Z is not saying for certain nothing will happen. It's just not likely.

I'm not too fussed if we sign nobody this window if it means we get someone better in the summer. I believe this team is good enough to finish top 4 as it is. I think the title is out of reach anyway now. Next season if we're to challenge for the title we really do need signings though.

Giving youth a chance didn't stop Ferguson signing Stam, Cole, Sheringham, Schmeichel, Johnsen, Yorke, Solskjaer, Keane and Cantona to complement his talented youths...

Agreed, the problem is, if what Ali Z is true and we don't sign anyone until August then it means we'll have signed one player in two years.

Assuming the likes of Wanyama, Llorente, Nkoudou, Janssen, Vorm all leave, along with possibly Eriksen if his contract isn't sorted, and bear in mind we've already lost Dembele, that's some pretty wholesale change to manage there.

Not ideal to bring loads of players in at once as they need time to gel, and if we struggle yet again to ship players out in summer while Levy haggles over spare change and pisses everyone off, it doesn't inspire a lot of confidence for next season.
