If he super enjoys being here with poch this season and we're competitive/progressive and he can see how poch will finish off shaping the team next summer, we have a chance of keeping him (and others) for next season. After that he'd most likely be off.

Players fall in love with Poch, that's a huge plus for us at the stage we're at right now.

Depends who comes in for him in all honesty. If he has a good season and attracts the likes of Barcelona then even if we do get Champions League we'll have a tough time keeping him.

Wasn't he already on Barca's radar??

But yeah, of course, no club anywhere is safe from RM/Barca if they are adamant.

But poch will give us our best chance in the circumstance imo.

“Playing at the highest level is, of course, very important for Jan,” he said.

Great, maybe we'll see him actually perform at a decent level this year, then. Because it he's going to follow the blueprint of what he has shown after the game at Anfield in 2013, then his best shot at CL football will be with Ajax or Ludogorets.

The reliable Lyall Thomas saying an update on his contract is coming shortly.

:)

He's only seen as reliable because people keep putting the prefix 'reliable' before his name. I've seen nothing to suggest this guy has any more of a clue than any other "journo".

Some fans certainly fall in love with him, it seems. It will be interesting to see if a wish to leave after a 7th/8th finish would be overcome by a love in for some of the apparently class players that have clubs queuing up to sign them.

Well, it would be poch's lure plus the level of progress they would have seen over the season in comparison to the rest of their time here. There'd be a lot of factors centred around poch's effect on the team that might be attractive in keeping them here for another season.

If the buzz about where we are going is super positive and high, that can go a long way and be quite persuasive in itself.

I wonder how many players would have left Southampton if poch stayed....

Well that's real commitment isn't it. Jan would like to play CL football with Spurs, but if we do not qualify, he may have to consider his options next summer. This man for our captain, NO THANKS. Give it to somebody who deserves it, Step forward Hugo...

I expect both Lloris and Jan to leave us next summer.

If that is the case I will expect £60m minimum coming our way. Not that I expect it to happen.

With both signing new contracts we will hold all the cards. So anyone wanting a piece will have to pay some extortionate fee. Which won't be easy for anyone. As most clubs actually seem to be taking FFP into consideration.

I dont think we need to be screwing about this. I like Jan a lot and would much prefer he stays (same with Hugo) but he's not irreplaceable and neither is Hugo. I personally think it's harder to find a high quality striker than it is to find a CB.

As we've seen with Fazio, you can also find really good deals on CB's.

He'll sign a new deal but will more than likely leave next summer if we dont finish top 4, which is pretty likely. I'm personally ok with that because as good as he can be, an unmotivated Jan Vertonghen is a player that we don't need.

That's a good question and something of a chicken and egg scenario - I reckon Poch knew there was going to be a big sale and that Lallana and more were going to be allowed their transfers regardless of Poch's staying or going. And for 25 million, you'd have to say that's not unreasonable. One more season of them all together would have been interesting to watch.

As for us, I'd say the progress has to be tangible for players like Vertonghen to stay put*, which is why I'd imagine Poch wont gloss over cup competitions this year. Going deep into the league cup, for example, can go your way with a couple of decent draws and taking it seriously. Buzz will only get us so far...and games against the bigger sides will kill off any buzz unless we make some inroads into our levels of performance in recent times.

*For the record, I don't think we should hold ourselves to ransom over Vertonghen and should let him go for any decent bid that arrives.

I hope this new contract comes with a complimentary kick up the arse. He can be brilliant but if he continues to have the same attitude as last season I really won't be too disappointed next summer when some unsuspecting club gets Levy'd to the tune of £30m.

Saying that, I do get where some of the players are coming from with regards to signing new contracts. I can only liken it to my own work where, if my managers kept getting fired every 6 months and all the best people kept leaving for bigger companies (and pay rises) I'd certainly have to think hard about committing my future.

Agreed. Milk the deal if he does want to go. There are other CBs for sure.

Seems understandable to me from Jan's point of view. He is now getting into his late 20s and wants to play in the Champions League.

Think we need to really target Champions League qualification now as we have a few players who are at the level of sides that do well in the Champions League (getting to the knockout stages) and some including Jan are at an age where they need to get there soon.

Really hope we get into Champions League as it makes it somewhat easier to hold onto players as well as attracting new ones. Also it's a great tournament to be in, loved the last run we had :).

Think everyone already knew that its CL next season or both Jan and Lloris are sold. We need to be in CL. Thankfully, we have 2 avenues to get in now.

i'm not worried about the prospect of jan leaving because we have vlad. i'm also not worried about hugo as fortunately the top sides all seem fairly sorted for keepers.
