I'm not saying he should be slated because he had a fairly good day at the office otherwise, but Soldado's penalty miss can't be overlooked, just like Defoe's miss at the same ground in 2012 can't be overlooked. It's in big moments like these that we always, always seem to let ourselves down, and the sides that we aspire to compete with wouldn't analyse Soldado's performance as "very decent, just unlucky with the penalty", they'd be saying that the miss turned the game and cost them the draw.

It happens to be Soldado today, but he's not alone: we've got too many players who just can't step up to the plate at the big moments. Van der Vaart had it, Bale had it, but I'm not sure there's anyone in our squad (Lloris aside, but his work is done at the other end of the field) who has that big game mentality that has troubled us so much in the last 2-and-a-bit seasons.

Away against the champions and Mason was superb. Great reading of the game and tackle for our goal. Also unlucky not to score a couple of times. Having a performance like that after only a handful of PL games, credit to himself.

Lloris MOTM and our only player good enough to start for City. Eriksen and Chadli were ok but Lamela was all flounce and no pounce -- what are we going to do with the boy? Soldado competent but unconfident and things just aren't going his way -- think he needs to move on for everyone's sake. CMs did OK against superior opposition. Defence was rather poor, albeit that they were up against some top attackers. They just weren't in the right place and weren't covering for each other. Low marks for Pochettino too, for starting an untested CB pairing in such a big game and for not making bolder substitutions when we were up against it. I liked the application of the players though -- at least we tried.

Kaboul: 6
Fazio: 6
Rose: 7

Capoue: 7
Mason: 7.5

Lamela: 5
Eriksen: 9
Chadli: 6

Soldado: 7 for buildup and overall play but the penalty miss and the other miss brings him down to 5.

Townsend looked good when he came on, I was impressed with him.

4-1 flatters City a bit I think, and until the red card and 3-1 I thought we played very well and we could easily have walked away with a draw today with a better ref and some luck.

Kaboul and Fazio have had better games, although I think the red card was very harsh.

MOM Lloris, also an encouraging perfomance from Soldado who offered more this game alone than Adebayor has done in his last three or four games against weaker opposition. Yes, Hart saved the penalty but at least Roberto hit the target. I'd argue that Agüeros penalty miss was much worse, but of course if Soldado had scored the game would probably have looked much different.

Kane, who is actually on good form and actually is a football (can be inportant when playing football) would've made more sense.
I think you might be getting Kane confused with the Caine in 'Kung Fu' - "Be the ball, Grasshopper".

Scoreline flattered them Some bad decisions spoilt the game
Encouraged by effort, we gave them a game away from home.
Hoped for a better performance and an improved scoreline. Got both.

Lloris...........8.....French flair and the missis thinks he's handsome. Bastard.
Dier.............6+... Playing well considering he's out of position.
Fazio...........5.....Stupid foul. Not quite at the races. Wish he had been.
Kaboul........5+...Captain are you sleeping down below. Seems to be getting fitter and slower.
Rose...........6+..The old Danny lurks just below the surface.
Capoue.......5.....Had his boozle well bammed today. Bit dilatory as my reports used to say.
Mason.........8....Close call for MOM. Another strong performance. Didn't he know who they were?
Lamela........6+...Some good play but another in the dilatory camp. Had a hand in both their early goals.
Erikson........8+...Good performance, workrate, passing, scoring. Like the boy.
Chadli..........6.....Not at the races with Fazio. Flickering presence.
Soldado.......7.....I like this boy too but should have scored a couple. Good assist and general play.

Mauricio.......7+..Had a go, brought the right people off but Fazio should not have started. Like his attitude.

Could stand more of this kind of approach. Good game we were unlucky. Not one of my away bankers to be honest

Positives

- Creating lots of chances against good sides.
- Ryan Mason, consistently good against top level opposition.
- Soldado, most threatening he's looked in a year.
- Unlikely we'll be missing 4 RBs again, 2 injured and 2 on loan. Balance can only get better.

Negatives

- Space left behind our full backs, constantly exploited.
- Still giving the ball away cheaply in transition.
- Lack of composure and cohesion at CB.
- Lack of balance down our right side.
- Assume MP picked Fazio to stop Dzeko, who didn't start.

Harsh score line. First goal Lampard clearly offside. Second goal never a penalty. Soldado should've scored his penalty. Red card totally over the top. Awful ref. We had enough chances. Narrow defeat would've been fair. 2-1 or 3-2.

Lloris was pretty superb, nobody could have prevented any of the goals.

Dier was generally solid but for one moment. Offered nothing going forward but he is a center back. Considering how good the opposition were, he was fine.

Fazio probably shouldn't have made his debut today and he made a few mistakes but was by no means awful. Silly tug for the penalty but never deserved a red.

Kaboul gave away a stupid penalty and really never got close to Aguero, though not many do.

Rose was very good. He had one casual moment early on but otherwise looked positive in both directions.

Capoue was dreadful. Way too casual way too often. Needs to remember he's not in Ligue 1.

Mason was easily our best outfield player and should start next week too. Good passing, lots of work off the ball, great runs when joining the attack. This is him after 3 games, I can't wait to see him after 30!

Lamela had a bad game. Yes, the first goal should've been offside and the second was never a penalty, but it was his involvement both times. Shame, he did start brightly, and he was involved, but nothing came off for him.

Eriksen was good, he dribbled well, linked well with Soldado, scored a good goal and found himself in dangerous areas constantly.

Chadli had a terrible game. I don't know if he was still injured but I imposed myself more from my sofa than he did on the pitch.

Soldado assisted the goal and played a few other great passes (the one early on for Mason was sensational) and had a great effort from the cross after the penalty miss. However, he did miss the penalty (having won it well) and I have to say, however well he may have played, you expect your centre forward, at 2-1 down, to equalise from the spot when he has such a good penalty record previously and is actually having a good game.

Dembele came on and contributed absolutely nothing, as we've come to expect. Stambouli with his ability to win the ball would've made more sense.

Townsend came on and made the wrong decision every time he had the ball, as we've come to expect. Kane, who is actually on good form and actually is a football (can be inportant when playing football) would've made more sense.

Vertonghen came on to fill in the hole left by the departed Fazio and quite beautifully lay on his arse while guiding Aguero's fourth past our goalie.

This was never a 4-1. I think it's debatable that we even deserved to lose. We had enough good chances, were fine on possession before an incorrect sending off and played good football. However, City had two things we did not. A referee in their pocket (clearly biased all game long), and an on form, world class Aguero. I saw enough to feel confidence for next time.

Was the first goal offside if Lampard doesn't touch the ball? Genuine question on the rules..

Lloris was a joy to watch. Will be off at the end of the season imo.

Centre backs were awful. Carved openot time and time again. Not sure why Fazio was preferred to Vertonghen.

Danny Rose always had 2 on him. Not his fault, just city's flanks were excellent.

Capoue was awful. Correctly subbed, just too slow and no urgency in his play. Offered less protection than Mason.

Mason was excellent first half like. Looks forward. Runs off the ball and gets into good positions. Like him a lot.

Eriksen was okay and better than Lamela but both get pushed off the ball so easily it is frustrating.

Soldado set one up and won a penalty. I like him but I just don't think he is clinical enough.

Chad was meh.

I think we give them a game in places but our woeful defence always looked like it would slip up. That said Aguero is amazing. The best striker in the premiership by a mile. His movement is incredible.

Not a bad display at all but some comical decisions by the referee hindered us and made the scoreline a little flattering for them.

Lloris - 9 He's really living up to his reputation this season. Excellent

Dier - 6 did alright. Did not notice him much

Kaboul - 4 torn apart by aguero a few times. Gave away a pen and caught wandering on the ball, again. He can be pretty good at times but he is always liable to drop at least one clanger a match.

Fazio - 6 did okay for the most part. Shame about the pen

Rose - 5 caught upfield on many occasions

Capoue - 5 worrying that any match played above his comfort level passes him by. Needs to up his urgency as he can be very languid and lethargic

Mason - 9 excellent. First half was a master class despite the miss. Moves the ball forward quickly and accurately, something we have missed since modric

Lamela - 4 one of his biggest fans, but he was very poor today.

Eriksen - 8 best performance of the season so far from him. Played some nice passes, displayed some good technique and dribbling to fashion some space and had a few good shoots including the goal

Chadli - 7 thought he was decent and showed quick feet and good passing

Soldado - 8 if he had scored it would have been probably his best performance with us full stop. He really has great vision and awareness with the ball as he created 2/3 clear cut chances. Probably our most creative passer. If he continues playing with the 3 behind him I'm sure we'll not only score but will do so in style

Not sure what game lot of people were watching but eriksen is not good enough. Too lazy. Wouldn't win a 50 50 ball against a six year old girl. Poor mentality. We are lacking some big players and leaders that will step up when required. Levy and baldini take a lot of the blame for this. I honestly don't know how rose, kaboul, capoue, eriksen, cannot be embarrassed and ashamed when they watch this game back. People work very hard every week to scrape enough to survive and be able to watch their team. For players earning twice an average years salary in one week and they can't be bothered to track back or put in a f++cking challenge is just not good enough. I believe and would love to see players wages be determined by performance rated pay. Not good enough spurs!

Good post. Agreed with every bit of your assessment except when it came to Chadli. I thought he was one of our pluses.

Not sure what game you were watching actually. Eriksen played well.
I agree, I have been very critical of him this season but he turned up and did a good shift today
