From LLM on JA606:

Nobody is in for Huddlestone anymore. I get the feeling he just does not want to move, he has been so close to moving for a few years Fulham, Stoke, Sunderland. He has even toured their training grounds but has just never signed. He is not a mercenary like Bentley though.

Oh there is more to come than just a striker.

He is supposed to be a good trainer and good character believe it or not. I wouldnt be surprised if AVB has given him enough encouragement to stay. He got a fair amount of minutes last season when fit

Good Lord, Huddlestone I really do love you, but it's what is best for his career at this point to move on. He's still young enough to go somewhere and re-establish himself.

No guarantee a lot of players joining will hit the ground running or give CL football, for all the names that worked there's plenty more that didn't, Gilberto, Rocha, Atouba, Davenport, Salty, Boutros Boutros, Bentley, the list can go on. If we get a player that has consistently shown that they can score a decent goal tally season after season and that player can give you that edge to get CL and the resulting revenue then re sale value is not a necessary factor. Besides apart from the possibility that some players bought with the view that they may increase in price may do the reverse there's also always a possibility that the player could walk on a free. The most important reason for buying a player has to be what he can do for the team when he's here rather than worrying about what he might do when he's gone

You're missing the point. What a player can do for the team, and what he can continue to do for this or another team defines his value to this team and any other team.
Talk of resale value is in any event redundant, because of Daniel Levy's hard-nosed attitude to sales, which is apparent to all, but conveniently ignored when describing his attitude to purchases. This "going for a quick profit" myth has been promulgated for well over a decade now, and is wearing rather thin. His predilection for younger talented players is aimed at a progressive improvement of the squad for a number of years, not the quick fix of marquee signings.
We have to deal in the art of the possible. We have in my view done this consistently in the last seven or eight years. Splashing big money on CL players might seem the nirvana we are all seeking, but unless we have a multi-billionaire owner who can ignore basic economics for his plaything, we will never be able to offer enough money to a potential top player to compensate for the lack of CL football. We have to do it the hard way. We are unlikely to get the Higuains or Rooneys because they are setting their sights higher than us. If we have more money available for new players, it will be because of the Sky money increase, not because Joe Lewis is loaning us money ("putting his hand in his pocket"), and we should all be grateful for that for the sake of the continued prosperity of the club. We have to spend our money wisely, on those players likely to turn into the Higuains, Rooneys, Messis and Bales of the next year or two, like we did with the players I mentioned. Yes, we can all point out the purchases which failed, though I'd suggest that some that you mentioned were part of the progress of the club at the time, and were replaced by better, and often younger players. Furthermore I'd suggest that a great many of the purchases you refer to are those of some years ago, and highlight the progress the club has made, by its progressive approach.
The downside though is for those who want it and want it now. That's not the way life works.

All sounds good , but we have been here b4, lets hope we can close the Soldado deal and then tie up 1 or 2 more, would be the making of a fantastic window, might even come close to making up for some of the poorer ones. Get the distinct impression there is a trust in AVB and Baldini that did not exist in previous management teams ?

well there's your answer then.
But they don't have a manager so I don't think anything with transfers and barca is true.

Just like a few days ago, barca said publicly that Fabregas wasn't for sale whilst announcing the Tito stuff. Yet the british press were using the fact someone having cancer to say the chances of Fabregas coming back are high despite it not being true in any sense.

The finance director (collecott) is there.

If that's the case then this must be close. No way we'd have representatives out there without serious indication that a deal can be done. Obviously we've been close to sealing a deal and ended up with nothing before, but we've got almost 1 1/2 month left of the transfer window and Baldini + finance director is in Valencia to sort out the deal. Gut feeling is a big fucking YES on this one and I'm usually extremely pessimistic when it comes to our transfer dealings.

Get it done!
