Problem for me is the psychological impact of going into the NLD 4 points behind Arsenal, on both teams. If we we were going into the game knowing a win would take us above them I’d fancy us but I can see it being a draw now. Truth is we fucked it against Brentford and Brighton, we had to go into the NLD 3 or less points behind them.

I see it slightly different. We tend to screw up when we’re on top. I think the motivation will be more now that we’re behind……….or at least I hope so!!

That can't be right as we've won 1, drawn 2 and lost 1 in our last four.

Of course, you can go back to different points of the season but this was the table after the win against Villa. We had the positive momentum and Arsenal had just lost three out of their last four games.

Five thirty eight predictions are often in line with the bookies, and they had us at 65% of getting CL after the Villa game, about the same as they gave Arsenal to get CL ahead of this gameweek.

We had won 4 in a row at that point though so the chances to keep that going are very unlikely, there will always be a slip up soon. 4 wins in a row is great form for a team chasing 4th. We actually hit a good run of form from late February into March aside from an unfortunate loss at Utd. I think the expectation to keep winning is unrealistic because we're not title challengers. Losing 3 games in February though was most damaging particularly back to back at home. 5 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss is still good form from the last 8 games. If we had kept the sort of form from the last 8 games through the season we would be in top 4 or even 3rd. I just don't see how this last 2 month period has been what's costing us. It been our best run of form since November-December.

Even if Everton are safe by the final day, they’re going to want to finish well in their final home game and they have a decent record under Lampard at theirs too.

If we win NLD I Honestly think we are slight favourites. Newcastle have only lost at home twice in last 6 months to City and Liverpool. They also still have a shout for top 10 and a group of players playing for their futures in what will be exciting times for them.

Newcastle also have a free midweek this week.

Don’t see GD being a factor. We need to beat them and (them) not win at Newcastle.
Anyway proved not to be relevant today . I guess if we beat them , they win 1 and lose 1 of their other games and we win one and draw one that’s the only scenario. Or if we draw with them and win our other 2 and they draw both their last 2. Not likely combinations but who knows ?

I don’t think it will be a huge disaster if we end up 5th. More important who we sign in the summer. Even if we are in CL if Levy doesn't support him Conte will walk.

Do we want West Ham or UTD to end up in the Conference League? Personally I think it would hinder ETH.

Interestingly I’ve just worked out ( I think ) if we do get CL we’d squeeze into pot 2. If Arsenal get it and Leipzig get top 4 in Germany then they’d just miss out on pot 2 and be in pot 3 meaning a likely very tough draw.

I think even if Everton are safe by the last game of the season, the dust would not have settled there. Expect a lot of personnel changes there in the summer (players, who knows maybe management/coaching, board level etc). That was a big shocking scare for them this season.

So they'll want to go in good stead into the summer, put themselves in the shop window etc and with no nerves because they are safe, they might just put in a performance.

Only 2 weeks to go. Just want this to be over now to be honest. Every week hoping for arsenal to slip up and then seeing them scrape another win is really exhausting and deflating.

But win our next 2 and then let’s see how arsenal handle the pressure at Newcastle on a Monday night. If they win, then I think we have to hold our hands up and say they deserve it. But still a way to go yet :nailbiting:

4th was in our hands we cocked up at home against Brighton and that toothlessdisplayst Brentford. We now need Newcastle to help us.

That late goal against Brighton killed us.

Had we got the point in that match, then we’d be able to make CL by winning our last 3. That late goal took it out of our hands.

But it didn't!

If the late goal against Brighton killed us, the unlikely wins/draws against the best 2 teams in the league, are what kept us alive.

Football!

To be fair to Nick, I know what he means.

It was a single goal in the last couple of months that we would be expected not to concede.

There have been other poor results since Conte joined, though:

Losing two home games on the spin against Southampton and Wolves.

Losing away at Burnley.

I can forgive an away draw against a confident Brentford side, but those other 4 results (including Brighton) were really poor.

I'm not particularly content with Arsenal finishing above us, but it's quite funny if they're chuffed about their 4th place trophy again.

I think I'll enjoy the run-in more now that 3rd & 4th isn't close enough to be in our hands, and we can't finish lower than we are. I'd actually be gutted if we finish a point off CL places, as people will obsess over one result.
