The Case for Eric Dier

Yesterday was marked by the announcing of the shortlists for the PFA player of the year awards. Harry Kane was nominated for both, and Dele Alli nominated for the young player award. Most of the discussion around the shortlist focussed on how Toby Alderweireld was unlucky to miss out. Spurs also launched their player of the year award to be voted for by members. All over twitter and message boards I've seen lots of support for Toby, but I wonder if we're overlooking someone.

Much has been made of the dramatic turn around in our defensive play since this time last year. We finished last season with the 4th worst defensive record in the league despite finishing 5th in the league. It was clear defensive work would be needed over the summer, and the arrival of Toby Alderweireld to partner Jan Vertonghen in the heart of our defence would appear on first viewing to be the change that has mattered most.

Now, I don't want to detract from the impact Alderweireld has had in this team, or belittle his performances at all. He's been imperious and a rock all season. But, with that said, I think there is another player who is more directly responsible for the improvement in our defensive stability, if we have to level it at one player.

Step forward Eric Dier. Way back in the middle of last summer, there were a large number of fans pulling their hair out as what they'd hoped was some sort of pre-season power play to get Levy to buy a defensive midfielder, turned into Eric "he's a centreback" Dier starting our opening game of the season, and most that have followed, in the centre of midfield.

The biggest difference from last season to this, is the system. We press better as a collective, we are more clever in regard to where and when we press. But positionally, Dier's deep role has given us a stability that we didn't have before. We are able to attack more forcefully without leaving ourselves over exposed at the back.

A case in point would be to look at the games against Dortmund. Away, we were most significantly under strength in two positions; upfront and in the centre of midfield. Without Dier in the middle our shape was lost and our backline was hideously exposed. As good as Toby Alderweireld is, and he is bloody good, he couldn't stop us losing in the way we did. At home Dier came back into the team, and whilst the tie was largely done, and perhaps Dortmund didn't go at us as hard as they did in the first, it's hard to tell how much of that was also due to the presence of Dier in the middle, shoring us up.

Alderweireld has been a great signing for us this season, and is without a doubt in my mind the best centre back in the league at this moment in time. But with regards to his importance for Spurs this season, I'd argue the player that comes out on top is Eric Dier.

I love Eric Dier. Eric Dier loves me.

I mentioned on the thread that you rarely see a defensive player recognised for those awards.

Dier has had critical adulation this season though and of course is looking very likely that he will not only go to France with England but that he might start. Not bad considering he didn't make the squad for the u21s last summer.

Beyond Stones, he was probably the best performed CB available to England. It was criminal he wasn't taken. But England still keep choosing ex-player, first time numpty coaches as U21 level. I can see why players avoid the U21's, it does nothing for their development as they are learning(??) from coaches with no proven ability

Hopefully Eric makes the premier league team of the year thingy as a nice little reward.

Surely Kane, Toby, Lloris, dier, rose, walker are all in with a shout for that

The PFA front 6 will consist (almost certainly) of the 6 shortlisted players for the main award - Dier has no chance
________
_______ Morgan Alderweireld _________
Mahrez Kante Ozil Payet
Vardy Kane

Just not sure on the 3 blanks

He is playing a role tottally alien to the Premier league, in that he is in and out of defence and midfield. As we see other teams try and adopt a similar approach(which they will), the appreciation for what he does will grow.

It again says something for the teams performance this year that there are several players that if they miss out on player of the season (for Spurs) then they can consider themselves a little unlucky. Dier is one of them having been quietly brilliant for this season protecting the back 4 and providing a starting point for the attack.

Kane and Alli get most of the headlines, Toby noted for great defending, Lloris superb all season and the likes of Dembele shone the sort of player we thought we had but had got lost somewhere a couple of seasons back all could win the Spurs prize and therefore could be included in the PFA one.

I think along with Kane he's been our most irreplaceable player this season.

Without someone filling that role last season we looked very flimsy in midfield at times, and we've looked equally flimsy whenever he hasn't played this season.

So in many ways he's been our most important player this season, but partly because of our inability to bring in a decent alternative.

Of course that doesn't detract from how blooming brilliant he's been, and he'd be in my top 3 with Kane and Tobes in terms of Spurs player of the year. If he continues to develop as he has (and is) then I think he'll be player of the year next season.

For me Tobes just about scrapes it this season...but super Eric is close behind.

He made himself unavailable for the U21s I think.

Personally I'd have had Dier ahead ofAlli for the young player award.

not for the tournament he didn't, he dropped out of one round of friendlies more than six months before the championships because he wanted to concentrate on settling in at spurs. he played all of the subsequent games including their crucial qualifying win against croatia but then southgate being the petty slug of a man he is thought he'd teach dier a lesson and took calum chambers, ben gibson, michael keane and liam moore ahead of him. england promptly got knocked out of the group stages and a year later dier will be starting for england seniors at the real euros while the rest of those players are absolutely nowhere.

I personally thought he lost a bit of edge when he started walking the disciplinary tightrope.

certainly not under appreciated by our faithful, but we will see his true value when he's suspended/injured etc.

Not true. I believe Liam Moore works at my local butchers...
