There seems to be a split of what people would rather we achieve as a club in the 21st century.

Some would rather we established ourselves in the leagues top 4 and be regularly competing in the champions league.

Some would trade that in for cup wins.

I'm curious, is it a generation thing?

I'm not sure it's as easy as simply preferring Cup wins over Champions League.

I would like us to establish ourselves as a top 4 team, and from that the cup success is more likely to follow.

But I suspect it is a generational thing because the FA Cup used to be the pinnacle, but now it's a shadow of it's former self as a competition which is why I'm not overly disappointed we lost yesterday. If people have only grown up in that environment of the cups being treated as a nuisance it's not surprising they consider the Champions League to be more important.

For what it's worth I've seen us win cups and qualify for the Champions League, and for me the year we were in the Champions League was the most fun season as a Spurs fan in recent memory.

And I'm 107 years old. Not quite as old as @Archibald&Crooks

why can't you do both?

I want us to finish to win the quadruple at the start of every season, usually my wants are over by January or February, but if we could win a trophy and finish top 3 for the rest of my life (mainly the 1st spot) i'd die a reasonably happy man

I think your hypothesis will be proven wrong. Age isn't a factor, I think.
The difference, IMO, is wether you believe CL is the ultimate goal, or not.
I see CL as important because I believe it is a stepping stone to winning trophies, not a replacement for trophies.

I want us to win the league and focus on being regulars in the champions league, anything other than that is a bonus. I love trophies and winning anything would be nice quite frankly but I think given how football is now our focus has to be on trying to win our domestic league and playing against the best teams in the world via the CL.

Let's face it winning the league would make any cup competition look pathetic in comparison, you ask any supporter here and they would take winning the league over anything else.

In a perfect world we would win everything though.

I only find myself here because that codpiece TSH tagged me…..So while i'm here……

Any answer I would come up with would require levels of concentration and time that i'm simply not willing to give the subject. Not only that but it would also go against my policy of not making weighty, lengthy and sensible posts. (seeing as nobody else does I wouldn't want to rock the boat)

So i'll confine myself to simply saying "meh"

And if you give that word some serious thought, you'll find a philisophical onion in there just waiting to be peeled.

Arsenal qualified for the champions league every year but until 2 years ago, hadn't won diddly squat for 10 years.

I guess that's the model I'm using.

Generally there's 3 options I guess.

Win the league.
Win a cup
Finish in the top 4.

Occasionally a team excels and does 2 of the above.

TBH unless we are in the Top 4 we're unlikely to be regularly competing for cups. But I'd rather we won silverware than finish 4th for years on end.

I can't vote as I'm soon to be 25 and see FA Cup/Europa League trophies as success. But, also see top four as success, especially as that was the aim in August.

As said already success for us this season back in August would've been top 4. Finish 4th and win Europa League I'll be happy.

Which cups? For me the FA cup isn't special but Europe is; I'd love us to win the EL.

Thrashing Inter 3-1, that was unbelievable. More of that any day.

Lets be honest the respect nowadays comes in the form of CL and I still think we deserved more for what we did in the CL that season when you look at the routine exits Arsenal normally take and the money City have thrown at it and got nowhere near close to how we fared in it in one season.

TSH is right though, we become a top four regular and the rest takes care of itself in the sense that we're more competitive and increase our chances of winning more silverware right across the board.

If the FA Cup remotely resembled what it once was, I may well prefer it to CL qualification.

But it is so irredeemably tarnished that even a day out at Wembley feels more like a charabanc trip to Clacton than something to be yearned for.

It's a false choice: the FA Cup as we understand and remember it no longer exists.

I'd rather work on the Chelsea, Man Utd & Man C model, though I doubt that was Arsenal's intention. it was only the stadium that slowed them up, and the emergence of Chelsea and City.

I would love us to win the League and a trophy at the start of the year. I want us to be in the CL year in year out.

how old are you? cause those of us that witnessed the FA Cup wins in the 80's, the UEFA Cup 84 definitely celebrated it?

I actually hate the CL, cause its full of non champions, if I could have the old days back of European Cup, UEFA Cup, and Cup winners Cup, i'd have it back tomorrow

knocking out Fiorentina, might help towards 4th spot still being there for us next season. An English club winning the Europa this season, would help us stay above the Italian clubs for a year or 2 longer

you speak for yourself, once upon a time as a kid that was the next biggest trophy to the World Cup:)

I am speaking for myself, I'm 24 and the FA cup is obviously something I'd like us to win but you only have to look at how devalued it's been in decent years. I want to see the glory European nights under the floodlights of the lane.

How can we not work on the arse model when we're at the same place they were when Wenger took over?
We're not a rich club that buys success. Like them we're doing it properly.

I'm 35. I didn't start with football until 94 though. Only cups we've won in my time are league cups.
I enjoyed the first 2. Then it became apparent they're a great day out for fans but they don't take the club forward.

That's the landscape now. Domestic cups are hardly registered these days.
I can't remember who won last seasons league cu..... oh chelsea. That was genuine. Genuinely forgot for a few seconds we lost in the final.

Inter were THE European Champions then too. Not 10 th in Serie A. AC Milan were still European greats too.
Who the fuck are fiorentina in the grand scheme of it?

As for your 2nd paragraph there, that's it. Win an fa cup every 3 decades and you go nowhere at all. Ask Wigan.
Win the Europa league you might go on to bigger things. But if we hardly win domestic cups how are we to win that?

I'd say top 4 is actually more attainable than winning the europa league BUT gets bigger rewards.
