Whilst he was outstanding for us this season, I suspect this has a lot to do with him not extending his contract and us not wanting to sign another defender with Toby still on the books (presumably the wages come into it).

I am surprised no-one has come in for him at £25m (yet) - but I guess part of the problem is his age (not a problem for big spenders) and his own preferences of wanting to go to a team at least as good as Spurs. I'd have thought he has a good 4y left at the top, certainly as an experienced back-up towards the end of this.

I do believe the £25m comes in during the final 2 weeks

What makes you think we won’t replace him? Hercules’ post literally said we’d buy a cb if and when he goes
Because we have other priorities and getting them over the line is still a fair way away then being able to shift the deadwood to provide funds for a right back and a central defender before the window shuts is asking a lot in my opinion.
Finding a good enough replacement for Toby won’t come cheap north of 30m I would say

Why should it? We have to generate funds in that department to spend it. And we cannot do that unless one or both is sold.
It does seem that once again, no one wants the players on our 'sell' list. And that's perhaps why we can't commit to other signings.

All this talk of pushing Toby out is probably just irrelevant. He's on holiday with wife and kids and isn't giving it a second thought. Anybody here take their work on holiday or regularly check in with their employers?

His mind seems make up and he has stated a few times he's not leaving.

He's on a beach and giving a transfer less thought than every single person on this forum.

Toby’s clause was signed before the PL agreed to end window before the season starts. I hope that doesn’t give us a problem in that he is still able to go abroad after our window closes but not the rest of Europe.

I take all of this as positive, as it says to me that an N’Dombele type, a Lo Celso type, and Sessegnon, Clarke have been identified as must haves regardless of outgoings as our squad is deficient in their respective roles. Therefore, none of these signings are dependent on selling Eriksen for instance. Then, we’d like to replace Toby and a right back, but that is dependent on selling Toby and a right back as we have depth there.

It all makes sense, it’s all positive, and much as we all want a new right back we can’t pay three first team right back salaries (not to mention screw over KWP’s career). However, N’Dombele, Lo Celso (or equivalents), and young hg talent are coming in this summer whatever happens, which makes for a happy window.

I think Toby will end up staying to be honest. Can't force him out and no guarantees he'll get a better offer. We'd have had 5 years of a top drawer defender on mid table wages, losing out on a fee won't kill us.

thanks for sharing as always Hercs!

Is it just me that was a bit 'meh' at the recent ITK!

If we don't get GLC then I honestly don't think we get another AMC this window. There's not really anyone else at a similar skill level and potential available in football right now without paying gazillions.

I bet most hadn't heard of him until recently, now it's the end of the world if he doesn't sign

I havn't even seen him play, havn:t seen much of Ndombele either.

But if these are players Poch desperately wants, and his first targets etc...

Then yes it will be disappointing if we can't get them, that's the point.

Probably because you surely you wouldn’t want to sell either of them on without knowing you already having replacement lined up?

Therefore if we want to sell them, surely we should be prioritising a replacement?

I agree... and he’ll be much better placed to get an high return for himself next season when the buying club have just saved a 25m transfer fee.

the KWP thing is a bit odd, if Poch rates him why doesn't he play him ? I mean its not as though the other 2 are world beaters

interesting to see how this plays out

I thought the Toby release clause had to be activated by the end of June. So all should be clear in the next week or so!
