So yep looks like Red Bull had it dialled down, same old racing as last season, Verstappen steaming off into the distance

I'm not even sure next season will be any different. RB are the king of the current regs. The cost cap has hampered the ability of the other big hitters to play catch-up, and you need to question RB and their sister team and how creative they are with their budgets.

I like the idea of the cost cap, but they need to rework it slightly for the future, so we don't get another situation where one team nails it, and the rest are constantly playing catch-up.

I was being conservative with my prediction of Max coming in 10+ seconds ahead of second place. Looks like I should have been pessimistic and called it 20+. Perez in the same car is 18.688 behind as I write and the nearest non RB is more than 22 seconds behind.

Unless Verstappen gets some dodgy mechanical problems along the way you might as put his name on the drivers trophy now.

Just fast forwarded through my recording of the race, my take aways were....

First race and all but....

Max and that car are fucking unfair, he had a 1 second lead after 1 lap and in his last few laps he passed Yuki, Danny Ric, Magnusson and Zhou to ensure that he lapped HALF THE FIELD....

Credit to Sainz for taking the imitative to pass LeClerc

Logan Sargent really is that bad.

Alpine's cars are fucking pigs, they managed to beat Sargent who went off the track and Bottas who had a 52 second pit stop and they finished behind Hulkenberg who had front wing damage on the first lap. Shockingly bad.....Otmar must be fucking howling in laughter.

The Aston Martins did not seem to make much of a jump from the mid point of last season until now.

Looks like the McClarens and Mercs may be clumped together this season, wonder who can change their car fast enough to jump up the ranks.

Really odd choice by the RB team to call for Yuki to swap spots with Danny Ric with like 5 laps to go, only for Danny Ric to not catch Mags.

If Yuki swapped when told, Ricciardo could have beaten the Haas & maybe the Sauber. Instead he did so right as Verstappen was lapping them costing them both time & Ricciardo his tires. Then he acted like a petulant child & locking his tired right in front of Ricciardo & almost hitting him post race. Real lack of maturity all the way around from him for a non-points position.

Mercedes were nursing the car to the finish from lap 10. Not a good sign for them.

Acknowledging its just the first race - but more discouraging than the RB dominance is that the top teams seem pretty set in order too - so very little consequential racing even below the RBs.

Ferrari - clear 2nd best car.

Mercedes/McLaren - maybe the only battle

Aston Martin

The rest of the dreck.

It's not RB - It's Max Verstappen. He is 22 seconds ahead of his team-mate without breaking sweat. His fasted lap is 1.45 seconds faster than the next fastest (Leclerc). The gap between Perez and Sainz however is only 3 secs.
The conclusion is inescapable - Verstappen is just next level compared to the other 19 drivers in the field.

Its both.

Max is the best driver. But RB have a huge car advantage.

ETA - and no matter how you slice it - its bad for F1 when there is no competition.

Prior to RB I don't think Perez was anything more than a solid middle of the pack driver, he's never been anything special unlike Verstappen who looked like he was destined for the top in his debut season. What would be good for the sport would be if we could get a Rosberg/Hamilton type lineup at RB. There are much better drivers out there than Perez who would get more out of that car imo.

i wasnt going to watch it anyway, as dont have the channel, but is this going to be a normal thing of the GP being on a Sat and not Sun, or is it a one off?
Its a Ramadan thing.

Next week is Ramadan - so the Saudi GP was moved to Saturday. By rule, races have to be a minimum of a week apart - so they moved Bahrain back to Saturday.

Las Vegas will be on a Saturday - so it can be at night. There might be another race I am forgetting that is also on Saturday - but Race day is usually Sunday at every other track.
