From The Sun

TOTTENHAM chief Juande Ramos has agreed to splash out £4.5million for Espanyol’s No1 Carlos Kameni.
The White Hart Lane boss is now discussing personal terms with the Cameroon keeper and hopes to clinch the signing in the next few weeks.

Spurs are prepared to offer Kameni, 24, a three-year deal worth around £30,000 a week.

It is understood the player wants a longer contract and discussions are ongoing.

But it signals the end for Tottenham’s England keeper Paul Robinson as part of a major reshuffle in the summer. Former England No 1 Robinson is a target for Middlesbrough and Aston Villa.

From the Mirror:

Tottenham manager Juande Ramos has agreed a £4.5million deal with Spain's Espanyol for Cameroon keeper Carlos Kameni.
Kameni must now agree personal terms as he has been offered a three-year deal at White Hart Lane - but is holding out for a four-year deal worth £30,000-a-week.
However Ramos is now confident of getting his top keeper target Kameni after fending off interest from Manchester United following positive reports from the Red Devils' European scout Martin Ferguson, brother of their boss Sir Alex.
Spurs' spending on keepers will not end there as they are set for a shake-up this summer which could spell the end for Paul Robinson and Radek Cerny, who are both set to leave White Hart Lane at the end of the season.
Tottenham have looked at Villarreal's Diego Lopez, but are not prepared to meet the £4.5m price tag.
Scouting trips to Germany have also failed to find the top-class keeper they crave.
But Ramos is in the driving seat for Kameni and his agents IMG have given the go-ahead for the start of talks.
An IMG source admitted: "They are now negotiating a deal - and there is a hope that it will end positively."
Tottenham are also interested in Espanyol's Spanish centre-half Dani Jarque, 24, and his name is still on their agenda this summer as Ramos looks to strengthen his squad.

I think the 4.5 million fee was a mistake from the Mirror (it is the price for Kameni) because I am sure a Villareal representative said the other day that they wouldn't listen to anything less than 24 million euros.

Diego Lopez is worth more than £4.5million and I think Kameni has a clause in his contract...

:-? Oh good, another inconsistent mental keeper.

Anyone who watched more than 10 minutes of the African Nations Cup could tell you that. I'm not convinced the grass is greener on this one. I'm really not.

:? describes it for me.

To be fair to him, in the ANC his team mates didn't really bother to do much defending, nobody did.

I think his performances for Espanyol would represent a better yard stick, none of which I've seen.

His decision-making is on par with Robinson's. He's a typical African goalkeeper as well [racist, racist!] in that he makes spectacular saves for no reason and makes stupid decisions coupled with random comedy pieces of professional football.

Can't we just sign a good 'keeper?!?

I've seen kameni a few times and I haven't yet seen him do anything kamikazee although I didn't watch the ACN where apparently he was slightly mental.

Most recently I watched Espanyol at Real madrid where he played very well (the same can't be said of Jarque in that game).

Whilst on the subject of keepers anybody seen that clown Gomes this morning on Setanta news behaving like an idiot in the PSV Ajax game?

those with a nervous disposition will still need to be reminded to breath while we defend anything aerial.

Ah well, mad is a slight improvement on sad?

He is generally consistent for Espanyol and what does his nationality have to do with anything?

I agree. Kameni was very good in that game, whilst Jarque gave away an unnecessary penalty and was generally a bit suspect. Although in Jarque's defence, he had been out with his toe injury for several weeks.

But the comparision between Kameni and a young David James is entirely valid, and has nothing to do with race. Both James & Kameni are very naturally talented keepers with great reflexes and big frames. They also tend to back their own ability, and therefore come for crosses that they should perhaps leave to their CBs. And it's that over aggressive decision making that is their achilles heel.

James is a very smart guy - he writes and speaks well - but his decision-making didn't really improve until his early to mid-thirties. And I'm sure he constantly had coaches banging on at him to cut out the Bruce Grobelaar impressions.

Obviously, players with genuine talent are usually preferable to players with average talent. But GK is the position where mistakes tend to be most costly.

It's a tricky one. On sheer ability, I'd be very happy to sign Kameni. And hope that Don Juande and our new goalkeeping coach can greatly improve his decision-making. .
