My best time ever following Spurs was watching the UEFA cup final win at WHL in 84. So I'd be quite happy for us to win a trophy (pref. Europa League) and not qualify for the Champs League for the next 5 or 6 seasons, say. OK, there's a flaw in that - we qualify via the EL, obviously. But if we didn't I'd still be happy with winning that one trophy for now.

Think I'd rather we were a well-run club bringing plenty of academy players through, playing good football than qualifying regularly for CL - if it was an either or situation. However, this season we might get the whole bloody basket of goodies, and I certainly won't be complaining.

While we're building the new stadium and going through this period of change, consistent Champions League football has to be the priority. I don't believe it comes down to preference, it's simply common sense that we need Champions League money to help us get through the next few seasons.

well if we won the EL, then the CL every year after and be finishing 6th I could suffer being CL champ, though would love to win the league every year too
This is unsustainable though.
Teams that finish 6 th every year rarely win anything.

read the post I quoted? my post was posted as a joke, even I know we won't win CL year on year out, but if next year we finish 3rd in CL group and drop into the Europa, then went on to win it, we then go into the CL and who knows where we will be this time next season in the league

I would love Tottenham to finish top4 each season, but top4 only gives us route to CL, I want us to lift trophies and finish top4, not impossible, Man U & City, Chelsea, Arsenal and when regs Liverpool have done so

Doesn't TV money actually dwarf CL money now?

Yes, it does.

That's why the league has become more competitive, I believe. Even joke clubs like Wham can now afford to buy good players.

But aside from the money, playing in the CL remains the main ambition for all the best players, so qualifying is still incredibly important if you want to hold together and sustain a squad that's good enough to challenge at a really high level.

I assume that you get a lot more of the TV money by coming in the top 4, don't you? Or does it not work like that?

Hate talking about money and football though...

Re:age - I'm 34 and my formative footy-watching years were Spurs being shit - any Euro footy was the holy grail - would love us to win the Europa league - would be special. Would also help us point out which North London team has more European trophies.

I like us to win a few FA cups, because it's our cup and I'm fed up with seeing gooners wave it around.

I fully expect us not to win the league in my life time, so this season is really freaking me out.....

I've been supporting Spurs for around 25 years now and during that time, there's always been a frustration that we weren't achieving our potential as a club. Whether it was the backroom staff, the owners, the managers the players, we were just never firing on all cylinders.

So for me that's what I most want Tottenham to do; be as well a run club as it can be.

That's why the Poch revolution is so great, because it genuinely feels like he's shaking the club up from top to bottom.

Yes, by a long way.
I suspect that next seasons revenues will see 15 out of the top 20 richest clubs in the world all being in the Premiership.
West Ham, Everton, Newcastle etc will probably overtake the likes of AC Milan and Inter in financial terms.

Except in sales and marketing terms the CL will become a redundant competition for the Premiership as the Premiership will be the premier competition in Europe.

This is the reason teams such as Bayern are squealing about the CL at the moment as they are unable to grow at the same rate as English clubs and don't want to get caught up by the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal, let alone us.

Contrary to the fact that I consider winning a cup (or the league, Champions League or Europa League) to be success, but not simply qualifying for the Champions League, I place more value on Champions League football.

Winning trophies equates to success, but regularly playing Champions League football is essential to being able to compete with the top teams over a prolonged period, and increases the chances of winning more trophies.

The other thing to keep in mind is exposure and prestige of a competition. Even if the Premier League is far and away the richest and most popular league in the world, it will be more prestigious to be European champions than Premier League champions. Players competing in the Champions League will also attract more global attention from fans, bigger personal endorsement deals and stand out more to the coaches of their national teams.

Although some top players will inevitably be happy to settle for a mid-table Premier League team for a big pay cheque, others will only want to play for a successful and competitive team. When you are earning silly money either way, it becomes easier to make a purely footballing decision over a financial decision. Champions League football is going to remain key to signing the top names.

If you were Lionel Messi, would you leave Barcelona for Stoke, for a £100k per week pay increase?

I consider success to be a trophy of any description. 1 every few years would be nice.

But what I really look for is excitement. Wether that is a race for the league title, top 4, cup semi finals and finals. The worst thing as a supporter is a nothing season. I feel we have put in the groundwork to be a club that is competitive in at least 1 competition every season.

I'm 63 and have been waiting 55 years for another Spurs title. Many thousands of supporters have never seen us win a title.
Let's conquer England 1st then Europe.

The game is about glory ie winning trophies not coming 4th. Don't get me wrong qualifying for the cl would be a great achievement for us but I would take a trophy over it any day of the week but I see no reason why we shouldn't aim for both.
IMO the cl has lost a bit of its appeal in the last few years and needs a bit of a shake up along with the Europa where their are far too many nothing matches
