He did? I could have sworn he played Poor Blobby (Sorry! Poor Bobby!) and Ade together, and then Ade and Kane. But I could be wrong!
Not all the time they didn't, I though Kane played the last 3 games and Soldao was dropped a month or so before that IIRC.

You was impressed with Townsend? I've heard enough! Goodnight....
I was impressed in that he actually passed rather than shoot all the time: I was starting from a very low base. Was your assessment based purely on his performance tonight or was it biased by his previous play?

Along with everyone else I was very disappointed by tonights display. That said I think there were one or two bright spots. First, Walker came back and was subbed before he got injured or did himself one. Second, there were signs of the Dembele that played at Fulham and the guy we thought we bought, although when the pace quicken he struggled to keep up.

In mitigation for the team that pitch was awful and the ball was very slow across so I suspect the grass was left to grow. Now it's all very well saying that they should adapt and that's why they are allowed to train on it. But they only had a short training session yesterday because their kit vehicle got stuck in traffic. I lost count of the times when the ball bobbled up mid-pass or when a pass was being made. Besiktas use the pitch all the time they are used to it.

The downside was that there seemed to be a lack of real drive in the side. They knew they had qualified and if they lost they were still through. In fact in another thread someone on here said that they thought losing tonight would mean that the draw would be more favourable in terms of the CL reject we were likely to play!

I'm not sure what I'm getting at here, I am very disappointed we lost, but there were no bad injuries, Walker is making his way back to fitness and Poch has a better idea of who he can sell in January. The sooner it comes the better!

They picked pooch to play a 4-2-3-1 formation, IMO, it is why he got the job, but then the committe went out and got players more suited to any formation other than 4-2-3-1...

Why did AVB never play his famed 4-3-3, despite having a squad more suited to that formation?

Why did TS, play 4-2-3-1?

I think the club decided to play 4-2-3-1, got Pooch in as the coach to teach the players to play 4-2-3-1 and that ain't never going to happen.
Tim sherwood initially played 433 alot as well

HAHAHA!!

Completely missed the point....

We could have started

Soldado ---------- Young striker

Townsend ----- Dembele ----- Stambouli ----- Lennon

Rose -------- Vlad --------- Kaboul -------- Walker

Vorm
There you go, it's that fucking simple, that simple... It really was... Much much more balanced and suited to the player we had at our disposal.

..,,have we actually started a game with Lennon on the right and Townsend on the left? ... Tell them to run fast and cross for our two strikers? .. I'd love to see if that would work.

A good manager has plan a and plan b.. even luis enrique, didn't use the sacred 4-3-3 vs psg. I was 3-6-1 with suarez drifting and messi In a free role.

Sherwood managed to win a lot of games with this squad. Trouble is, we've got horrid horrid fans who drove him out.

Sherwood managed to win games mostly through individual moments from players better than the opposition and by having Adebayor have his annual 10-15 game purple patch coincide with the start of his tenure. In an awful lot of games had our opponents had better finishers (Palace at home being the most obvious example, they should have been out of sight at half time) they would have won or at least drawn.

And don't kid yourself that the fans had anything to do with his sacking. The only person who got Tim Sherwood sacked was Tim Sherwood.

... I'm not a fan of sherwood but I can recognise one thing about him with our players. The current crop respond to a manager who can relate to the team, joke with them, arm round the shoulder etc...most of our team lack the intelligence to buy into a system ...Benitez or (FDB) now ..this season is going to get much worse.

Think Sherwood made Adebayor feel as if he was the main man, brought Eriksen into the team (if you lookat his stats he was a bit part player under AVB) who provided a lot of assisys and married Adebayor with Soldado, probably to try to get Soldado to start scoring - and when that didn't work drop Soldado for Kane for the last 7 matches where Kane scored 3 goals.

So Sherwood put together an attacking force to score goals - which it did - without much training/preparation time. Would have needed a pre-season with the players to have got much more out of them - but his interviews made that unlikely to happen

We are now in a situation were we could quite easily sell off at least half the squad and nobody would be missed. Often I hear pundits hail our vast, talented squad but in actual fact having a big squad has done nothing for us. I think that's partly down to the poor use of squad rotation but primarily because the wrong players were bought and too much money was flippantly spent. We have spent huge amounts on numerous players but realistically who was the last great outfield first team buy? Eriksen looks to have potential and I would say the same for Lamela but both are young and could go ether way. Jan is a very good defender but he is no superstar, realistically we are looking at the likes of Modric, Bale, VDV with VDV and Moders being the more established players at the time of purchase. That is absolutely shocking when you think about the amount of money spent and the number of players brought in since then. But the fact of the matter is our problem is not down to any one player but the team set up itself. We should have bought 2 maybe three players max with the Bale money not 8. Spend the same amount but on fewer high quality players and use the youth squad to pack out the team were necessary. Now, according to ITK this is the plan going forward but in reality who on earth is going to spend anything on the players we have and who in their right mind would want to come to us... At least nobody of real quality. When we sold Bale, even though we had just lost our best player we were still in a vey attractive position, we had just had a good campaign and players could see we wanted to push for the top. Now we are struggling against bad teams and realistically sitting mid table is a little flattering. All of this means that we have to continue how we started, looking for overlooked or young talent and hope they turn into superstars as Levy will never fork out the required wages for us to compete for a truly special player (even if we somehow found a deluded enough player to join our merry gang). It can be done, but with our scouting network I'm just not so sure.

VDV was an established player, but unwanted by RM which is why we got him. Modric was a player which bigger clubs had looked at but didn't think he was suited to PL, so we bought him but it was only after 18 months he looked a decent player.

We've bought Soldado, Paulhino, Dembele, and Lamela (priced on scoring zillions of goals at Roma) as established players and paid big sums - but all have yet to preform at a level we might have expected for the price.

We've also bought a number of lower priced players such as Capoue, Chirches but none of these have kicked on on to be better players, in fact if anything they seem to have regressed.

All of which is why many suggest we have a large squad of players of similar average ability - supplemented by a few decent youth club produced players. So the only way out is to sell a few of our underperforming players and buy players who may kick on like Beerbatov, Modric, Bale etc plus bring through more youth players who will be no worse than our squad players and may well develop to be better players - but importantly play for the shirt unlike some of our current squad players.

Horrible game.
Way things are with Soldado, I am now praying for Adebayor to get his mind right & come back. At this rate, I would think twice about having Soldado in match day squad.

Kick in the teeth for everyone who is still backing him.

Townsend - get out of the club. Period.

Only positive to come out of the game is Walker. He didnt lose an of his pace, looks fit & confident. Now only a matter of time to starting him in XI.

Another game, where Lamela made outstanding contribution. :banghead:

Eriksen wasn't a bit part player under AVB. He was injured on international duty and out for a couple of months and didn't return until after AVB had gone. Sherwood dropped Soldado as soon as he scored.

I've had a ponder and I have a conclusion/observation...
Levy may well be right! (Even I gulped at that thought)
But how can one club with so many proven (before Spurs ruined them) internationals have such a mediocre team?!
Players that have reached international level are, by definition, the best of their peers.
We must have 18 in our squad and yet they all become shit under the Spurs cockerel....Verts, Capoue, Soldado, Chicriches, Paulhino (once hailed the next best thing t come from Brazil - with a subsequent Brazillian press article venting "what have you done to him?!"), Stambouli, Dembele, Chadli, Lamela, Rose (a bad joke, but true, player of the season at Sunderland and with England caps)...all of them - simply mediocre now. Erikson - the stand out, but still played out of position etc etc...
Where can the blame lay?
It's not rocket science, and I'll cry it til my dying day - play your best players in their best positions and build a team that way - if you're missing a piece of that jigsaw....buy that piece - don't buy 6 number 10s.
Neither MoPo or AVB and their "continental one off seasons" can veer from their blinkered Inflexible systems - and frankly it is shit, shit to watch, shit to behold and shit that we are still having to witness it week in week out.
international players don't become shit over night - unless they move to Spurs - and that is A pretty fucking damning reflection and a sad reality of where we currently reside.
Mason, Lloris and Kane being the stand outs for the season?!
I wish I had the answer - but I'm pretty sure MoPo doesn't either.

Excellent post. I agree with every word you wrote except the one in bold; that one you could just leave out.
