People losing their shit over the state of the squad now?

We are only missing a 4th choice cb right now, and have strengthened in our key areas.

People throwing around comments about incompetence seems overboard. It's not football manager. You can't make teams bid, or force players out without paying off contracts in full.

If you want enic out, then actually have a large scale demonstration outside the stadium prior to the Sheffield utd game.

Lots of you come on here and blame the fans, yet do fook all about it yourselves. Even the guy who arranged the last enic out protest has given up, because its all talk on social media and no appetite in the real world.
We are missing 3rd and 4th choice CBs

Not really sure what people’s obsession with getting rid of “deadwood” is. I guess because they’re taking up squad space? But it’s pretty clear Ange won’t play them if he doesn’t want to, so why does it matter if whoever decides to stay? We’ve only got a game a week til January, they’re likely not going to play.
I think it’s a terrible culture as well and contributes to the lack of a winning mentality….. you can be crap at at Spurs and still stick around and get paid tons.

For the game a week we’ve got, it’s pretty good to me. Besides, I’d rather we promote youth again rather than buying stopgap replacements. The players Ange doesn’t wanna play won’t.
I get that this season we will be ok, unless we get bad injuries.

But even when in Europe, we’ve had a lot of deadwood clogging up the squad.

If Ange takes us to 4th this season, will we do deals for the deadwood to allow us to bring in betters players? History suggests not.

Because like it or not, Levy isn’t going to sanction additions to the wage bill when he is already paying 30+ professionals, some of whom won’t now even be registered. Our deadwood is probably taking up 25m per season in wages. The fact they are all our top earners just makes the problem even worse.

that’s before even considering what to do with these extra players during training sessions. Leave them to do fitness work day in, day out on their own? Lingering around like a bad smell. Or involve them but then have sessions at a lower quality level because they can’t do what’s required?

That’s how contracts work though. It’s worse if we make a habit of saying “you’re not what we want so we’ll pay you to go away”.

There’s a reason a lot of PL clubs have to loan out players - the wages that we agreed to pay to entice them in the first place are too high for other leagues. It’s the other side of the coin.

But we have - we let Dele, Doherty, Aurier go for free and moved many players out on loan to appease Conte.

If you’re arguing they’re both our highest paid and incapable of basic training, the fact they were signed in the first place is more damning than them still being here. But we offered them that salary for their services, and they’re fully entitled to it.

We’ll be fine. Most of their contracts are up at the end of the year. Then we can sign some new players that everyone calls deadwood twelve months later.

No, sanchez is 3rd choice. He isnt that bad
He is that bad. Stepping in v Brentford doesn’t change that he has neither the technical skills nor the intelligence/concentration to play Ange’s system. He was back to his normal self v Fulham. And he is totally incapable of playing on the left.

Agree.

Before salaries went up, we actually did well at selling our deadwood to the likes of Portsmouth, Sunderland etc.

Holding onto all these players for so long has created an awful culture. It’s part of why I really hoped we’d sell PEH this summer.

Two seasons of a reasonable player who didn’t make the grade then get our money back and a freed up squad place.

Instead no incoming money and a squad place taken up.

Of course it’s a sign of poor recruitment / misjudged extensions of contracts.

In fact, every club should have deadwood. It’s a sign of an evolving team. It’s just we seem to struggle to get rid of ours more than others.

he ain’t going nowhere sadly.

best we can do is hope he keeps the fuck out of Ange’s way and if we get poor results he doesn’t knee jerk sack.

We don’t spend quick enough to build a winning team quickly so the hope is a long term manager and long term build and that requires to use a phrase constantly said about Arteta ‘trust the process’.

We cannot have a repeat of Jol, Harry or Poch, club has to stick with it now when the club finds a manager that fits.

Were you at the game?

He was fine vs Fulham. 1 wayward pass in the last 5 minutes was the only complaint I have towards the performance.

He's a confidence player, and needs a manager who supports him.

Also, at a push Davies can play there, or heaven forbid we give some youth players a chance.

We are playing 1 game a week until Christmas.

United only got rid of Phil Jones this summer; Chelsea still had Baba Rahman til July. It seems like it’s only us cos we watch us more than anyone else, but it really is every top club. Particularly when the management changes so often.

He's basically gambled on VDV and Romero missing no more than 2 or 3 games between them this season. Any more than that and we're done. In many respects going out of the Carabao at the first hurdle was a masterstroke.

I had a dream last night that Levy sacked Postecoglu and hired Ancelotti over night. I was on the team bus for some reason and everyone went mental.

Top clubs selling deadwood is definitely an issue all the top clubs have had.

Utd were excessively stupid in extending Phil Jones contract.

I used to think Arsenal had massively messed up in letting so many players leave on free transfers. I actually think now that they were ahead of the curve in doing so rather than extending their contracts.

Yes, I was thanks. He was a bag of nerves as always with no positional awareness. And his uncertainty spreads across the rest of the back 4. Relying on a young player to add leadership which a full international with a lot of games under his belt should have been doing, just shows how prejudicial he is to our performance.

Agree. Although I do think we have reached a stage where we have accumulated more than most at any one time. Trying to get rid of a couple is normal - as a squad should be balanced enough than you should be limiting ins and outs to 2-3 per year anyway. We had, what, 7-9 at the moment?
