I understand where you are coming from but there is also something to be said about being confident rather than fearing a disaster. The whole “spursy” thing can become a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy. There’s always this kind of expectation that things will go wrong and I think that feeling gets transmitted to the players.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with rocking up to Norwich with a swagger and fully expecting to beat them. That’s not being complacent it’s having a belief that we are winners. If we want to be involved in title chases and cup finals that’s exactly the kind of belief we will need.
Largely agree - there can be a fine line between rocking up confident, determined and professional with a job to do on the one hand and complacency on the other.

Its the difference between Liverpool and Abu Dhabi expecting to win every game, but working their bollox off for 95 mins to do so, and thinking all you have to do is show up to get 3 points because the opposition is “inferior”.

Yeah definitely. I think Conte alluded to this during his post match interview after Villa. He said something like smelling the blood and going for the kill. That’s what we need to do versus Norwich.

I think that will be the exact mentality going into Sunday. I don't think the players will be feeling heavy pressure going into the game, I think they will be incredibly motivated and excited to get to the job done. Obviously that could change with any setbacks on the pitch on Sunday but I don't think it'll be something weighing heavily on them before then.

They worked incredibly hard these last few games to keep in the race and Arsenal losing on Monday has given us an amazing opportunity. Just need to stay focused, be professional and get the job done.

Of course in football you can never rule things out - especially as a Spurs fan - but the odds of us coming 5th are now in the region of 18-1 for a reason. I believe in Conte and the boys to seal CL football on Sunday.

I don't know where the Spursy tag came from - was it coming runners-up in the League those two years? Losing semi-finals? Harsh considering we had the youngest team in the League at that time and never actually led the table as far as I remember. And all those years of qualifying for Europe continuously, compared to other Big 6, unlikely last minute turnarounds etc...

You've kind answered your own question mate.

Runners up, losing semi's etc etc.

Almost, just not quite enough.

Spursy.

The original meaning of Spursy came from us; Mendes disallowed goal, lasagnegate, finishing 4th but Chelsea winning the Champs league so we miss out (only for them to change the rule so it couldn't happen again), Dier handball that leads to a new interpretation of the laws etc...

It was other clubs's fans that started to use it as us not being good enough/bottle jobs whatever they want to call it, which came to our fans using it in the same way and the meaning being blurred.

I'm sure it's just a phrase a pundit used and it stuck because it sounds natural. Spursy just sounds right compared to West Hamsy, Arsenalsy (or Arsy?) or Evertonsy system.

I was thinking earlier about our previous Top 4 finishes and thought that, IF we get the job done on Sunday this will be our most satisfying Top 4 finish. We’ve done it 6 times since Top 4 = Champs League and each time we’ve either clinched UCL qualification with one or 2 games left (2010 / 2018), often losing the last game of the season (2010 / 2016), or it’s been overshadowed by not winning the league (2016 / 2017), or in 2019 we stumbled over the line and we’re preoccupied with the Champs League final. And of course in 2012 UCL qualification was still out of our hands and was subsequently taken from us.

IF we do finish 4th this season it won’t have been our best finish, or our best season by a long way, but it will be the first time we end the season just able to celebrate finishing in the top 4 on the last day without something else hanging over us.

Would be very nice if Everton don’t sort themselves out tonight and still need a point come weekend.

I still can't decide if Everton would have more chance of getting something at the Emirates if they were safe and relaxed or still needed points. Judging by how they are playing under pressure I'm actually thinking the former unfortunately....

As it stands they will need a win at Arse to guarantee staying up. But yes they don't seem to deal with pressure

And Chelsea will need a point to keep 3rd from us

Could only be better if Burnley won I suppose

Yep. And Leicester beating Chelsea would be much appreciated, too.

As things currently stand, I think it couldn't be any better if the results stay as they are right now.

I still think Everton will get something from the weekend fixture (and no, not a battering).

I'm very much looking up the table.

Arsenal vs Everton in an all-out battle of who can shit themselves the most under pressure. Going to need a lot of adult diapers at The Emirates.

If Everton had won tonight they’d definitely had a few bevvies and be totally shot for Sunday. It’s miles better if they need something. Tbh the pressure will probably feel less away from home.
