Now 2 Newcastle players have come out saying they don't want to wear the kit because of religious beliefs.

Are they using 'religious beliefs' as it has more impact when in fact they really mean 'moral beliefs'?

Why do I say this? Newcastle were previously sponsored by Virgin Money, prior to that - Northern Rock. Both of whom charged interest to people who borrowed money, although at much more reasonable rates.

But - Islamic beliefs do not worry about how high the interest rate is. If there IS an interest rate of any level its frowned upon.

So, are these players just playing the religion card? To be honest, a hell of a lot of clubs sponsors would be frowned upon under Islamic beliefs. Beers, gambling, normal banks etc.

On a second note: I'm off to get myself an islamic mortgage. Interest free :-D

In Islamic banking there is a term called 'riba', which is usually the unfair/unjust fees associated with money over time - ie, high interest rates. Islamic banking tends to charge the customer a fee in lieu of interest.

It may be that, to the players, Virgin Money is a legitimate/established way of finance in the Western world but Wonga and their ilk are immoral (I agree..) and crosses the line of their own religious beliefs and tolerance for the values of others. Like when Bolton fans protested QuikQuid and the club dropped it.

Kanoute had a fall out with Sevilla over their sponsor 888.com, a gambling site, and I am sure some Muslim cricketers (although don't know the names) didn't want to wear a shirt with Castle lager on it. Someone can fill in those gaps for me.

But at the same time they are part of a world where these businesses are normal and operate. High interest payday loans may be their tipping point.

I have a client who is an Islamic bank, had to learn all this stuff within a few weeks... and just opened my own account with a different bank. A very steep learning curve.

People moan about these companies but they won't half start moaning when they are gone.

High interest is a neccessity. Whoin their right mind would want to lend say £200 to get £2.16 profit back a month later? How is that going to pay the firm's wages, advertising and cover defaults? And who is going to do that with people with a poor credit/repayment history? I'd want to charge at least £20+ to make it worth my while which is going to skew the APR, something it was never designed to represent accurately anyway.

Interesting connundrum. Wonga is purely a Loan company compared to others mentioned that are Financial Services. I wonder if a compromise could be reached with the players taking a lower wage to ease their moral concience? Probably not

If you ask me it is a window of opportunity to get transferred out of Newcastle

If people managed their money and were more responsible with it in the first place these companies wouldn't even be in existence...

That may be so but what a dull world it would be if we all thought and behaved in the same way

I don't know how Wonga get away with those adds.
The joke seems to be laugh at old people and they haven't changed their Stuart Hall voice-a-like, it may even be Hall himself yet.

Apparently cisse has said if he gets a wage increase he doesn't mind wearing it!

I would refuse to wear the shirt just because they are always on watchdog treating their customer's like shit

Agree but apparently cisse has asked for raise to wear the shirt so maybe he should practice what he preaches(he made it public, if he was the shirt next season, people will lose respect for him)

What I don't understand is how Cisse didn't mind playing with a Virgin Money shirt on - a company which, unlikely most banks, is funded solely on the payment of interest on loans and credit cards.

Has he found Islam in the last couple of weeks?

if his beleifs are as such should he play in competitons sponsored by booze companies!.. carling, Budweiser, henieken etc etc something his religious beliefs also have a problem with.. I believe he's taking the piss & reading what a few geordies who support the barcodes have commented he was appalling last season & have said elsewhere they'd pay his fare to wherever he like to fuck off to!!.

He had no problem with wearing the Barclays Premier League badge on his shirt. He had no problem wearing the Capital One cup badge. He had no problem wearing a Newcastle shirt with Virgin Money on it. But he has a problem with Wonga? How does he think Capital One, Barclays and Virgin Money make some of their money? I suspect this has less to do with religious beliefs and more to do with getting either a pay rise or a transfer to another club.

So now Joe Kinnear claims he is the new DOF at Newcastle! Strange days up there.

You've got to admire Mike Ashley's commitment (at such personal financial expense) to maintain Newcastle's position as a joke club.

How bad must Pardew's list of potential transfers be in order for the board to decide to put Joe Kinnear in charge of player recruitment.
