Thanks Hercs!

I was in the assumption Trips and Aurier were defo heading out the door. Interesting we might keep them (which i think is a mistake).

Great if CE and TA stay. I don't think we can feasibly upgrade them.

Interesting no firm talk on who else we are making available to sell yet. I thought more would be leaked this time of year!

Really surprised by the Whiteman comments. I thought he was highly rated at the club, from what I’ve seen of him looks decent.

I'd be fascinated to get Pochettino's unguarded thoughts on the backline, because I can't make heads or tails of it. To me, the only real certainty is the Sanchez is going to a first team staple for a long time to come. Keeping in mind that CBs peak later than any other position, his performances as a 21 and 22 year old have been superb. So many interesting questions:

  1. Will Vertonghen renew his contract after next year?
  2. What's the deal with Toby?
  3. What's the deal with Rose?
  4. Are Davies and Dier's futures at CB?
  5. Is the goal to develop Sessengnon into a LB?
  6. Does Poch rate KWP and Foyth as long-term pieces?
  7. What are we going to do about RB?
  8. What about CCV and the academy players?
While this transfer window is rightly focused on Midfield, I wouldn't be surprised if next summer heavily focused on the defense. It's hard for me to see us making a big RB/CB move this summer regardless of outgoings considering how much we have on our plate already.

A pure Kane-type backup would be nice but both Son and Lucas have proven they are capable of playing there, and perhaps Parrott can get some time in cup matches. Maybe they would rather just keep developing Parrott rather than bring in another young competition.

Llorente started in 14 games last season and came on as a sub in 25 we simply have to replace him.

Last season we had Dele and Eriksen playing the majority of games in midfield out of necessity. If Lo Celso, Ndombele, and Sessegnon come in Son would get in at ST before Llorente, I'm certain of it.

This argument doesn't make too much sense unless this season's squad is gonna be exactly the same.

Son is the obvious second striker, Lucas the third choice.

We only need another wide option like Clarke. This would allow us to still field a balanced side when using either of those Kane replacements.

Parrott in the youth is also highly rated, and chances are VJ will still be here. He's no worse than Llorente. We'll be fine without a number 9 as long as we get a wide player.

Wanyama has Turkey or Chinese league 'more money than sense' potential but agree most developed leagues would be unlikely to spend much to get him with his recent injuries. Shame as he looked quite good when he came in towards the end of the season, especially 1st leg vs City in CL.

Thanks for update also Herc, plenty to chew on.

Whilst he was outstanding for us this season, I suspect this has a lot to do with him not extending his contract and us not wanting to sign another defender with Toby still on the books (presumably the wages come into it).

I am surprised no-one has come in for him at £25m (yet) - but I guess part of the problem is his age (not a problem for big spenders) and his own preferences of wanting to go to a team at least as good as Spurs. I'd have thought he has a good 4y left at the top, certainly as an experienced back-up towards the end of this.

Cheers @Hercules. The underlying message I think is patience. It doesn't look like we will necessarily be making eariy signings but I think that there is enough ITK to suggest that it won't be a fruitless transfer window.

Yeah, and I could accept the likes of Ndombele or Lo Celso taking longer as obviously they're tougher deals to do but I really don't think there's much excuse for not getting the likes of the Sess twins or Clarke in nice and early so they can get settled in and see what their roles are going to be with the first team. Really hope we've learned our lesson with the Grealish situation and don't try and take advantage of being the bigger player in negotiations and mess around with these deals. Get them done in a timely manner and then focus on getting the big deals done whenever that may be.

Pretty much every club rumored to be interested in Toby are rumored to be fighting for De Ligt right now. Wouldn’t surprise me if the losers of that race fall back to Toby by the end of the window.

The Toby situation is a strange one. Still one of the best defenders in premier league.

In my opinion would be disastrous not replacing him. Dier doesn’t want to be a defender and is no where near jan and Toby’s level. Sanchez and Foyth still have a lot to prove to be the mainstay of our defence for years to come.

A vertonghan injury would have serious repercussions on our chances of challenging for the title.

Why should it? We have to generate funds in that department to spend it. And we cannot do that unless one or both is sold.

I suppose my point is, if they have both been deemed expendable, it means the club feels they are both weak links in the squad. In which case one of them needs to be pushed out the door as soon as possible so we can replace them with somebody better.

Seems like the club are a little passive on the issue. Sorry if I’ve missed the point. Appreciate the info as always!

The fact that the club is content with both Serge and Trips leaving, and yet RB is still not a top priority confuses me a little.

I know we've done stupid stuff in the past, losing Berbatov and getting in just Frasier Campbell, not getting proper backup for Kane, selling Dembele etc. But we're not going to let Aurier and Trippier go without replacing at least one of them. If we had deals in place for them to both leave (which I would doubt anyway) I'm sure RB would then become the biggest priority at least for in that moment in time.

Hate to be a downer but we're gonna need a hell of a lot more than Toby to have a chance of winning the league. Until Pep (and perhaps even Klopp) moves on it's gonna be almost impossible.

Ideally we keep Toby but I actually think RB is more important at the moment. We've survived an entire season without Toby before and finished 3rd, but we've looked dodgy at RB for a while now which not only hinders us defensively, but also going forward.

If we had the choice between keeping both Toby and Trippier, and replacing the two of them with Andersen and a new improved RB, I'd probably go with the latter, especially as Toby has been itching to leave for a while.

What makes you think we won’t replace him? Hercules’ post literally said we’d buy a cb if and when he goes
