What are the results that will 'drop off' so to speak for Spurs and City this weekend? Will a win see us jump to 77 points or simply tread water?

It appears we're entering what is historically a tricky run of games where we don't normally do too well (4pts last year, 6pts in 11/12 and 4pts in 10/11)

Hull (H) - Two defeats and one win (3pts from the 9 available) - Replacing Wigan who were relegated
Everton (A) - Lost three years running (0/9)
Newcastle (H) - Won three years running (9/9)
Man City (A) - Lost three years running (0/9)
Man Utd (H) - Two draws and one defeat (2/9)
So.... now that everybody's calmed down after our run of poor results we can look back and see that we actually gained a point on last year over those five games (Beat Hull, Drew with Eve & Utd)

With the two wins against Fulham & Sunderland we're now 3pts ahead of where we were against the same teams last year.

Incredible to think it's pretty much a new team gelling together and we've still managed to improve on our results (if not performances). It bodes well for when we finally click into gear and start playing well.

Next four games could be interesting as the results over the past three years are not as you would expect

Liverpool (H) won three years running (9/9)
Southampton (A) won three years running (9/9) - can't remember who they replaced when getting promoted
West Brom (H) two draws one win (5/9)
Stoke (H) two draws one win (5/9)

Now that everybody is back on happy street and raving about Sherwoods incredible management skills (yes yes yes I know...) I thought it would be interesting to see where we are on the view of 'how did we do against these teams last year'...

Against the same teams last year we also had a great record winning four and drawing two (compared to this year winning five and drawing one only change being last years draw at home to Stoke has been turned into a win) so even though it's looking good we have to take it with a pinch of salt as it's been against teams that we've historically done well against.

We beat City last year but even the toughest of Sherwood critics would be hard pushed to criticise him if we didn't beat them this year... but after that comes a run of four games where we dropped points last year
Hull (A) - Drew
Everton (H) - Drew
Newcastle (A) - Lost
Norwich (A) - Drew

If we can keep up this momentum and bring in some good points over those four games then we'll be well positioned to push on with both the Manchester clubs out of the way and can look forward to a strong finish to the season.

The graph is quite staggering... essentially showing that for the entire season we have been doing better than last season even though it really hasn't felt like that at times.

Good work mate.

Cheers, it's a tricky one to work out. Guess it's partly because our style over the first half of the season has been a bit soul destroying and mechanical (but still picking up 1-0 wins). We haven't had too many big performances but our standard form has been enough to edge games and the low points have been very low...

Doesn't help that the other teams around us are having record breaking seasons (highest ever points total for top four at this time of the year). I'm still confident that Liverpool won't keep up this form all season and Arsenal have got some massive games coming up in Feb & March which will knock them into a *cough* *cough* negative spiral ha ha

i like this comparison, so have updated through to match 25. Shows that we're not a long way off the top four over the last year. I'm amazed how close to Liverpool we are.

Esp when you look at the goal difference... we have to start putting teams away by scoring more if we want to compete at the business end of the season

And it's incredible that 74 points wouldn't make the top 4... 75 points if you consider Liverpool have that huge GD.

Fuck my life it's got competitive at the top.

So, after recent defeats to Arsenal, Chelsea & Norwich we now find ourselves 1pt behind where we were last year heading into the Liverpool game... We lost there last year so there's the potential for us to make up some ground but the run in looks good for us (historicaly).

If we are to match last years points total we need to W5 D1 L1 of our last 7 games and looking at how these games have previously gone over the last three years it's possible (and some would say likely) that we can put together that sort of run.

We can't control how the other teams get on but if we perform like we have before then there's no reason why we can't break that 70pt mark again which isn't bad for what has been deemed our worst season in recent memory (I still remember the Gerry Francis years)
