Well I'm just going to wait until it's official. Levy/Spurs have shown this window that we're looking to improve the squad and not by chasing Willian or Lamela but by what we've already bought. Players like Soldado, Paulinho and Capoue are quality signings and are a sign of our intention to challenge not just for this season but for the future.

I have more faith in AVB than any other manager we've had since I started supporting this wonderful club. Some might think I'm straw clutching but my proof is in what we have already at the club.

Onwards and upwards..........COYS

Re the ITK about Benoit, just want to say how much his departure will sadden me, he's by far the best left back I've seen at Spurs and while he had his moments, he's been consistently superb since the year we finally qualified for the Champions League. He has been great in both directions for the most part, he had entertained, and he has been honest throughout. Even if he is leaving because he doesn't want to extend (odd thing to discuss when he has three years remaining anyway and is already 29), he will remain one of my favourites and a guy for whom I have the utmost respect. I often here those older than I debate whether he or Knowles has been our greatest left back. The guy has seen off competition from many, he's fought his way back in when he's lost his place or suffered injury, he's been a great professional. Lastly, only cannot underestimate his role in turning Bale into the superstar he has become, their link up from 2012 - 2012 being the best wing understanding in world football.

Farewell Benny, you have been a true Spur and will always be a hero to me.

Cracking post but Chris hughton was better :)

The only problem is that Lamela is a more similar player to Townsend, both left footed pacy, powerful wingers/forwards who cut inside from the right. Willian would have been perfect for the other side as his creativity and skill would have brought something we didn't already have. I'd go as far as saying that if we had managed to get Willian along with Lamela and Coentrao we would have had the best team in the country. Hopefully we know of a player who can be as strong a fit as Willian would have been, only one I can think of is Antoine Griezmann. In fact I watched a youtube video of him earlier and there were comments on it saying "Welcome to Liverpool." You know what to do Daniel and Franco...:sneaky:

yh they both prefer left foot, but Lamela operates from all over the pitch and from what ive seen of him he can do alot of damage from the left hand side, also townsend can also work from the both sides, its lennon who looks out of his depth on the left

but more importantly we need to have options at stages during matches, and to keep players as fresh as possible during the season, i think thats y we are tryn to gather quality players who can operate in several positions.

alot of posters are sayin this player is 1st choice and this player is back up, but other factors will dictate during the season form, fitness and availability, as well as suspensions. avb will rotate and try to establish and solid base of players and playing style. to acheive this he will need to get individuals game time . And establish trust and unity amongst the squad.

Does anyone care that were losing a lot of english players this window? I know we needed to upgrade them positions...but with talk of upgrading rose, lennon and defoe we won't have many left! Recent itk is all about every nationality other than english - is the talent pool in this country really that crap?
The talent pool is crap, yes.

Do I care that we're losing them at this point? No. The idea is to raise our level by whatever means and then I'm sure that in time we will begin to slowly bring through young english talent/young english talent into the team and allow them to develop with amazing players around them.

I think it's rapidly degrading. Not in terms of raw quality and talent, because that is probably always going to be constant in a country so consumed by football, but mentality wise it seems to be going the wrong way.

I read an interesting piece on Raheem Sterling and how we declined to make an offer of a few 100K for his services before he went to Liverpool, and it said that, although there was no doubting his raw talent, the club felt he does not have the mentality to succeed at the highest level. The latter is obviously up for discussion, as he has done alright for himself at Liverpool, but it's worth mentioning that at his tender age he has been involved with the police more than one time for incidents way more serious than traffic violations, put it that way.

You could say the same for many other young, exciting english prospects. The pursuit of fame, idolization and money rather than self improvement and the drive to succeed at the highest level is probably what is standing in their way.

Fair point, and one that is never really addresses.

This was the case a few years back but I do not know if it still the same, but in Spain, youngsters who signed big money contracts were only paid a small percentage of their wage, Te balance went into trust for when they matured/retired, meaning that they didn't have pots of money to piss up the wall, and make all temptation readily available. They also had mentoring sessions as to what to do with their cash and how o handle the fame.

Youngsters today are suddenly in the spotlight, and with the mentality of the average British Teenager and £50k a week burning a whole in their pocket is a recipe for disaster, hence why so many fall by the wayside.

So what if we have?

Look, Willian not signing is not the club's fault. The club is at fault, again, for selling so late as to make other (worthwhile) targets impractical. Lamela would be a terrific signing, but there is a lot riding on the kid now, not just him signing, but if and when he gets here. What I object to is sunny predictions for 4th, completely out of kilter with the paucity of our attack, and the general attitude that it's ok to sell this late. Again.

Last night we had naughton,Dawson, rose, Townsend, Carroll & Kane on the pitch at the same time, so no

Out of them though...who would really start if the whole team was available to pick from? Rose and Walker are arguably the only two who would definitely start...Townsend based on performance on thurs maybe. Kaboul and Vertonghen edge out dawson for me.

We have a very English bench actually but it just shows how British players aren't as highly thought of anymore.

Obviously I love Spurs and have rose tinted glasses with us but today's thread has made me realise how far behind we actually are from everyone else. Not because of Willian choosing the Chavs (if he does) but the fact we are in possession if one of the best players in the world and almost everyone is saying "he's gone". If we can't get our targets in surely we'll keep him. Are we that far down the food chain that we sell our best players (even if they have 3/4 years left on their contract) to a bigger club just because they want them now?

No player is bigger than the club so the CLUB should decide what suits them best. He's on a bloody contract! It works both ways too, by all accounts we want rid of Ade but he would rather stay and take the money. Both sides know the risks so shouldn't complain when it doesn't always go their way.

Just thinking of some names that Spurs could possibly look at since Willian fell through as back up options...

Eriksen -there has been some ITK about him.
Sanchez from Barca - some thought a cryptic a while ago was about him but nothing since then.
Atsu - has been mentioned before in media
Fischer from Ajax - don't think there has been any ITK
Draxler - most people seem to think this is a pipe dream, some say he has release clause.
Dzagoev and Honda - from Russia, don't remember any ITK
Griezmann - ????
Carrillo - ???? I think he may have been mentioned in a news article.

Any other possibilities people can think of out there that may be relaistic to replace Willian's expected transfer. That's assuming Lamela works out which as of now sounds iffy based on what people here are saying.

IMO. Draxler and Fischer please, 45 mil might do it

You think that we agreed a fee, got him over, put him through a medical, went through terms, then got Chelsea to buy him just so it looked like we tried to get AVB his man ?

Well we couldn't do the paperwork trick as it wasn't deadline day
