not for the tournament he didn't, he dropped out of one round of friendlies more than six months before the championships because he wanted to concentrate on settling in at spurs. he played all of the subsequent games including their crucial qualifying win against croatia but then southgate being the petty slug of a man he is thought he'd teach dier a lesson and took calum chambers, ben gibson, michael keane and liam moore ahead of him. england promptly got knocked out of the group stages and a year later dier will be starting for england seniors at the real euros while the rest of those players are absolutely nowhere.
I remember Southgate said the reason he took the others instead of Dier is because the others wouldn't be available for the next tournament but Dier would be (what a bullshit reason).......actually Gareth he won't.

He's our most effective player, but he's not our best player. See the 'does the best team = the team that wins' thread for the rest of this argument. I'm not gonna spell it out for you :).

Dier is the biggest tactical Pochettino find for Spurs so far. The way he slots in between two cb is extremely efficient. Besides he covers lots of ground elsewhere. And he scores goals, scares the shit out of the opposition. And always has the back of Dele Alli. Dier is a gem.

sorry if posted, and not sure what thread this should go in, thought it was interesting enough to post

passerby on coys: Just met Eric Dier's mum
Was at a work do and met Eric Dier's mum! She's really cool. What I found out in no particular order as I remember it:
He was a Man U supporter growing up but is now 100% Spurs. She said he absolutely loves it here.
They all love Poch. He doesn't berate them for mistakes in training or on the pitch but encourages them to express themselves. He was really embarrassed about the reaction to Alli's miss, hence the interview.
She goes to every home game and most away games and was really emotional the first time she heard us singing his name, at West Brom away.
He tweeted about Arsenal players being moaners when he was on loan at Everton but since he's been at Spurs it had been retweeted thousands of times.
The players are loving the chase at the moment. Not feeling the pressure, more the excitement of being on the verge of something really special.
The bromance with Alli is very real.
The squad and management staff are all made up of people who are all genuinely really nice and they all get on great.
He's had no indication about whether he'll start for England in the euros. I slightly drunkenly suggested I'd slap Hodgson's mum if he didn't. Feel a bit embarrassed about that bit now.
First and only ITK I'll probably ever get!

Took this guy on as my adopted son at the beginning of the season and I have been proud throughout.

Showing that the "double pivot" of a midfield two isnt necessarily the be all and end all, Dier's position, and how he is used is perhaps Poch's greatest tactical achievement for us this year.

Im in awe of this guy.

I Love Eric Dier.....

He's been an absolute revelation to me in midfield. I was one of those desperate for us to sign a defensive midfielder. It was so blatantly obvious to me that we were very weak in that area and our goal difference was a joke. When we missed out on Kondogbia, Imbula, Kramer, Bender and a whole lot more I thought we were in for more of the same. I didn't believe Poch for one second when he said we would be OK with Dier and thought we had blown it.

Step forward Eric Dier who has been absolutely fantastic. Toby has played a huge part in beefing up our defence, but it's Dier who stops the opposition from getting at our back 4. He organises, communicates, covers all over the place and tackle anything that moves. He's an extra centre back at set pieces and knows how to mark his man or score a goal.

Without him in the team we looked like sitting ducks v Dortmund and one of my biggest fears has been that we don't bring in some adequate cover for him. We don't have anyone who comes close to what he brings to the team unless Dominic ball or Harry Winks can step up.

Just overhead while waiting in the queue at the co-op

bloke 1: "Yeah, Dier is nailed on to be on the plane, but he'll have to be careful"
bloke 2: "Careful?"
bloke 1: "The way he ploughed into Chelsea, surprised he didn't get himself hurt"
bloke 2: "Mate, the only chance there was of him getting hurt that day was getting a crick in his neck looking down at all his victims" :joyful:

I remember the first time this season I thought to myself "fuck me, this might actually work". It was Everton at home, they were attacking. Lukaku got the ball just outside the are, looks up and sees Cleverley (I think) more or less unmarked. Lukaku looks down to find out where the ball is to make the pass. Dier, having left Cleverley open on purpose, steps in and intercepts the pass. Done Lukaku like a kipper.

It's not a revolutionary thing, but it showed that he wasn't just a centre back put in midfield to "put a foot in" and win headers. He was a sly dude as well, and this was probably the game where he first started showing signs of having a decent pass on him as well. He thouroughly dominated that game.

And now we'd all like his children. Fantastic character and player.

Not sure if there is another Eric Dier thread on here or else where but in case there wasn't, I thought this needed a bump due to his performances for England!

I love Eric Dier
