Also, put me in the "me likey Benteke" camp but would Michu be a possibility if that move goes tits up? Swans seem pretty flush with cash, or at least not in need of selling anyway, but he'd be gettable wouldn't he?

I'm just worried that we're quickly running out of options again, even though it just got into July.

Just spent an hour or so on a villa fansite from an earlier post. They obviously rate him but are a bit confused over his market value. I even saw the words swap and bale in the same sentence (hope it was a joke). Can't be £20m. Not yet.

Actually I've decided that I do want Benteke to sign....just so I can use the term Ben-tekkers whenever he does something non-Defoey.

I know right... They all want £30 million at very minimum; need a dose of reality.

Not totally sold on Benteke, it's hard to judge a player on one season, even if it was on a bad side. Normally a striker will have a decent first season as he is an unknown commodity, it's the second season were you really see if he is any good as teams will know all about him. Plus didn't score any of his goals against Man U, Man City, Arsenal or Spurs home or away and only one against Chelsea. 15 million would be a decent price to start at but not a lot more than that.

To be fair though, Dempsey and Defoe scored against a few of the top teams (don't mean to sound like an arse btw). Surely a player who can batter lesser teams is exactly what we need, as we have done for the past few seasons.

Look for all those saying Benteke is a big lumbering Heskey-esque lump. No he is isn't. He has great pace, and his technique is good, creating 50 chances last season for team-'mates.

For all those saying he is the perfect uber-striker who will guarantee us rising to the next level. No, he has many areas of game to work on. His finishing could be honed, and his link up play also needs to be developed. But that's why we pay our coaching team.

I admit, I once advocated us signing Kenwyne Jones so maybe my opinion is now void but Benteke is a damn sight better than Jones ever was!

Bit like us really, albeit slightly differing amounts. Talk of Bale going for a world record fee. Bit optimistic, imo. We'll still comfortably get north of £50m imo. Depends on various factors. If Bale has another season like his last one, or even improves on it, and is signed on another long-term contract then we'll be looking at something mahoosive.

ITK depresses me sometimes.

I wouldn't get too down about Jasper's ITK, firstly it reads like it is his opinion, secondly his record isn't great. LLM and JJ both haven't said the deal has collapsed yet, so need to panic....... yet

what's the latest on the young croatians? Is that deal still looking likely to happen?
From the ITK it seems to be cooling down. Word on the street is that Halilovic isn't exactly in love with idea of Spurs. Zagreb aren't the problem though.

What a naffin' day. Arguments a plenty and not much positive stuff at all. Maybe a dip back in here a bit later on where the news will ensure my mood swing will take a dramatic upturn perhaps? Come on guys - you can do it (pleads).

No doubting we are in for Benteke- remains to be seen whether we get him.. I can see the scum going hard for him...
Personally, not convinced he is what we need. If we are going to spend big on one striker we need something different. Our squad is shaping up nicely but is built on pace and power. I don't see the guile to unlock a top 4 team away or a park the bus relegation team at the lane. Given Bale, Pauly and others all bringing goals, I just think we need someone with subtlety and guile with his back to goal (as well as a goal threat obviously). Imagine a young Berba in this side??
For that reason I'd go for a Soldado/Negredo type over Benteke.
All will be hard deals and needs DL to splash the cash so will see.

To be honest I don't blame him. If you can't sign on for a year anyway. Why not back his talent and another season under his belt and see who comes a knocking next summer.

Aye, quite sensible in fact. Unless he's in love with a particular club or sold on a club in terms of comfort etc there's no need to commit to anything.

Halilovic's contract will end in january so that's why Dinamo want to sell him now. Same thing with Jedvaj except he wouldn't mind staying in Dinamo for few more years.

I'm actually quite enjoying seeing how varied the opinions are on Benteke. To some he's the next Drogba, to others he is the next Michael Ricketts. Rare for a player to split opinion so much although I'd wager that is because of the fee being talked about rather than the player himself.

I'm yet to decide which side of the fence I'm on. I prefer it if he was cheaper but I think he has more about him that a one season wonder.

What I really want is us to find a sub £10m striker and a gifted creative midfielder with the rest.

Plus it's just funny to get one over on villa fans, who still think they are as big of a club as us. Maybe this could be a song:

To the Addam's family theme song

He's big and he is quick,
He just did another trick
He makes Villa fans feel sick,
He's Christian Ben-te-ke.

He made our offence spark,
And he came from villa park
He's Christian Ben-te-ke.
